Abstract

The definition of metaphysics given by Lonergan is analized: the conception, affirmation and implementation of the integral heuristic structure of proportionate being. Here we have a prevalent work program. The main task of metaphysics is to integrate diverse realms of meaning that may seem unconnected. It is a methodology meant to integrate methodologies . The strategy to achieve this consists of understanding that there is an isomorphism between our cognitive activity and being. For this we must thoroughly examinate the traditional thomist notion of being, that is the dynamic orientation of our cognitive structure, common to all humans . Because it is a notion and not a concept, integration will always remain a permanent task. In order to undertake such a mission, the metaphysician should exercise a previous pedagogical self appropriation of his own cognitional structure and its immanent normativity
