Training Ground; avoiding the trap of structural materialist film

Abstract

The text represents the fruition of research into the politics of structural/materialist film. I argued that although Mik’s videos are superficially similar to the films produced by these avant-garde forbears they manage to avoid ‘the trap’ into which structural/materialism fell. This trap related to the way s/m film, ultimately, creates a ‘closed’ subject position for its spectators.
