The role of passion and more generally irrational elements in processing knowledge are discussed. This seems to be a paradox, as science by definition is beyond passion. At the same time science is the expression of a culture. This paradox is examined through the experience and work of crucial figures in physics such as Newton and Einstein. Science is a dialogue between man and nature: part of the search for the transcendental which is common to many cultural activities: art, music, (...) literature. Our time is one of expectation, anxiety, and bifurcation. Far from there being an ?end? of science, our period will see the birth of a new vision, a new science whose cornerstone encloses the arrow of time: a science that makes us and our creativity the expression of a fundamental trend in the universe. This article addresses the problem of emergence through a distinction, often neglected in the literature, between two different aspects of this issue: (1) the theoretical problem of providing modelizations able to explain the expression of emergent properties; (2) the epistemological problem of warranting the scientific value of the emergentist descriptions of nature. This paper considers this double issue with regard to the biological domain, and proposes a double solution (theoretical and epistemological) originally developed in early studies on self-organization. The underlying (...) hypothesis is that this solution offers the current biological emergentism the opportunity of developing a coherent structure: matching consistently the theoretical and the epistemological frames of the research, that is, coupling the emergentist conception of life with an emergentist conception of science. People's vision of world phenomena is still based on the traditional mechanistic concept, which implies that process outcomes can be fully predicted and controlled. The new scientific concept that our world is characterized by complex, self-organizing processes, is so far acknowledged by few insiders. Mass media, advertising companies and information programmes tend to emphasize the success of technology, which significantly contributes to support and spread that mechanistic concept. This situation heavily impacts the management of the environment both in terms of (...) its technical–scientific approach and in terms of its stewardship. Instead of being solved, environmental problems are frequently shifted through time and space, and eventually magnified. Moreover, among the technicians involved in environmental assessments, as well as decision-makers and the general public, the connections regarding technical–scientific issues, ethical values and policy decisions are often not adequately considered. It's time for a public debate on an alternative vision of real-world phenomena and on its actual implications. The hope is that a valid dialogue between existing polarized views on science, technology and the environment may lead to more positive collaboration between science and environmental stewardship, where every single citizen feels committed. The aim of this work is to show how Edgar Morin chose Vico and Hegel as cultural points of reference while elaborating a new method as an alternative to classical scientific knowledge. The French philosopher did this specifically when he tried to re-propose the problem s of history and the event in human sciences. The origins of sociology arose from the explicit extension of the scientific method to the socio-anthropological world; that is, with the intention of studying society as a (...) natural phenomenon to which the laws of physical and biological sciences must be applied. As a tendency against this, at the end of the 1970s Morin began a process of putting sociology into historical context, which led him to a methodological revolution of sociology itself. (shrink)
