From the Shame of Auschwitz to an Ethics of Vulnerability and a Politics of Revolt

Abstract

Hubert and Patricia Dreyfus, commenting on the common theme of Harold Pinter's The Dumbwaiter, The Room, and The Collection, write, "Something savage intrudes into an island of order, suddenly revealing this island's vulnerability demanding a response."1 Written in the late 1950s and early 1960s, these plays may or may not have been intended as commentaries on Hitler's exposé of the West's vulnerability to savagery. Read as such a commentary, however, the allied military victory, the Nuremburg trials, and the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights may be seen as responses that attempt to reestablish the island's order.
