Abstract

This latest work of Father Daniélou is a splendid example of the manner in which erudition can be turned from its ordinary and limited undertaking to the skilful exposition of a more profound and broader theme. The author’s purpose is to show how God has revealed Himself to the pagans, the philosophers, the Jews, the Christians and the mystics. Instead of a specialized and scholarly study of each of these different revelations—a task that would take many volumes—he is concerned primarily with the order and the relationship of these varied ways of knowing God. As he states: “But amid all these ways of knowing God, it is desirable to establish some kind of order. And that is really the aim of this book: to place religions and philosophies, the Old Testament and the New Testament, theology and mysticism, in their proper relationship with the knowledge of God”.
