The article aims to make a contribution to the contemporary debate on emergence by focusing on Conwy Lloyd Morgan’s and George Herbert Mead’s theories of emergence. Both authors, in fact, first elaborated a theory that tried to synthesize the biological, the psycho-physiological and the social dimensions of emergent processes. Since Morgan’s emergentism and Mead’s processual ontology were conditioned by the reflections that the two thinkers had developed over the years and traces back their roots to the early 1890s, the article (...) will be developed as follows. A brief description of Morgan’s conception of organic and mental evolution as elaborated in the 1890s and summarised in his Lowell Lectures will be outlined. Then Mead’s early writings on psychophysics and comparative psychology, pointing out a similarity between Mead and Morgan’s ideas on organic and mental evolution at that time will be introduced. Finally, their theories of emergence from the 1920s, pointing out more interesting similarities and dissimilarities will be examined. (shrink)

The first work to offer a comprehensive pragmatist anthropology focusing on sensibility, habits, and human experience as contingently yet irreversibly enlanguaged.

Метою статті є з'ясування потенціалу ідей англо-американської філософії кінця XIX – початку XX століття для розвитку змістовної комунікації. Увагу зосереджено на філософських ідеях, які утверджують еволюційну роль продуманої людської дії і багатогранне розуміння особистості. Доречною є та філософська теорія, що підкріплює практику і відповідає запитам досвіду. Людина конструює власну ідентичність і прагне бути активним співтворцем суспільного дискурсу, який повсякчас перебуває у стані перебудови. Сенс взаємодії виникає завдяки орієнтації у складній множині індивідуальних перспектив, що функціонують у вимірі значень, які фіксують факти (...) сприйняття й уможливлюють визначення значущих елементів у комунікативному мереживі людських справ, намірів, бажань. Реальність урізноманітнюється, її практичні і смислові тенденції набувають нового чи альтернативного спрямування. Людей вирізняє спроможність породжувати нетривіальні пристосувальні реакції. Відтак формат суспільної взаємодії повинен сприяти передаванню неповторного досвіду особистості близькому оточенню. Принципово пам’ятати, що життєвий сенс більшості висловлювань резонує у конкретиці обставин часу, місця, справжньої та надуманої повноти досвіду. Усвідомлення абстрактності власних поглядів і відчуття дистанції до складного розмаїття явищ є необхідними формами налаштування притомної свідомості. У статті відзначено, що символічним центром будь-якої значущої суспільної практики є особа людини. Виразний рельєф цього багатогранного явища утворюють особливості мови, самоусвідомлення, здатність змінюватися, напрацьовувати переконання, відчувати налаштованість. Спільний світ є проєктом активних особистостей, до його створення вони долучаються крізь власний розвиток і обмін ідеями. Що світ людини багатший і різноманітніший, то щораз більше в ньому виникає конкретних можливостей для подальшого самовдосконалення. Навчитися помічати конструктивну дію інтелекту, його звички і вміння, ритми його активності – мета, яка вимальовується у світлі прочитання класичних і сучасних творів, присвячених філософсько-комунікативній тематиці. George Herbert Mead (1863-1931), American philosopher and social theorist, is often classed with William James, Charles Sanders Peirce, and John Dewey as one of the most significant figures in classical American pragmatism. Dewey referred to Mead as “a seminal mind of the very first order” (Dewey, 1932, xl). Yet by the middle of the twentieth-century, Mead's prestige was greatest outside of professional philosophical circles. He is considered by many to be the father of the school of Symbolic Interactionism in sociology (...) and social psychology, although he did not use this nomenclature. Perhaps Mead's principal influence in philosophical circles occurred as a result of his friendship with John Dewey. There is little question that Mead and Dewey had an enduring influence on each other, with Mead contributing an original theory of the development of the self through communication. This theory has in recent years played a central role in the work of Jürgen Habermas. While Mead is best known for his work on the nature of the self and intersubjectivity, he also developed a theory of action, and a metaphysics that emphasizes emergence and temporality, in which the past and future are viewed through the lens of the present. Although the extent of Mead's reach is considerable, he never published a monograph. His most famous work, Mind, Self, and Society from the Standpoint of a Social Behaviorist, was published after his death and is a compilation of student notes and selections from unpublished manuscripts.
