Abstract

Resumo O presente texto visa abordar duas objeções formuladas por Pettit contra a liberdade definida de forma negativa. A primeira é a possibilidade de haver dominação sem interferência, cujo paradigma residiria no escravo feliz. A segunda é a possibilidade de haver interferência sem dominação, o que ocorreria quando a interferência não fosse arbitrária. O artigo visa demonstrar que a primeira objeção não é relevante para a definição de liberdade negativa. Mas, a segunda constitui-se como um problema para a própria teoria de Pettit, nos termos da crítica de Berlin à liberdade positiva. The first is the possibility of domination without interference, which corresponds to the paradigm of the happy slave. The second problem is the possibility of interference without domination, which occurs when the interference is not arbitrary. The article seeks to demonstrate that the first objection is not relevant to the definition of negative liberty, while the second is, in fact, a problem for Pettit’s theory, in terms of Berlin’s critique of positive liberty.
