The effectiveness of vaccination programmes depends on high levels of public trust in political, scientific and health-related institutions, but public trust in vaccines can waver. This article explores aspects of public trust and mistrust on a web media platform about the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine through the statements of a doctor and an anonymised ‘anti-vaxxer’. Thematic analysis identifies commonalities and divergences in both perspectives. Both trust and mistrust of MMR vaccination are presented as moral, reasoned stances by their proponents; they are (...) connected to the individual’s experiences and situations, but are associated with very different trust attitudes to scientific and political institutions. Moreover, both the trustworthiness of the speakers themselves and the (un)trustworthiness of authorities are emphasised. Trust and mistrust are also thematised in relation to contextual matters such as the role of social media and the historical MMR controversy. Further research towards identifying common ground between trust positions is recommended. (shrink)

Elle exerce sur le thérapeute une emprise directe qui peut modifier son écoute et paralyser le processus thérapeutique, car elle a le pouvoir de s’introduire au cœur de son monde interne.

E-patients are increasingly using the Internet to gain knowledge about medical conditions, thereby problematizing the biomedical assumption that patients are ‘lay’. The present paper addresses this development by investigating the epistemic identities of patients participating on an online health forum. Using poststructuralist discourse analysis to analyze a corpus of cardiology-related threads on an ‘Ask a Doctor’ forum, we compare how patients are discursively constructed by online professionals as ‘knowing’ or ‘not knowing’ with the online knowledge identities patients choose for themselves. Analysis reveals a complex picture, with patients positioning themselves and being constructed as biomedical novices, as well as claiming the subject positions of experts challenging medical expertise. This paper provides a snapshot of an important social identity in transition, illustrates a procedure for comparing language use around imposed and self-appropriated identities, and considers discursive choice in relation to the metapragmatic matter of “sayability”. Popular images of rights almost always emphasize their protective qualities. But who is really protected? In this paper it is argued that contemporary rights talk, because of faulty underlying assumptions, systematically favors prejudice and big property interests. Further, once the mistaken assumptions are surrendered, and it is realized that all rights are affirmative, a less systematically misleading debate can be created within the realm of rights discourse.

Once the Court has spoken, it is the duty of the citizens and their elected officials to abide by its decisions. But the conception of the Supreme Court as the final interpreter of constitutional law took hold only relatively recently. Drawing on the pragmatic ideals characterized by Charles Sanders Peirce, John Dewey, Charles Sabel, and Richard Posner. Brian E. (...) Butler shows how this conception is inherently problematic for a healthy democracy. Butler offers an alternative democratic conception of constitutional law, “democratic experimentalism,” and applies it in a thorough reconstruction of Supreme Court cases across the centuries, such as Brown v. Board of Education, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council, and Lochner v. New York. In contrast to the traditional tools and conceptions of legal analysis that see the law as a formally unique and separate type of practice, democratic experimentalism combines democratic aims and experimental practice. Butler also suggests other directions jurisprudential roles could take: for example, adjudication could be performed by primary stakeholders with better information. Ultimately, Butler argues persuasively for a move away from the current absolute centrality of courts toward a system of justice that emphasizes local rule and democratic choice. (shrink)

L’écoute d’un couple en crise qui demande à être aidé montre fréquemment que la dégradation de leur communication affective et sexuelle a débuté à la naissance d’un enfant, pas nécessairement le premier. Quelques exemples témoignent à quel point de multiples remaniements psychiques s’opèrent au sein du couple, lorsqu’une femme devient mère : retour de l’enfant en soi, réactivation des conflits œdipiens. Et, comme le souligne Winnicott, n’y aurait-il pas en chaque homme et en chaque femme la représentation d’une femme/mère toute-puissante (...) et dominatrice, source d’angoisses multiples? Cette peur de la femme, qu’il faut donc à tout prix dominer, semble évidente lorsqu’on écoute les représentations que les adolescents se font de l’autre sexe. Les auteurs proposent quelques repères théoriques afin de comprendre ces angoisses et aider les couples à les reconnaître pour mieux les gérer. (shrink)

La supervision individuelle ou en groupe permet à tout thérapeute formé selon les concepts théoriques et l’approche clinique de la psychanalyse de forger ses propres outils. Dans un groupe de supervision, chacun apporte les difficultés sur lesquelles il bute dans la mise en place et le déroulement d’une thérapie. Le groupe réfléchit, dans tous les sens du terme, ce qui permet au thérapeute de percevoir ce qui jusque là lui échappait – qu’il s’agisse du fonctionnement symptomatique des patients entre eux (...) ou de ce qui se passe entre eux et lui lorsque s’éclairent les mouvements du transfert. Le groupe est à la fois environnement sécurisant, structure et appareil de liaison, la groupalité étant une dimension du sujet. Tout se passe comme si l’appareil psychique groupal reprenait à son compte le travail d’élaboration psychique du thérapeute, qui, pour le moment, se plaint de ne plus avoir la capacité de penser. Le superviseur est garant du cadre. De lui dépend également la spontanéité et la qualité des échanges ainsi que le climat de confiance indispensable au plaisir de travailler ensemble dans un rapport de parité. (shrink)

Comment départager ce qui est à travailler au sein du groupe thérapeutique et ce qui ne nous regarde pas, nous thérapeutes? Autant de frontières entre l’autre et soi, entre les motivations conscientes et les désirs inconscients, qui sont à la fois signifiantes et difficilement repérables. Le travail du thérapeute sur son contre-transfert lui permet de faire la différence entre ce qui ne le regarde pas et ce dont il préfère ne rien savoir.

À partir d’une situation de couple dans lequel la communication semble bloquée par un trop plein de souffrance, due en partie à des traumatismes dans les liens de filiation de part et d’autre, l’auteure, grâce à un groupe de recherche, expérimente la nécessité d’un nouvel espace pour réguler un transfert massif. Le groupe de recherche prend en quelque sorte le relais de l’appareil psychique du thérapeute et met en scène les émotions et les représentations qui sont à l’œuvre au sein (...) du groupe thérapeutique. Il devient un lieu de dépôt et de mentalisation des émotions qui circulent dans le transfert, et se fait le porte-voix des souffrances traumatiques enfermées dans les incorporats, ces ratés de l’introjection. A farming systems approach to development has meant many things over the past 15 years, depending on its institutional and ecological setting, its target populations, and the goals motivating its implementation. Despite the diversity of approaches, and the sometimes rancorous discussion over which was best and why, the approach is now recognized in many places as the only one that can identify and respond to the needs of limited resource farm families, especially those in marginal ecosystems. Involving an iterative process (...) of diagnosis, design, testing and extension, the farming system approach to date has done more to change research objectives at national and international institutions than to change actual farmer practices. By legitimizing what limited resource farmers do and why they do it, a farming systems approach lends itself to policy analysis as well. Recent research in farming systems suggests greater attention should be payed to exogenous variables, including policy and infrastructure, as well as to development of technology that really responds to the felt needs of limited resource farmers in improving their level of living. Jaspers uses the third Critique as a foundation for his own approach to metaphysics in the third volume of Philosophy. Kant's "Reflective judgement" is claimed to be the origin of Jaspers' "ciphers", and the term itself is examined in its Kantian context. The Existential antinomies in volume III are shown to be developments of Kant's descriptions of beauty as that which comforts and unifies, and sublimity as that which challenges and disrupts harmony. Any experience wherein the object is regarded as (...) lacking determinate conceptualization can serve a "regulative" function for Existenz, but aren't regarded as "constitutive" for knowledge. The importance of this account of ciphers and reflective judgement is applied to the question of whether a "philosophical anthropology" is possible, and it is argued that only an indirect use of reason is possible. ;The relationship between Kant's second Critique and Jaspers' "elucidation of Existenz" in volume II of Philosophy is much less close, but it is argued that even here Jaspers is engaged in a kind of Kantian interpretation. Jaspers accepts the claim that reason can be practical if it can produce some change in reality, or in "Existenz". Using the "temporalized schemata" of the first Critique as a way of organizing his "concepts of Existenz", Jaspers examines how man's noumenal Existenz can be altered by reason. The relationship between "Existenz" and Kant's "noumenal self", is explored to clarify what "Existenz" means. In using the schemata within his criticism of Kant's formalism, Jaspers is thus still working within a Kantian context, but one which places more emphasis upon temporality. The transformations of the Categorical Imperative into unconditional action is examined, as is the criticism Jaspers offers of Kant's claim that "perfection" is inadequate as a foundation for ethics because it is too "empirical". ;Jaspers' discussions of the "ideals" of reason, "world-orientation", "transcending logic", the "systematics" of philosophy, and philosophical methodology are all presented as continuations of specific sections of the first "Critique. ;The radical interpretation that Jaspers makes claims that the Deduction is neither a patchwork nor a consistent unified argument, but is comprised of four separable but connected 'threads' woven together. Although critics have attacked Kant's attempt to speak meaningfully about the possibility of a transphenomenal realm, Jaspers defends Kant even though "objectively" his arguments fail, because the philosophical discussion of the nature of "objects" must preceed a purely formal logic that systematizes such objects. ;Failure to see Kant's underlying method as one that radically separates the methods of understanding and reason yields complementary misunderstandings or "antinomies." Jaspers' discussion of positivism and idealism thus grows out of these antinomies. Jaspers interprets the "island" metaphor Kant uses to mean that one fails to see the need for relating experience to the "ocean" of non-knowledge surrounding it, and the other tries to extend concepts valid in experience as valid in the same way beyond the shores of experience only to suffer necessary "shipwreck." ;Although many writers have pointed to Kantian influences in the works of Karl Jaspers, there has been little systematic examination of the way that Jaspers is a self-proclaimed Kantian. This study considers the Kantian elements in Jasper's three-volume Philosophy, and argues that Jaspers systematically transforms Kant's three Critiques into his own work by a radical interpretation of Kant's method, especially in the transcendental deduction. Excluded from this study is all that is original in Jaspers, or owes its origin to the existential tradition, in the belief that placing certain elements in a Kantian context makes them much less problematic and helps in understanding Jaspers' work. What should be the primary aims of education? How might these aims be realized? These are foundational questions which Plato raised long ago in his Republic. The first of these questions is a normative, and profoundly philosophical, one which provides guidance to the whole endeavor of education. The second of these questions is a pedagogical one which informs educators as to how their work can be best conducted. ;In this work I endeavor to answer these interlocking educational questions. I follow (...) most closely in the footsteps of John Dewey. I believe that Dewey had it right when, decades ago, he argued that education ought to be concerned with the cultivation of good judgment. ;But here a difficulty arises. For "good judgment" is a complex philosophical concept which spills over into considerations of thinking, knowing, deciding, and acting. Despite the efforts of philosophers such as Aristotle, Kant, and Dewey, there is a lack of agreement about the precise meaning of good judgment. ;Before moving into matters of education, then, I first endeavor to vanquish this lack of conceptual clarity. What is good judgment? What are its elements? Can it, for that matter, even be cultivated? ;Having gotten clear on what good judgment is, I turn to matters of education. First, I argue that a vital task of education is the cultivation of good judgment. I then turn to the practical matter of how one might go about cultivating good judgment. The community of inquiry approach employed by The Philosophy for Children Program, I contend, is an effective pedagogical means through which to cultivate good judgment. (shrink)
