This is Chapter Three of Edited Book titled "Locality, History, Memory: The Making of the Citizen in South Asia (Pasts and Futures: Readings in a Contemporary World)". This chapter explains that humans have definite essence. Animisim and Mythology are patterned due to particular essence. Process of evolution and growth of knowledge has been explained within the parameters of the given essence.

Scientific inquiry takes onward course from the point where previous scientists had reached. But philosophical analysis initiates from scratch. Philosophy questions everything and chooses starting point for itself after having ruled out all the unsubstantiated and doubtful elements of the topic under study. Secondly, known realities must make sense. If a theory is officially 'counterintuitive', then either it is mere fiction or at the most; a distorted form of truth. This book's analysis is based on the philosophical principle that knowledge (...) is empirical and does not arise magically in absence of observational grounds. With philosophical approach, it was doubtful to accept that Georges Lemaître already knew Hubble's law in year 1927 that was yet to be found by Edwin Hubble in year 1929. Therefore this book started with denial of the claim that Lemaître already knew this law. But analysis of section I.III forced author to look the matter from original source and it came to surface that Lemaître knew this law in year 1927. But contrary to mainstream claim, Lemaître had not derived that law from general relativity (GR) equations rather had deduced from a method given by Hubble himself. Whereas whole case of the Big Bang Theory rests on misleading claim that Lemaître had derived this law solely from GR equations. The basis of this claim happened to be a manipulated translation (1931) of Lemaître's original 1927 article. People regard Big Bang Theory as truth because authoritative sources deceived them by presenting a manipulated translation in year 1931. This book is a philosophical analysis of original papers of Alexander Friedmann (1922), Georges Lemaître (1927), Edwin Hubble (1929) and Albert Einstein (1917) thus covers actual roots and origins of the Big Bang Model. In this book, only the core elements of the Big Bang Model i.e. 'Expansion of Universe' and 'CMBR' are covered. It has been sufficiently shown that 'expansion' is an illusion whereas CMBR is a proof that we live in a non-expanding infinite universe. If these two core elements of the standard Big Bang Model are precisely refuted then there is nothing crucial left with the standard model. For readers of this book at least, Big Bang Theory shall become a story of past mistakes. Author is not an authoritative source on science topics therefore readers must download all the above mentioned original papers and check all the points outlined in this book from relevant original papers. Unlike reading from an authoritative source that makes readers relaxed and careless but enables authorities to deceive them in worst way possible, this book requires readers to remain alert on all the points discussed in the book and verify everything from original sources whose links are given at the end of this description and also provided in footnotes section of the book. This book is not a judgment of the topic rather it is like a case presented by an advocate while readers are the judges. Readers are required to apply their own critical judgment to conclude the matter by themselves. Scientists of today do not like this idea but philosophy is capable to deal with theoretical conundrums like dark matter. First chapter which is like a combat between mathematical counterintuitive physics and human commonsense, explains that human commonsense equipped with proper philosophical approach is capable to deal with the problem of dark matter. -/- After making a case for philosophical method, this book (...) then challenges the fundamental convictions of the established Cosmology and explains that even many visible galaxies are located at (light travel) distance of many hundred billion light years. There is no dark matter in any of the so-called 'proofs' of the existence of dark matter and MOND is also an engineered and artificial solution. -/- This book has solved Galactic Rotation problem using Newton's theory and have shown that available theory was capable to explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies without necessitating the existence of dark matter. Thus theory itself is not challenged, blamed or modified. However understanding of scientists of their so-called counterintuitive theories is blamed. For example, to deal with the Galactic Rotation problem, the relevant part of Newton's Principia Mathematica was Proposition LXXIII, Theorem XXXIII. Whereas to deal with this problem, scientists had wrongfully applied Proposition LXXI, Theorem XXXI. Obviously, inaccurate application of available theory resulted in a fake problem and dark matter only served as a ghost solution to that bogus problem. -/- Not only the Galactic Rotation, other so-called indicators of Dark Matter like Cluster Dynamics, Gravitational Lensing, Bullet Cluster, Dark Matter Ring, Fluctuations in CMB Temperature and Structures Formation etc. also have been explained without requiring the need for Dark Matter. -/- Overall this book has presented a strong case of the failure of counterintuitive regime of established Cosmology and Physics. Organizational scholars tend to view justice and compassion as incompatible. While both have important functions in organizational life, compassion's affective elements appear difficult to synthesize with the reasoning and impartiality that underlie the concept of justice. We draw on theoretical arguments from the sensemaking perspective to argue that we can integrate organizational compassion and organizational justice conceptually because both are inherently dynamic processes that rely on emotional and cognitive components, and both are shaped by the social context of the organization. Based on this integrative conceptualization, we propose a construct we call ‘compassionate organizational justice’, in which compassion becomes an integral element of an organization's justice requirements and members’ fairness perceptions, and that those justice perceptions in turn inform future instances of organizational compassion. This article aims to respond to the long-lived perceived incompatibility between care and compassion and justice in organizational literature. It is argued that principles of care and compassion and principles of justice are compatible with each other and can be integrated in organizations in such a way that both will supplement each other. Previous researches tend to view concepts of care and compassion and justice either as competing or inheriting some fundamental trade-offs. This article argues that the highlighted incompatibility between (...) care and compassion and justice is mainly due to the limited understanding about the nature of organizational justice. Care and compassion carry elements of subjectivity and are dynamic in nature, whereas literature on organizational justice has described justice as an objective, static and linear construct due to which an incompatibility between these two very important phenomena is prevailing. Focusing on the ‘#HandsOffMyHijab’ movement, this chapter discusses representations of Muslim women, the hijab, and the niqab, and how these items of clothing are received in Western society. #HandsOffMyHijab is a recent social political movement supporting Muslim women who wear the hijab to respond to legal bans imposed in several countries, including France. This chapter will highlight the active role British Muslim women writers are taking to counter the misrepresentation and marginalisation of Muslim women’s voices in the West. The chapter (...) examines the ways in which negative perceptions of Muslim women and the hijab are being challenged in contemporary British literature. This chapter also includes a close textual analysis of Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan’s Postcolonial Banter (2019). This collection of poetry explores identity, racism, and Islamophobia. Her poems discuss the process of decolonisation and inequality in academic and economic spaces. Manzoor-Khan expands on the idea of ‘transforming the conditions of structural violence, exclusion and inequality’ (Postcolonial Banter 2019, p. 82). Engagement with writers includes reference to an interview conducted via Instagram live. The inclusion of this interview alongside a textual analysis of Manzoor-Khan’s work enables a dual focus on her use of literary form to engage with wider social and political discussions. (shrink)

Tremendous development in recent medical science and the consequent discoveries resulting in successful prevention and also cure of different diseases are shared by clinical research involving the human volunteers. Preceding the trials in the human subjects, and to ensure safety, the proposed drug and other interventions are either tested in animals (vivo) or in laboratory (vitro) to evaluate initial safe starting dose for the human beings and to key out the benchmarks for the clinical monitoring for the potential unfavorable effects. (...) These pre human trials might not necessarily protect against the untoward effects in the human beings as happened in the case of thalidomide tragedy, which caused disability and killed thousands of babies born to the mothers, those who took this medicine. Use of healthy human volunteers in the preliminary experiments or phase I clinical trials either reduces or excludes risks of subsequent undesirable effects in the future trails (1). Phase-1 trials are conducted in order to test the safety, reactions and immunogenicity of vaccines in volunteers. Novel treatments for the cancer are first tested in phase 1 trials enrolling the patients with advanced disease, who have exhausted the standard treatment options. Phase-1 oncology trials are the pivot point in the translation of new cancer therapies from bench to bedside. Nevertheless, these trials remain ethically controversial. The controversy stems from the fact that, classically, phase-1 oncology clinical trials involve first-in-human testing of experimental treatment candidates in patients with a terminal diagnosis, who typically have exhausted standard treatment options. Commentators on the ethics of phase-1 clinical trials make diametrically opposed claims about the prospect of direct medical benefit from participation in these trials-benefits that can be attributed to receiving the experimental treatment intervention. One camp of benefit skeptics, inhabited mainly by bioethicists, characterizes this form of research as lacking any reasonable prospect of direct medical benefit. They see an ethical cloud hovering over phase-1 trials, because the vast majority of patients volunteer for phase-1 trials out of a motivation to receive medical benefit. In the view of these skeptics, such patients therefore harbor a ‘therapeutic misconception’ about research participation. This misconception calls into question the validity of informed consent and thereby undercuts the ethical basis of these trials (2). Asia is the most diverse continent in the world in terms of culture, religion, population size, finance, education, health care, academic research, general population skills, and governmental drug regulations. Each Asian country has its own unique qualities when it comes to attracting industry sponsored clinical trials. Factors that influence selecting location of a study site for a sponsored trial are mainly population size, infrastructure, education levels, and quality of health care, cost and drug regulatory platform. Conducting research in traditional countries (...) like Pakistan adds another dimension to the problems in assuring that research conducted in an ethical manner. The roots of the problem of vis-viva or the living forces are potentially from the ancient Greek philosophy, more specifically Aristotle. He wanted to know, What is motion?, Why things move?, Is movement 'real' or 'not-real'?. Answer to this question never came until 16 th century. Philosophers and scientists such as Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, Leibniz, D'Alambert found an approach to this problem that seems rigorously to our observations. Even though, we do not know if that was the intention of Aristotle?

End of Life decision-making, in pediatrics is critical, imparting a great burden of responsibility on those involved in the process. The decision-making is multidimensional. Pediatricians encounter many ethical concerns during this process. Qualitative, phenomenological research based on indepth interviews of 12 pediatricians from three tertiary care hospitals of Karachi, Pakistan. Data was analyzed using Nvivo 9 software. Six themes were identified, a) Major factors are clinical information and available resource; b)Itis clinically and psychologically challenging; c) Participation of parents is influenced (...) by emotional, socio-economic and religious factors; d) Communication is the most crucial aspect of conflict resolution; e) Institutional policies and expert opinions guide pediatricians f) Clinical Ethics consultation is underutilized in Pakistan. The parents and pediatricians are responsible for decisions aligned to the best interest of children. The role of Pediatricians is critical as they look for the best possible ways to provide care through limited healthcare resources. Parents generally base their views on social and spiritual values. We recommend that healthcare organizations in Pakistan adopt clinical ethics consultation as a source of facilitation and support for these difficult decisions. (shrink)

Interaction of pharmaceutical companies with healthcare services has been a reason for concern. In medicine, awareness of the ethical implications of these interactions have been emphasized upon, while this issue has not been highlighted in dentistry. This study undertook a cross-sectional rapid assessment procedure to gather views of dentists in various institutions towards unethical practices in health care and pharmaceutical industry. The purpose of this study was to assess the need for the formulation and implementation of guidelines for the interaction (...) of dentists with the pharmaceutical and device industry in the best interest of patients. A group of 209 dentists of Lahore including faculty members, demonstrators, private practitioners and fresh graduates responded to a questionnaire to assess their attitudes and practices towards pharmaceutical companies' marketing gifts. The study was conducted during 2011 and provided interesting data that showed the pharmaceutical industry is approaching private practitioners more frequently than academicians and fresh graduates. Private practioners accepted the gifts but mostly recognized them as unethical. Both groups considered sponsoring of on-campus lectures as acceptable. Respondents are not fully aware of the ethical demands which are imperative for all health care industries, and there is a dire need of strict guidelines and code of ethics for the dentist's interaction with the pharmaceutical and device industry so that patient interest is protected. This study discusses the impact of different economic indicators on economic stability, including honest leadership, improved infrastructure, revenue generation, and CPEC taking into account the double mediating role of environmental sustainability and sustainable development, while considering the latest COVID-19 situation. This study adopted primary data collection methods and obtained data from the employees of CPEC by using questionnaires and smart-PLS for analysis purposes. The results revealed that honest leadership, improved infrastructure, revenue generation, and CPEC have a positive nexus with economic (...) stability. Despite the severe impact of COVID-19 on the country’s economy, the economic corridor plays a vital role in stabilizing the state’s economy and supports all those related to this phenomenal project either directly or indirectly. The concept of a hypersoft membership function is introduced in the extension of a soft set known as a hypersoft set, permitting it to handle complicated and uncertain information in a more powerful and flexible manner. Many academics have already become fascinated with this new area of study, leading to the development of a number of hybrid structures. This chapter develops some new hybrid hypersoft set structures by taking into account multiple fuzzy set-like settings and possibility degree-based settings collectively. Poor eating habits among students are a contemporary problem faced by a huge chunk of population like students at schools, colleges, and universities. Students have unhealthy habits of eating junk food and skipping meals at regular intervals which in turn put negative effects on their health. Several studies are being conducted to assess the eating pattern among students at various stages. This study was conducted at a medical university to determine the attitude of medical students towards their eating habits. A (...) total of 246 students responded to the questionnaire to Uind out their attitudes. This study was conducted in September 2018 and it was shown that the majority of students were having healthy eating habits and were taking meals regularly and also using fruits and vegetables, though some of the students were eating junk food also. Health research plays an important role in addressing the inequities in human development and health, but in order to achieve these objectives, research should be based on ethical principles and sound scientific knowledge. Although it is accepted fact that bioethics play a pivotal role in health related research in the developing countries, much of recent debate has focused on the controversies surrounding internationally sponsored research and it has taken place largely without the adequate participation of developing countries. This article shares my experience of internal evaluation of bioethics at postgraduate level at a nursing institute of Pakistan. Bioethics is included in the MS Nursing student’s curriculum as a subject “Ethics in Health Care”. In this article I will focus on internal evaluation and also put some light on curriculum design of MS Nursing students.

Objective: To determine the perception of undergraduate medical students regarding different ethical issues encountered in medical field. Materials and Methods: The 3rd year MBBS students at LUMHS were given the pre-designed and self-report questionnaire and were requested to take part in the study. Total 100 Students of 3rd Year MBBS were given the questionnaire in June 2014. Out of 100 Students 91 completed the questionnaire. Results: The results of this study shows that majority of undergraduate students have understood bioethics. The (...) students were taught bioethics in their initial two years of MBBS and now majority of them are practicing medical ethics in their ward postings and clinical rotations. Conclusion: The responses of the questionnaire indicate that students do have awareness about bioethics and majority of them are practicing it and have knowledge about it. The curriculum can be further modified to fill the gaps in the knowledge among students to improve future practices. (shrink)

Objective: To evaluate the perception of nursing ethics among undergraduate nursing students and to explore their understanding of nursing curriculum and ethical issues in the field of nursing. Materials and Methods: The final year nursing students at nursing school LUMHS were given the pre designed self report questionnaire and they were requested to take part in this study. Results: Forty present students took part in this study and 8 students were absent. The students accepted that learning nursing ethics is very (...) essential to understand their responsibilities which they have towards their patients and to understand ethical decision making. The students were satisfied and found their curriculum comprehensive and good for learning. Conclusion: The students’ evaluation of nursing ethics shows that the undergraduate nursing students do have knowledge about ethical issues in the field of nursing and they are able to identify and resolve those issues. They have also good knowledge about their nursing curriculum and they found their curriculum ideal and comprehensive. (shrink)

Bioethics is being taught nowadays all over the world to improve student’s understanding of ethical issues in contemporary medicine. Undergraduate as well as postgraduate students are being trained in biomedical ethics to recognize and identify ethical dilemmas and then resolve them and also to face the situations where there is need of ethical analysis. This study was conducted at a medical university to assess the attitude and perception of undergraduate medical students regarding their bioethics curriculum, course contents and understanding of (...) ethical issues. A total of 280 students responded to the questionnaire to assess their attitudes. This study was conducted in April 2015 and it reflected that students are aware about ethical issues in their field and they have reasonable understanding of their curriculum and course contents. Objective: To determine the attitudes and perceptions of undergraduate physiotherapy students on different components of their bioethics course. Materials and Methods: The final year physiotherapy students at IPRS LUMHS were given the pre-designed self-report questionnaire at the end of their bioethics lecture and were requested to participate in the study. Results: All 39 present students participated in the study and 3 were absent. All the students were of the view that learning bioethics is necessary for good professional practice. The students (...) were satisfied with the course and they are now able to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas in their field of physiotherapy. Conclusion: The students’ evaluation of their bioethics course is very important as this will help us in further improving our bioethics curriculum. The issue looks into different issues (...) and provides us with indepth information, queries, fears and reservations.In the article on Knowledge, attitude and practice of medical ethics among medical intern students in a Medical College in Kathmandu, Ramesh P Aacharyaand Yagya L Shakya, report on a Knowledge Attitude and Practice survey of 46 medical undergraduate interns of Maharajgunj Medical Campus. The result of the survey is quite interesting. ‘Doctors know the best irrespective of patients’ opinion was agreed upon by 35 %, ‘Confidentiality cannot be kept in modern era and should be abandoned’ was strongly disagreed by 34.8% and disagreed by 60.9%. The Authors hope that the findings will assist the faculties to strengthen the teaching of medical ethics and guiding the interns for ethical professional conduct. In the article titled Organizational Justice and Employee’s Service Behavior in the Healthcare Organizations in Bangladesh is an agenda for Research, Md. Nuruzzaman and Md. Humayun Kabir Talukder present a conceptual framework and a set of hypotheses regarding the relationships among distributive justice, procedural justice, interactional justice, employee’s citizenship behaviour, role prescribed behaviour and counterproductive behavior in the healthcare organizations in Bangladesh. The authors state that the purpose is to assist the policy makers and service providers in identifying desirable and undesirable HRM practices in order to maintain optimum level of employee commitment for ensuring quality and efficient service delivery to the communities. Though the article is theoretical it may be useful for the policy makers and service providers. If an operational research could be carried out to test the hypothesis the practical utility of the concept could be tested in Bangladesh.Zoheb Rafique in the article Ethical Justification of Conducting Research Trials in Lower and Middle Income Countries Including Pakistan: The Responsibilities of Research Enterprises explores the ethical aspects of research sponsored by commercial agencies. He looks into the factors that influence selection of a study site for a sponsored trial particularly in traditional countries like Pakistan where cultural values add to the problem in assuring that research is conducted in an ethical manner. In this paper, the Author discusses the responsibilities of researchers and funders in low and middle income countries like Pakistan and the ethical justifications of doing research trials in developing countries. He concludes that research participants should be fully informed about the research trial and their participation and it is their right to know all risks and benefits so that they have the option of rejecting participation.The article on Ethical aspects of Dhaka University Tele-medicine System by Ahmed Raihan Abir provides and analysis of the tele- medicine system in Dhaka University. The Author is a member of an extended group at Dhaka University (DU) which has been developing telemedicine equipment and data acquisition software to promote telemedicine practice in Bangladesh. Recently the Telemedicine group of DU and a local NGO named SAMAMA with support from Service innovation fund (SIF) of the Prime Minister Office (PMO) of Bangladesh took the initiative to establish eight rural telemedicine centers and one expert center for the field trial of telemedicine in Bangladesh. The aim of this paper is to examine the ethical challenges of such health care system and the effort to overcome these problems before starting the field trial. The author looks into the details of Data confidentiality and security, Responsibilities of Doctor and Rural Technician, Quality of service and Implications of telemedicine in Bangladesh. He concludes that DU telemedicine project will essentially bring the services of qualified medical experts to the doorsteps of the common people throughout the country, even in the remote rural areas. Although a telemedicine cannot match a face to face consultation, DU tele-medicine system is much better than no consultation at all.Sifat Rahman in the article on Ethical Issues of Fair Subject Selection in Research provides an overview of the criterion for maintaining ethical standards for conducting research. The Author reviews the three fundamental conditions to be met for adhering to strict ethical standards which are: Respect for Persons by protecting the autonomy of people, treating them with courtesy and respect and obtaining informed consent.; Beneficence which incorporates the philosophy of "Do no harm" while maximizing benefits for the research project and minimizing risks to the research subjects; and Justice by ensuring that reasonable, non-exploitative, and well-considered procedures are administered fairly. Finally the Author concludes that Researchers must be truthful and conduct no deception.Dear Readers, as you can see from the above ethics and maintaining the values in research and services are of utmost importance in the improvement of the quality of life.
