teleology and tutelage in Plato's Republic Plato's Republic, first synoptic work ‐ political philosophy, that we know of in any language dialogue, the Republic ‐ a virtual monologue, Socrates laying out characteristics, of a just man and a just city, education and training for each justice, what Socrates, calls a “craft” (techne) ‐ benefits to friends and doing harm to enemies Glaucon suggesting general attribute of human beings ‐ wanting to outdo others, by getting and having as much as one possibly can Glaucon, synthesizing elements ‐ from Polemarchus' and Thrasymachus' views theory of justice, Socrates presenting ‐ bulk of Republic, departing dramatically from Glaucon's view on all points Plato's implicit point, preliminary conceptions ‐ wrongheaded, changing the subject, way to ascertain true ideas about justice coercion, necessary tool in the kit of rulers ‐ of a just city– alongside indoctrination Plato's tripartite theory of soul ‐ central to his purposes, than his t
