  1. The Eurocentrism of neo-Roman republicanism and the neglect of republican empire.Kevin Blachford - 2021 - Thesis Eleven 166 (1):136-150.
Republicanism is an approach within political theory that seeks to secure the values of political liberty and non-domination. Yet, in historical practice, early modern republics developed empires and secured their liberty through policies that dominated others. This contradiction presents challenges for how neo-Roman theorists understand ideals of liberty and political freedom. This article argues that the historical practices of slavery and empire developed concurrently with the normative ideals of republican liberty. Republican liberty does not arise in the absence of power (...)

  • Challenging the State: Teaching Alternative Historiographies in Early Modern Politics.Jacob Affolter - 2015 - Metaphilosophy 46 (3):398-413.
This article argues that we can improve the way we teach early modern political philosophy if we introduce students to alternative views about the development of the state. First, it summarizes the work of contemporary philosophers and historians who are critical of the modern state. Second, it points out ways in which early social contract theorists take the state for granted. Third, it argues that alternative views about the development of the state can help students take a more critical perspective (...)

  • Freedom without law.Harrison P. Frye - 2018 - Politics, Philosophy and Economics 17 (3):298-316.
Untangling the relationship of law and liberty is among the core problems of political theory. One prominent position is that there is no freedom without law. This article challenges the argument that, because law is constitutive of freedom, there is no freedom without law. I suggest that, once properly understood, the argument that law is constitutive of freedom does not uniquely apply to law. It also applies to social norms. What law does for freedom, social norms can do too. Thus, (...)

  • Political Theories of Narcissism: Towards the Self-Reflection of Knowledge and Politics from the Psychoanalytic Perspectives of Erich Fromm and Shōzō Fujita.Takamichi Sakurai - unknown
My research re-introduces two social and political thinkers, Erich Fromm and Shōzō Fujita. It would seem that there is no need to go into any detail about the former. He has been generally regarded as a German-American social psychologist who integrated Marx’s historical materialism with Freud’s instinct theory by way of Weberian sociology. The latter is most commonly regarded as a Japanese political thinker who focused on the study of the Tennō system as a Japanese system of government. As we (...)
