Abstract

The 1599 Ratio Studiorum laid out a detailed set of rules for all Jesuit schools specifying the duties of administrators and teachers, subjects to be taught and in what order, and the precise pedagogical order to be followed. Both the Ratio and t he Jesuit Constitutions allowed modifications when necessary, however. An examination of Jesuit schools established 1792-1803. two in St. Petersburg and one in Georgetown, shows successful adaptation of the Ratio to environments radically different from that of sixteenth-century Catholic Europe. These new schools modified or ignored many of the Ratio's specific provisions on curriculum but remained faithful to its prescribed methodology. More importantly, teachers and administrators in the new schools in the United States and Russia embodied the essential spirit of the Ratio in their daily work.
