Discursive construction and negotiation of laity on an online health forum.Antoinette Fage-Butler & Patrizia Anesa - 2016 - Pragmatics and Society 7 (2):196-216.
E-patients are increasingly using the Internet to gain knowledge about medical conditions, thereby problematizing the biomedical assumption that patients are ‘lay’. The present paper addresses this development by investigating the epistemic identities of patients participating on an online health forum. Using poststructuralist discourse analysis to analyze a corpus of cardiology-related threads on an ‘Ask a Doctor’ forum, we compare how patients are discursively constructed by online professionals as ‘knowing’ or ‘not knowing’ with the online knowledge identities patients choose for themselves.

    All Rights Are Affirmative.Brian E. Butler - 2001 - Radical Philosophy Review 4 (1-2):95-101.
Popular images of rights almost always emphasize their protective qualities. But who is really protected? In this paper it is argued that contemporary rights talk, because of faulty underlying assumptions, systematically favors prejudice and big property interests. Further, once the mistaken assumptions are surrendered, and it is realized that all rights are affirmative, a less systematically misleading debate can be created within the realm of rights discourse.

The Power of Visual Approaches in Qualitative Inquiry: The Use of Collage Making and Concept Mapping in Experiential Research.Lynn Butler-Kisber & Tiiu Poldma - 2010 - Journal of Research Practice 6 (2):Article M18.
The burgeoning interest in arts-informed research and the increasing variety of visual possibilities as a result of new technologies have paved the way for researchers to explore and use visual forms of inquiry. This article investigates how collage making and concept mapping are useful visual approaches that can inform qualitative research. They are experiential ways of doing/knowing that help to get at tacit aspects of both understanding and process and to make these more explicit to the researcher and more accessible (...)

What should be the primary aims of education? How might these aims be realized? These are foundational questions which Plato raised long ago in his Republic. The first of these questions is a normative, and profoundly philosophical, one which provides guidance to the whole endeavor of education. The second of these questions is a pedagogical one which informs educators as to how their work can be best conducted. ;In this work I endeavor to answer these interlocking educational questions. I follow (...)

Jaspers uses the third Critique as a foundation for his own approach to metaphysics in the third volume of Philosophy. Kant's "Reflective judgement" is claimed to be the origin of Jaspers' "ciphers", and the term itself is examined in its Kantian context. The Existential antinomies in volume III are shown to be developments of Kant's descriptions of beauty as that which comforts and unifies, and sublimity as that which challenges and disrupts harmony. Any experience wherein the object is regarded as (...)
