  1. Why do mathematicians re-prove theorems?John W. Dawson Jr - 2006 - Philosophia Mathematica 14 (3):269-286.
From ancient times to the present, the discovery and presentation of new proofs of previously established theorems has been a salient feature of mathematical practice. Why? What purposes are served by such endeavors? And how do mathematicians judge whether two proofs of the same theorem are essentially different? Consideration of such questions illuminates the roles that proofs play in the validation and communication of mathematical knowledge and raises issues that have yet to be resolved by mathematical logicians. The Appendix, in (...)

  2. Engagement and suffering in responsible caregiving: On overcoming maleficience in health care.Dawson S. Schultz & Franco A. Carnevale - 1996 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 17 (3).
The thesis of this article is that engagement and suffering are essential aspects of responsible caregiving. The sense of medical responsibility engendered by engaged caregiving is referred to herein as clinical phronesis, i.e. practical wisdom in health care, or, simply, practical health care wisdom. The idea of clinical phronesis calls to mind a relational or communicative sense of medical responsibility which can best be understood as a kind of virtue ethics, yet one that is informed by the exigencies of moral (...)

Anthropomorphism, not depiction, explains interaction with social robots.Dawson Petersen & Amit Almor - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e41.
We question the role given to depiction in Clark and Fischer's account of interaction with social robots. Specifically, we argue that positing a unique cognitive process for handling depiction is evolutionarily implausible and empirically redundant because the phenomena it is intended to explain are not limited to depictive contexts and are better explained by reference to more general cognitive processes.

The biological dimensions of transcendent states: A randomized controlled trial.Dawson Church, Amy Yang, Jeffrey Fannin & Katharina Blickheuser - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This study evaluated the biological dimension of meditation and self-transcendent states. A convenience sample of 513 participants was drawn from attendees at a 4-day guided meditation workshop. Half were randomly assigned to an active placebo control intervention. All were assessed on a variety of measures, both psychological [anxiety, pain, posttraumatic stress disorder, positive emotions, and transcendent states], and physiological. Additional biological assessments including salivary immunoglobulin-A, cortisol, and Quantitative Electroencephalography were obtained from subset of the Experimental group. No significant difference in (...)

Often regarded simply as a nuisance in clinical drug trials in which the aim is to separate drug response from placebo response in a statistically significant manner, the placebo response has important implications. These implications relate to the nature of illness, the study of non-specific factors in the treatment setting that are related to clinical improvement, methods of enhancing these non-specific sources of benefit, and the neurobiology that is associated with the placebo response. Specific sources of clinical improvement in medical (...)

This dissertation critically examines two possible approaches to interpreting the meaning of freedom--"reason" and "dread." My thesis is, first, that, although freedom has most often been understood conceptually in the reflection of Western ethics in terms of reason or rationality, this framework nonetheless partially obfuscates "what is going on" primordially in the experience of freedom, that is, in the eventfulness of freedom's own occurrence in the human world of life and death; secondly, that this occurrence can be understood more fully (...)

  24. Locke On Language In Society.Dawson Hannah - 2005 - History of Political Thought 26 (3):398-425.
This article investigates the impact of Locke's philosophy of language on his political thought. It argues that certain aspects of his linguistic theory have a devastating impact on his vision of civil society. There are three ways in which the Lockean commonwealth is threatened. First, Locke's belief in the sovereign and constitutive power of words impedes the toleration that he holds so dear. Second, his fear that men break the compacts that make language work throws into doubt the possibility of (...)

Defining Standard of Care in the Developing World: The Intersection of International Research Ethics and Health Systems Analysis.Liza Dawson Adnan A. Hyder - 2005 - Developing World Bioethics 5 (2):142-152.
ABSTRACT In recent years there has been intense debate regarding the level of medical care provided to ‘standard care’ control groups in clinical trials in developing countries, particularly when the research sponsors come from wealthier countries. The debate revolves around the issue of how to define a standard of medical care in a country in which many people are not receiving the best methods of medical care available in other settings. In this paper, we argue that additional dimensions of the (...)

Few individuals have shaped their country's civilization more profoundly than the Master Kong, better-known as Confucius (551-479 BC). His sayings and those of his disciples form the foundation of a distinct social, ethical, and intellectual system. They have retained their freshness and vigor throughout the two and a half millennia of their currency, and are still admired even in today's China. This lively new translation offers clear explanatory notes by one of the foremost scholars of classical Chinese, providing an ideal (...)

Brain processes and holistic isomorphism: Moving toward a humanistic neuroscience.Bruce L. Brown, Dawson W. Hedges & Edwin E. Gantt - 2008 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 28 (2):356-374.
A common quest among theoretical psychologists is the transformation of psychology to accommodate human agency and meaning. Several strong experimental methods are used in cognitive neuroscience but are based almost entirely upon a mechanistic ontology. A step toward rapprochement is proposed using precise and powerful experimental methods that are holistic, individualized, and compatible with an agentive ontology. Such methods must be applicable to all aspects of human experience, the subjective and agentive aspects, as well as the behavioural and the neurophysiological (...)

We assert that one of the examples used by Keller & Miller (K&M), namely, autism, is indeed common, and heritable, but we question whether it is harmful. We provide a brief review of cognitive science literature in which autistics perform superiorly to non-autistics in perceptual, reasoning, and comprehension tasks; however, these superiorities are often occluded and are instead described as dysfunctions. A number of operationally defined methods exist for pretreating plant tissues in order to measure C, N, and O isotopes. Because these isotope measurements are used to infer information about environmental conditions that existed at the time of tissue growth, it is important that these pretreatments remove compounds that may have exchanged isotopes or have been synthesized after the original formation of these tissues. In stable isotope studies, many pretreatment methods focus on isolating "cellulose" from the bulk tissue sample because (...)

There is enormous potential for building-focused applications to improve operation and sustainability, both for classical uses like modeling or fault detection as well as innovative ones like occupant-driven control or grid-aware energy management. We show that a building application stack – that addresses shortcomings of existing antiquated architectures by democratizing sensor data, constructing a framework for reliable and fault-tolerant operation of concurrent applications, and establishing an application programming interface to promote portability throughout the building stock – enables development of advanced (...)

This dissertation examines Rousseau's claim in Emile that man is not only naturally good but also can become naturally just. Rousseau contends that man is free by nature, unencumbered by obligation: natural man, like the child, is amoral. Yet Rousseau argues also that moral virtue is the culmination of natural human development: natural man, like the child can become moral. A single education can make Emile good both for himself and for others. Despite his contentions that natural man is amoral (...)

    Stereospecific cross-coupling reactions of aryl-substituted tetrahydrofurans, tetrahydropyrans, and lactones.E. J. Tollefson, D. D. Dawson, C. A. Osborne & E. R. Jarvo - unknown
© 2014 American Chemical Society. The stereospecific ring-opening of O-heterocycles to provide acyclic alcohols and carboxylic acids with controlled formation of a new C-C bond is reported. These reactions provide new methods for synthesis of acyclic polyketide analogs with complex stereochemical arrays. Stereoselective synthesis of the cyclic template is utilized to control relative configuration; subsequent stereospecific nickel-catalyzed ring-opening affords the acyclic product. Aryl-substituted tetrahydrofurans and tetrahydropyrans undergo nickel-catalyzed Kumada-type coupling with a range of Grignard reagents to furnish acyclic alcohols with (...)
