From ancient times to the present, the discovery and presentation of new proofs of previously established theorems has been a salient feature of mathematical practice. Why? What purposes are served by such endeavors? And how do mathematicians judge whether two proofs of the same theorem are essentially different? Consideration of such questions illuminates the roles that proofs play in the validation and communication of mathematical knowledge and raises issues that have yet to be resolved by mathematical logicians. The thesis of this article is that engagement and suffering are essential aspects of responsible caregiving. The sense of medical responsibility engendered by engaged caregiving is referred to herein as clinical phronesis, i.e. practical wisdom in health care, or, simply, practical health care wisdom. The idea of clinical phronesis calls to mind a relational or communicative sense of medical responsibility which can best be understood as a kind of virtue ethics, yet one that is informed by the exigencies of moral (...) discourse and dialogue, as well as by the technical rigors of formal reasoning. The ideal of clinical phronesis is not (necessarily) contrary to the more common understandings of medical responsibility as either beneficence or patient autonomy — except, of course, when these notions are taken in their disengaged form (reflecting the malaise of modern medicine). Clinical phronesis, which gives rise to a deeper, broader, and richer, yet also to a more complex, sense than these other notions connote, holds the promise both of expanding, correcting, and perhaps completing what it currently means to be a fully responsible health care provider. In engaged caregiving, providers appropriately suffer with the patient, that is, they suffer the exigencies of the patient's affliction (though not his or her actual loss) by consenting to its inescapability. In disengaged caregiving — that ruse Katz has described as the silent world of doctor and patient — provides may deny or refuse any given connection with the patient, especially the inevitability of the patient's affliction and suffering (and, by parody of reasoning, the inevitability of their own. When, however, responsibility is construed qualitatively as an evaluative feature of medical rationality, rather than quantitatively as a form of calculative reasoning only, responsibility can be viewed more broadly as not only a matter of science and will, but of language and communication as well — in particular, as the task of responsibly narrating and interpreting the patient's story of illness. In summary, the question is not whether phronesis can save the life of medical ethics — only responsible humans can do that! Instead, the question should be whether phronesis, as an ethical requirement of health care delivery, can prevent the death of medical ethics. (shrink)

We question the role given to depiction in Clark and Fischer's account of interaction with social robots. Specifically, we argue that positing a unique cognitive process for handling depiction is evolutionarily implausible and empirically redundant because the phenomena it is intended to explain are not limited to depictive contexts and are better explained by reference to more general cognitive processes.

This study evaluated the biological dimension of meditation and self-transcendent states. A convenience sample of 513 participants was drawn from attendees at a 4-day guided meditation workshop. Half were randomly assigned to an active placebo control intervention. All were assessed on a variety of measures, both psychological [anxiety, pain, posttraumatic stress disorder, positive emotions, and transcendent states], and physiological. Additional biological assessments including salivary immunoglobulin-A, cortisol, and Quantitative Electroencephalography were obtained from subset of the Experimental group. No significant difference in (...) psychological symptoms or positive emotions was observed between Experimental and placebo groups at baseline. At post-test, significant improvements were noted in the Experimental group, including a 49.5% median increase in SIgA, though cortisol remained unchanged. qEEG z-score analysis identified sustained stress reduction, including delta frequency band amplitude increases, high beta decreases, and faster acquisition of sustained alpha states. Psychological symptoms also improved on all measures. At 6-month follow-up, PTSD and somatic symptoms significantly improved from baseline, and post-test versus 6-month follow-up results indicated significant increases in happiness and spiritual and physical oneness, along with decreases in depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that autonomic self-regulation and transcendent states may be measured in both biological and psychological dimensions and are associated with pervasive health benefits. Often regarded simply as a nuisance in clinical drug trials in which the aim is to separate drug response from placebo response in a statistically significant manner, the placebo response has important implications. These implications relate to the nature of illness, the study of non-specific factors in the treatment setting that are related to clinical improvement, methods of enhancing these non-specific sources of benefit, and the neurobiology that is associated with the placebo response. Specific sources of clinical improvement in medical (...) and psychological treatment generally consist of drugs or clear interventions that appear to directly contribute to the desired treatment. Non-specific factors, on the other hand, include the clinician–patient relationship, installation of hope, relationship with authority, and other such factors that are more implicit to treatment and may contribute to the placebo response. Our understanding of how these non-specific aspects of treatment relate to clinical improvement and ways of enhancing these non-pharmacological elements of therapy may form important aspects of treatment. Furthermore, an important, albeit potentially overlooked element of the placebo response are clinical-trial designs and methodologies, themselves. Specific neurobiological changes also appear to be associated with the placebo response in at least some cases. Finally, it is suggested that the placebo response may in some instances represent a type of brain plasticity in which expectation and desire — agency — can result in specific changes in brain function that either may mirror or differ from the effects of certain drugs. This dissertation critically examines two possible approaches to interpreting the meaning of freedom--"reason" and "dread." My thesis is, first, that, although freedom has most often been understood conceptually in the reflection of Western ethics in terms of reason or rationality, this framework nonetheless partially obfuscates "what is going on" primordially in the experience of freedom, that is, in the eventfulness of freedom's own occurrence in the human world of life and death; secondly, that this occurrence can be understood more fully (...) in terms of the event of its own actual occurrence--its own eventfulness--than in rational terms; thirdly, since the context or framework of freedom's occurrence is dread--the felt immediacy of the threat of nonbeing in existence --its significance can be understood more completely in terms of dread than reason. ;Specifically, several seminal interpretations of freedom--those of Aristotle, Kant, and Paul Ricoeur--are critically accounted and some of their difficulties are described. Then a novel account of "freedom in dread" is formulated in reference to the Grand Inquisitor's understanding of this phenomenon in the "Legend" from Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. The two characters are shown to symbolize two radically opposed "ways of freedom" which I call "Worship" and "Risk" . Worship and Risk are characterized as two primordial ways of responding to freedom as dread, that is, to the terrible eventfulness of our own occurrence in the world. Several implications of these two "ways of freedom" are explored and this conception is compared to the three interpretations of "freedom in reason"--those of Aristotle, Kant, and Paul Ricoeur. This article investigates the impact of Locke's philosophy of language on his political thought. It argues that certain aspects of his linguistic theory have a devastating impact on his vision of civil society. There are three ways in which the Lockean commonwealth is threatened. First, Locke's belief in the sovereign and constitutive power of words impedes the toleration that he holds so dear. Second, his fear that men break the compacts that make language work throws into doubt the possibility of (...) the trust that generates and sustains political society. Third, his radical thesis of semantic instability undermines the foundations of community: sociability, the 'social contract' and culture. While Locke's politics might, in the light of this analysis, appear impossible, I end by suggesting that these tensions capture the ineliminably problematic character of political life. (shrink)

ABSTRACT In recent years there has been intense debate regarding the level of medical care provided to ‘standard care’ control groups in clinical trials in developing countries, particularly when the research sponsors come from wealthier countries. The debate revolves around the issue of how to define a standard of medical care in a country in which many people are not receiving the best methods of medical care available in other settings. In this paper, we argue that additional dimensions of the (...) standard of care have been hitherto neglected, namely, the structure and efficiency of the national health system. The health system affects locally available medical care in two important ways: first, the system may be structured to provide different levels of care at different sites with referral mechanisms to direct patients to the appropriate level of care. Second, inefficiencies in this system may influence what care is available in a particular locale. As a result of these two factors locally available care cannot be equated with a national ‘standard’. A reasonable approach is to define the national standard of care as the level of care that ought to be delivered under conditions of appropriate and efficient referral in a national system. This standard is the minimum level of care that ought to be provided to a control group. There may be additional moral arguments for higher levels of care in some circumstances. This health system analysis may be helpful to researchers and ethics committees in designing and reviewing research involving standard care control groups in developing country research. (shrink)

A common quest among theoretical psychologists is the transformation of psychology to accommodate human agency and meaning. Several strong experimental methods are used in cognitive neuroscience but are based almost entirely upon a mechanistic ontology. A step toward rapprochement is proposed using precise and powerful experimental methods that are holistic, individualized, and compatible with an agentive ontology. Such methods must be applicable to all aspects of human experience, the subjective and agentive aspects, as well as the behavioural and the neurophysiological (...) Multivariate methods are capable of expressing and capturing the holistic isomorphism among multiple aspects of human existence and might even help provide insight into the mind-body problem. We assert that one of the examples used by Keller & Miller (K&M), namely, autism, is indeed common, and heritable, but we question whether it is harmful. We provide a brief review of cognitive science literature in which autistics perform superiorly to non-autistics in perceptual, reasoning, and comprehension tasks; however, these superiorities are often occluded and are instead described as dysfunctions. A number of operationally defined methods exist for pretreating plant tissues in order to measure C, N, and O isotopes. Because these isotope measurements are used to infer information about environmental conditions that existed at the time of tissue growth, it is important that these pretreatments remove compounds that may have exchanged isotopes or have been synthesized after the original formation of these tissues. In stable isotope studies, many pretreatment methods focus on isolating "cellulose" from the bulk tissue sample because (...) cellulose does not exchange C and O isotopes after original synthesis. We investigated the efficacy of three commonly applied pretreatment methods, the Brendel method and two variants of the Brendel method, the Jayme-Wise method and successive acid/base/acid washes, for use on three tissue types. We then compared the effect of each method on C and O isotope composition, C and N content, and chemical composition of the residue produced ). Our results raised concerns over use of the Brendel method as published, as it both added C and N to the sample and left a residue that contains remnant lipids and waxes. Furthermore, this method resulted in 18O values that are enriched relative to the other methods. Modifying the Brendel method by adding a NaOH step solved many of these problems. We also found that processed residues vary by tissue type. For wood and root tissues, the 13C NMR spectra and the 18O and 13C data showed only small differences between residues for the Jayme-Wise and modified Brendel methods. However, for leaf tissue, 13C NMR data showed that Jayme-Wise pretreatments produced residues that are more chemically similar to cellulose than the other methods. The acid/base/acid washing method generated 13C NMR spectra with incomplete removal of lignin for all tissues tested and both isotopic, and 13C NMR results confirmed that this method should not be used if purified cellulose is desired. © 2005 American Chemical Society. We report on an experimental case study of personalized lighting controls built on top of an infrastructure designed to enable rapid development of applications in commercial buildings. Our personalized lighting controls use an existing standard commercial building lighting automation system and require no new hardware to deploy. PLC presents occupants with a "shared virtual light switch" accessible online and easily viewable on smart phones by scanning a QR code. It embodies three important design principles: individual empowerment with localized human-centered resolution, (...) token effort for energy consumption and return to a low-power state when inactive. After deploying our lighting controls on two new floors of a large research building on campus, we show a sustainable reduction in lighting energy of 50% to 70% on both floors over 12 weeks, continuing to this day. These savings are found to come from a combination of reducing brightness and keeping lights on less often, especially during evenings and weekends. (shrink)

There is enormous potential for building-focused applications to improve operation and sustainability, both for classical uses like modeling or fault detection as well as innovative ones like occupant-driven control or grid-aware energy management. We show that a building application stack – that addresses shortcomings of existing antiquated architectures by democratizing sensor data, constructing a framework for reliable and fault-tolerant operation of concurrent applications, and establishing an application programming interface to promote portability throughout the building stock – enables development of advanced (...) applications. We observe the growing importance of applications that integrate sensors and actuators from the building infrastructure with those from “add-on” networks, and show how this design pattern is further empowered by the architecture. To prove the efficacy of the approach, we implement two advanced environmental conditioning applications on a large, commercial building that was not designed for either of them: a demand-controlled ventilation system for balancing air quality considerations and energy use in conference and class room settings and a demand-controlled filtration system for conserving recirculating fan energy in an intermittently occupied cleanroom setting. The DCV application is able to reduce air quality threshold violations by over 95% and concurrently reduce ventilation energy consumption by over 80%, while the DCF application can reduce recirculating fan power consumption by half with no repercussions on air quality when the room is occupied. Further, the portability of these applications highlights the potential of the architecture to enable widespread and rapid application development throughout the building stock. (shrink)

This dissertation examines Rousseau's claim in Emile that man is not only naturally good but also can become naturally just. Rousseau contends that man is free by nature, unencumbered by obligation: natural man, like the child, is amoral. Yet Rousseau argues also that moral virtue is the culmination of natural human development: natural man, like the child can become moral. A single education can make Emile good both for himself and for others. Despite his contentions that natural man is amoral (...) and asociable and that moral virtue presumes the existence of unnatural civil society, then, Rousseau nonetheless claims that virtue is in some sense natural to man. In Emile Rousseau argues that moral virtue accords with human nature and that standards of justice inhere in nature: he provides an account of natural right consistent with natural asociability. ;The education in moral virtue is shown in this dissertation to be consonant with both the asocial and amoral being that man was originally and the social being he has become. Examining and assessing the claims that this education is natural reveals that Rousseau both denies and admits natural human sociability. For he admits the existence of intrinsically social sentiments that are natural and which, properly cultivated according to nature, provide a basis for moral virtue: sociability is the natural culmination of the characteristic human trait of perfectibility. Yet he indicates that moral education requires the initial suppression of these sentiments, in order, I contend, to recreate for the child the sense of freedom guaranteed natural man by his asociability. The suppression of innately social sentiments and the corresponding denial of original human sociability, I argue, are essential to foster the conviction of freedom. This conviction proves both to be necessary to moral virtue, as the premise of binding moral commitment, and a reflection of the condition of asocial man in the original state of nature. Virtue accords with man's nature--justice has a natural basis--and recaptures freedom within civilization. (shrink)

© 2014 American Chemical Society. The stereospecific ring-opening of O-heterocycles to provide acyclic alcohols and carboxylic acids with controlled formation of a new C-C bond is reported. These reactions provide new methods for synthesis of acyclic polyketide analogs with complex stereochemical arrays. Stereoselective synthesis of the cyclic template is utilized to control relative configuration; subsequent stereospecific nickel-catalyzed ring-opening affords the acyclic product. Aryl-substituted tetrahydrofurans and tetrahydropyrans undergo nickel-catalyzed Kumada-type coupling with a range of Grignard reagents to furnish acyclic alcohols with (...) high diastereoselectivity. Enantioenriched lactones undergo Negishi-type cross-coupling with dimethylzinc to afford enantioenriched carboxylic acids. Application in a two-step enantioselective synthesis of an antidyslipidemia agent is demonstrated. (shrink)
