CATEGORY: Philosophy play; historical fiction; comedy; social criticism. -/- STORYLINE: Tim, a physics professor with a certain taste for young female university students, recently got a new appointment at a London university. But, as it turns out, he is still unsatisfied. Why? Is it because Rachael unexpectedly left him under strange circumstances? Or does it have to do with his sudden departure from another university? Or is it his research? When Tim meets Christianus for a brown-bag discussion on philosophy and (...)

  4. On Samuel Clarke's Four Types of Deists.Bo C. Klintberg - 2011 - Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie 93 (1):85-99.
This paper features a detailed philosophical classification of the four types of deists that Samuel Clarke presents in the second series of the Boyle Lectures for promoting Christianity (1705). In the course of this paper I determine, for each type of deist, the truth values of twelve important propositions, and I show that these four types of deists may be categorized as (1) ‘no-providence’, (2) ‘physical-laws-providence’, (3) ‘moral-but-no-afterlife’, and (4) ‘moral-and-afterlife’. Using an accompanying table of propositions as a visualization tool, (...)

With mathematical reconstructions and philosophical arguments I show that Toomer's 1973 paper never contained any conclusive evidence for his claims that Hipparchus had a 3438'-based chord table, and that the Indians used that table to compute their sine tables. Recalculating Toomer's reconstructions with a 3600' radius -- i.e. the radius of the chord table in Ptolemy's Almagest, expressed in 'minutes' instead of 'degrees' -- generates Hipparchan-like ratios similar to those produced by a 3438' radius. It is therefore possible that the (...)

The role of chance in historiography is a major question for the analysis of cultural transformations. Its main subject are the transformations of contingentia itself, which has undergone substantial changes in its mythical forms (as Tyche or Fortuna) as well in its historical expressions in philosophy, theology, politics, sciences, literature and art.

Can an Online Reading Camp Teach 5-Year-Old Children to Read?Yael Weiss, Jason D. Yeatman, Suzanne Ender, Liesbeth Gijbels, Hailley Loop, Julia C. Mizrahi, Bo Y. Woo & Patricia K. Kuhl - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Literacy is an essential skill. Learning to read is a requirement for becoming a self-providing human being. However, while spoken language is acquired naturally with exposure to language without explicit instruction, reading and writing need to be taught explicitly. Decades of research have shown that well-structured teaching of phonological awareness, letter knowledge, and letter-to-sound mapping is crucial in building solid foundations for the acquisition of reading. During the COVID-19 pandemic, children worldwide did not have access to consistent and structured teaching (...)

Towards a relational conceptualization of empathy.Jolanda Dijke, Inge Nistelrooij, Pien Bos & Joachim Duyndam - 2020 - Nursing Philosophy 21 (3):e12297.
Empathy is a fundamental concept in health care and nursing. In academic literature, it has been primarily defined as a personal ability, act or experience. The relational dimensions of empathy have received far less attention. In our view, individualistic conceptualizations are restricted and do not adequately reflect the practice of empathy in daily care. We argue that a relational conceptualization of empathy contributes to a more realistic, nuanced and deeper understanding of the functions and limitations of empathy in professional care (...)

The 'Vehicle of Soul' and the Debate over the Origin of this Concept.Abraham P. Bos - 2007 - Philologus: Zeitschrift für Antike Literatur Und Ihre Rezeption 151 (1):31-50.
The modern debate over the hellenistic doctrine of the fine-material soul-vehicle, including contributions by R. C. Kissling, E. R. Dodds, and J. Halfwassen, has seen an increasingly earlier date of origin being attributed to this doctrine. But the author who introduced the theory remains an unknown quantity. In this article I will argue that the author of this doctrine can be no other than Aristotle.

From ecological to moral psychology: Morality and the psychology of Egon Brunswik.Bo Earle - 2000 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 20 (2):196-207.
Moral judgment and behavior are uniquely resistant to psychological analysis because morality generally is defined in terms that do not admit of psychological predication. Principal among these is the idea of freedom. An agent can act morally only on the condition that it is also free to do otherwise. The respective theoretical premises of C. Sunstein and E. Brunswik are contrasted in order to suggest that Brunswikian theory constitutes a distinct and highly promising new approach to the psychology of moral (...)

Taylorian points of an algebraic curve and bivariate Hermite interpolation.Len Bos & Jean-Paul Calvi - 2008 - Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa- Classe di Scienze 7 (3):545-577.
We introduce and study the notion of Taylorian points of algebraic curves in $\mathbb{C}^2$, which enables us to define intrinsic Taylor interpolation polynomials on curves. These polynomials in turn lead to the construction of a well-behaved Hermitian scheme on curves, of which we give several examples. We show that such Hermitian schemes can be collected to obtain Hermitian bivariate polynomial interpolation schemes.

Subjective knowledge should not be separated from anthropology. But, unfortunately, this is the prevailing practice. The anthropology of Bo expresses the presence of Africa in anthropology. The authenticity of the African is found in his fervent practice of Bo. His thought, action, relations with others-his entire way of life-is based on the practice of Bo insofar as he wears Bo names. Bo is deeply rooted in his cultural values and comprises the background for all social organizations and thus acts as (...)

Reading these essays has shown me a great deal, both about the substantive issues I have dealt with and about how to do philosophy. On the former front, they show that I have missed some points and overstated others, and sometimes just been unable to penetrate the fog. On the latter front, they show how hard it is to write philosophy that works--and this is the point that stands out for me as I reflect on these rich and varied essays. (...)
