Abstract

The discovery of the New World had a strong impact in European thought in many different areas from Theology to Geography. This led to the need of a deep reassessment of the prevailing image of reality and of traditional knowledge. Human nature in particular acquired a new meaning after contact with the natives of the New World, raising the question of the importance of habits and customs as well as of the rights of Man.
