Reading Information Graphics: The Role of Spatial Proximity and Dual Attentional Guidance.Jana Holsanova, Kenneth Holmqvist & Nils Holmberg - unknown
In a naturalistic newspaper reading study, two pairs of information graphics have been designed to study the effects of a) the spatial contiguity principle and b) the dual scripting principle by means of eye tracking measurements. Our data clearly show that different spatial layouts have a significant effect on readers’ eye movement behaviour. An integrated format with spatial contiguity between text and illustrations facilitates integration. Reading of information graphics is moreover significantly enhanced by a serial format, resulting from dual attentional (...)

Reading or Scanning? A Study of Newspaper and Net Paper Reading.Kenneth Holmqvist, Jana Holsanova, Maria Barthelson & Daniel Lundqvist - 2003 - Mind 2 (3):4.
Net paper readers have been shown to read deeper into articles than newspaper readers. It has also been claimed that newspaper readers rather scan than read newspapers. Do these findings mean that net paper readers read proportionally more than newspaper readers? This paper presents results showing that in fact net paper readers scan more and read less than newspaper readers. We furthermore investigate whether this result can be expained by the difference in layout, navigation structure and purpose of reading between (...)

  5. Tracking Visual Segmentation: Connecting Semiotic and Cognitive Perspectives.Morten Boeriis & Jana Holsanova - unknown
This article introduces a new methodology for deriving the dynamics of visual segmentation in relation to the underlying cognitive processes involved. The method combines social semiotics approaches to visual segmentation with eye-tracking studies on authentic image viewing and simultaneous image description. The authors' thesis is that visual segmentation suggested by the social semiotic approach is traceable in the behaviour of the viewers who perceive images while creating meaning. From this perspective, visual zooming is seen as both perceptually, cognitively, grammatically and (...)

In the Eye of the Beholder: Visual Communication From a Recipient Perspective.Jana Holsanova - unknown
Why do viewers perceive and interpret visuals differently despite common perceptual and cognitive mechanisms? The article addresses a number of challenges in visual communication and underlines the need for empirical analyses from a recipient perspective. Perception and interpretation of visuals is seen as an interactive meeting between the recipient, the multimodal message and the situational context. The form and contents of the visual message serves as a starting point. However, even personal characteristics of the viewers modulate perception and interpretation of (...)

Reconstruction of Focus Movements in Spoken Discourse.Kenneth Holmqvist & Jana Holsanova - unknown
In this paper, we concentrate on the reconstruction of the participants' internal images during spoken discourse. Our question is: What happens if the speaker draws to illustrate something in the discourse? The focus movements should then leave traces in the drawing, that could tell us how the focus of attention moves over the undrawn internal image of speaker and listener. The first part of this paper discusses the correlation between spoken discourse and focus movements, exemplified by an analysis where a speaker (...)
