The public controversy over results of modern biological sciences, especially the new reproductive technologies, is accelerating. Undoubtedly, surrogate motherhood is the most controversial of them. For most surrogate motherhood agreements, the gestational mother is expected to give up the child that she has given birth to to the other couple – for this reason surrogate motherhood is found controversial. Moreover, many people think that it is the equivalent of selling children, can be exploitative of the surrogate, and violates a mother’s (...) fundamental right to rise her child. Even altruistic surrogacy is not considered to be moral because women who choose to bear children voluntarily for someone else reap disdain, and are seen as cold, heartless, and mercenary, because they seem to give away their babies. There are also a lot of legal problems. First the answer to the question which woman is the mother must be given: the one who donates her ova or the gestational mother. Furthermore the problem of baby-selling and surrogate motherhood ought to be analysed and compared. In Polish law there is no direct regulation of surrogate motherhood – for this reason foreign legislations yield suggestions. Some suggestions can be taken from Christian, Jewish and Buddhist morality. Undoubtedly the last word belongs to us, but we should not forget the baby and its rights. (shrink)

John Paul II emphasized the role of culture in the process of integration in Europe. It is culture and values that allow to find and strengthen the common identity of Europe. John Paul II believed them to be more important than economics and institutional ways of integration. Mass media play the important part in today’s culture. The press, radio, television and other electronic media are sources of knowledge, places for exchanging ideas and sharing experiences. The most important collocations of media (...) in papal thought are: service (duty), responsibility, dialogue and formation. Media should serve people by showing them the objective truth, defending human rights, promoting freedom, justice, solidarity and peace. The responsibility of mass media concerns reliability and integrity, care for customers, especially young and disdained. Dialogue, as John Paul II perceived it, has several dimensions: exchanging ideas and finding the best way of development, sharing experiences and abolishing discriminatory stereotypes, ecumenical and inter-religious meetings. Those assignments should be conducted by personal development of a journalist, which includes professional skills and formation: ethical and spiritual, courage and wisdom. John Paul II saw a great role of social communication in the process of integration, especially in the important task of uniting Europe. The truth and dialogue provided by responsible and reliable media should help people abolish the walls in people’s hearts and establish united Europe open to all inhabitants, who differ but are connected by love, values and culture. This book explores the question of whether the ideal right to science and culture exists. It proposes that the human right to science and culture is of a utopian character and argues for the necessity of the existence of such a right by developing a philosophical project situated in postmodernity, based on the assumption of ‘thinking in terms of excendence’. Temat to szeroko dyskutowany w ostatnich czasach, stąd wydawać by się mogło, że zorganizowanie jeszcze jednej sesji, która przyciągnęłaby uwagę środowiska filozofów religii, będzie przedsięwzięciem wyjątkowo trudnym. Tymczasem monachijska debata zasłużyła sobie na miano wydarzenia. O jej atrakcyjności zadecydował fakt, że została pomyślana jako próba ożywienia dialogu pomiędzy filozofami nawiązującymi do tradycji kontynentalnej z przedstawicielami filozofii analitycznej. Tego rodzaju ekumeniczne inicjatywy nalezą w tej dziedzinie do rzadkości. (...) Ten swoisty izolacjonizm ma wiele przyczyn, a kością niezgody jest między innymi stosunek do Kanta. Postkantowska kontynentalna filozofia religii, kładąca nacisk na epistemologię i fenomenologię doświadczenia religijnego, postrzega anglosaski renesans badań nad klasycznymi problemami teodycealnymi jako nawrót do przedkrytycznego dogmatyzmu. Z kolei niektórzy analityczni filozofowie religii zdają się uprawiać swą dyscyplinę w taki sposób, jak gdyby kopernikański przewrót Kanta uważali za niebyły, a czasem nazywają expressis verbis epoką nowożytną okresem błędów i wypaczeń. Epistemologiczne zagadnienie racjonalności religii należy do kręgu zainteresowań obydwu wymienionych tradycji, stad możliwe jest tu połączenie wysiłków w celu uporządkowania tematyki i oceny aktualnego stanu refleksji.
