  2. Defending Davidson’s Anti-skepticism Argument: A Reply to Otavio Bueno.Mohammad Reza Vaez Shahrestani - 2017 - Philosophy Study 7 (11).
In the article of Bueno titled “Davidson and Skepticism: How Not to Respond to the Skeptic,” he intends to demonstrate that although Davidson’s theory of Coherence holds many attractions, it does not entail a response to any kinds of skepticism including Global, Lottery, and Pyrrhonian. In this study, the goal is to criticize the work of Prof. Bueno in connection with two criticisms raised by him over Davidson’s anti-skeptical strategy. Further, by giving some reasons in favor of Davidson’s anti-skepticism argument, (...)

On the Nature of Persons; Persons as Constituted Events.Mohammad Reza Tahmasbi - 2021 - Metaphysica 22 (1):45-61.
The diachronic question of persons deals with personal identity over time: “In virtue of what conditions is a person, P1, at t1, the same person, P2, at t2?” To answer the question, I suggest expanding the constitution theory from a static definition to a dynamic definition. ‘Life’ is an event and the stream of consciousness is an event too. Reflective self-consciousness—which I take to be definitive of persons—is an event. Persons are irreducible constituted events who remain the same through time (...)

The Ontological Distinction between Persons and Their Bodies.Mohammad Reza Tahmasbi - 2022 - Metaphysica 23 (2):307-317.
Lynne Rudder Baker’s constitution theory of persons explains the relationship between persons and their bodies. Baker’s theory can explain the ontological status of persons. However, her explanation of the distinction between persons and their bodies faces a problem. In this paper, first, I show that her account, in fact, does not amount to a real distinction between persons and their bodies. Then, by discussing the notion of ‘derivatively having property,’ I propose a notion of constitution which is compatible with the (...)

The productivity of researchers and the impact of the work they do are a preoccupation of universities, research funding agencies, and sometimes even researchers themselves. The h-index is the most popular of different metrics to measure these activities. This research deals with presenting a practical approach to model the h-index based on the total number of citations and the duration from the publishing of the first article. To determine the effect of every factor on h, we applied a set of (...)

Turing does not provide an explanation for substituting the original question of his test – i.e., “Can machines think?” with “Can a machine pass the imitation game?” – resulting in an argumentative gap in his main thesis. In this article, I argue that a positive answer to the second question would mean attributing the ability of linguistic interactions to machines; while a positive answer to the original question would mean attributing the ability of thinking to machines. In such a situation, (...)

While the merits of the naturalistic approach to various epistemological problems are vigorously debated by philosophers, the idea that psychology could be relevant to virtue epistemology has attracted little attention. My dissertation attempts to address this neglect by offering three case studies in the relevance of psychology to virtue epistemology. ;In the first study, I present psychological findings on the trait of need for cognition. My discussion illustrates how empirical research can discover previously unrecognized virtues and their social aspects, and (...)

Relying on the applicability of principles of Transcendent Philosophy for reconstructing religious beliefs, Aqa Ali Mudarres has tried to give a new explanation of “bodily resurrection”. He does this by appealing to the purely Sadraian philosophical principles as well as his method in which he begins by agreeing with popular beliefs and ends with a departure from them. Appealing to some Sadraian ontological principles as “substantial motion” as well as his principles of self-knowledge, Mudarres explains bodily resurrection to be the (...)

Mulla Sadra's philosophy has elements of Peripatetic Philosophy as well as the true foundation of Illuminationism. Mulla Sadra was able to combine his intellectual intuition with gnosis and derive the meaning of "being". He further joined this meaning with thesophical principles and based it on a logical foundation. It seems that the issue that Mulla Sadra was most preoccupied with was the corporeal resurrection. Mulla Sadra finally solved this issue in his celebrated book, Asfar. He laid the foundation for this (...)

The absence of a separate entry or section on “truth” in the _Critique of Pure Reason_, the presence of some ambiguous, complicated and problematic-interpretable expressions and utterances in some parts of that work, and the formation of some extreme contradictory interpretations concerning these utterances on the part of some of Kant’s commentators, are the most important obstacles encountered by contemporary Kantian scholars in presenting a unitary, coherent and transparent view of Kant’s theory of truth. North, Seamus Heaney’s fourth volume of poetry, deals with the nature of the subject in a problematic society, as it is the scene of conflict between the subject and the forces, laws and traditions of society. The volume is mainly concerned with an artist’s suffering in a society where the rejection of subjugation to the norms seems impossible. Despite being in an agonizing dilemma, the speaker challenges the norms of collective identity by sticking to the intimacy of his self. The (...)

In general, there are two current views on the interpretation of the concept of objectivity in Frege. The first view addresses objectivity in the realm of ontology in which the objectivity is independent of everything even human reason. According to this view, one could call Frege’s philosophy a realist philosophy. On the contrary, the second view sees objectivity or the objective in the realm of epistemology, in which the objective is accessible to human reason as an intersubjective thing. Comparing these (...)

Man is a mixture of theoretical faculty and practical faculty, each of which play a basic role in the how of man’s life. So the relation between contemplation and action is an important question, for which philosophers, whether Islamic or Western, have offered different responses. Thus, in spite of some similarities between their philosophical and anthropological foundations, Heidegger and Mulla Sadra have expressed different responses to the question. While Heidegger holds the primacy of action on contemplation, Mulla Sadra affirms the (...)

Plotinus considers Demiurge as intellect and the Platonic ideas as its thoughts. At the same time, he does not regard the existence of these thoughts as dependent on the intellect's reflection, but each of them as an independent particular intellect, whose self-thinking requires all ideas to be thought, as if it is identical with the whole hypostasis of intellect. Based on the description of the real structure of our conception of the world, P. F. Strawson’s descriptive metaphysics, similar to Kant’s empirical Realism, deals with determining the limitations of empirical knowledge of the world. In this case, Kant’s transcendental Idealism seems to be an incoherent doctrine which can yield a skepticism which the critical philosophy seeks to solve. Strawson rejects Kant’s Transcendental Idealism in that it considers two limits, which leads to the paradox of delimitation. Yet, the question is: (...)

Heidegger's thinking of Gelassenheit is his most appropriate response to the problematic of metaphysics. In this dissertation, I first contrast Gelassenheit with metaphysical thinking in its consummation, as displayed in the thought of Nietzsche. I then retrieve the central insight of Being and Time in the death-analysis, and show that it is a result of an encounter with the Nothing and the subsequent leap beyond nihilism. I then show how Kant could have taken a similar leap in his second Critique. (...)

Philosophical-Theological Approach to Freedom.Gholam Hosein Khedri & Mohammad Reza Rezvantalab - 2009 - Journal of Philosophical Theological Research 10 (38):221-241.
Freedom, in spite of misuses of it, can be regard as one of the concepts which is prevalent as a positive concept in different countries and cultures so that every one is attached to it, and is ready to bestow his most valuable capitals to gain it. Despite such a regard of affection for it, freedom as "free will" in human nature and as "human rights" in society is still in an annulation of ambiguity for thinkers of different domains. This (...)

On Computation of Recently Defined Degree-Based Topological Indices of Some Families of Convex Polytopes via M-Polynomial.Deeba Afzal, Farkhanda Afzal, Mohammad Reza Farahani & Samia Ali - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-11.
Topological indices are of incredible significance in the field of graph theory. Convex polytopes play a significant role both in various branches of mathematics and also in applied areas, most notably in linear programming. We have calculated some topological indices such as atom-bond connectivity index, geometric arithmetic index, K-Banhatti indices, and K-hyper-Banhatti indices and modified K-Banhatti indices from some families of convex polytopes through M-polynomials. The M-polynomials of the graphs provide us with a great help to calculate the topological indices (...)

Historical Social and Indigenous Ecology Approach to Social Movements in Mexico and Latin America.José G. Vargas Hernández & Mohammad Reza Noruzi - 2010 - Asian Culture and History 2 (2):P176.
The struggle for the recognition of indigenous rights is one of the most important social movements in Mexico. Before the 1970s, existing peasant organizations did not represent indigenous concerns. Since 1975 there has been a resurgence of indigenous movements and have raised new demands and defense of their cultural values. However, indigenous social mobilization had been laid in local and regional peasant struggles across the 1970s and 1980s. Also the indigenous movement is not homogeneous and does not include all ethnic (...)
