At the beginning of the 9th c. George Syncellus began to write a universal chronicle, the second part of which was completed by the monk Theophanes. According to Byzantine tradition this monk was Theophanes the Confessor. But 10th-century sources note that this Theophanes was the grandfather or greatuncle of the emperor Constantine VII, which is historically impossible. This prompted P. Speck to invent “another Theophanes”, who lived during the second half of the 9th c. and was the editor of the (...) Chronicle of Theophanes. The hypothesis turns out to be unfounded and untenable. Also untenable and unrelated to the sources is the hypothesis of C. Zuckerman that the author of the Chronicle is another Theophanes who lived at the same time as the Confessor. This study, after an analysis of sources, proves in both cases that they are historical phantoms. (shrink)

La fouille des thermes de l'agora d'Argos a donné un sceau d'un certain Menas, stratège du thème de Céphalonie, dont le nom de famille est inconnu. Le sceau date de la fin du IXe ou du début du Xe siècle.

L'auteur s'interroge sur la séparation de la métropole unique du Péloponnèse en deux métropoles: celle de Corinthe et celle de Patras. A cause de l'absence de sources, la date de cette scission est approximativement située entre les règnes de Nicéphore Ier et de Léon VI . L'auteur, quant à lui, s'intéresse aux raisons qui l'on provoquée et aux principes qui ont régis le tracé des limites de chaque métropole.

The excavation of the Yannopoulos plot and the bathing establishments at Thasos (3rd-6th c.) This article concerns the bathing establishment excavated on the Yannopoulos property in the city of Thasos, its architectural particularities, the finds recovered, and its insertion in the urban environment. The twelve-room building, of rectangular plan, has three architectural phases. Two praefurnia, two hypocausts, and eight non-heated rooms have been distinguished. The study of this baths offers an occasion to present the totality of bathing establishments, (...) public and private, identified on the island, in the city as well as outside. During our research it has become clear that the buildings on the neighbouring Yannopoulos and Vellios plots belong to a single complex. The dating of the installations confirms the use of baths at Thasos throughout the roman and protobyzantine periods. (shrink)

Der Autor stellt in diesem Buch 23 illuminierte Handschriften des griechisch-orthodoxen Patriarchats in Jerusalem vor, die vom 11. bis zum 15. Jh. datieren.

The two works this paper focuses on (Anastasios Yannopoulos, Orthodoxy and the Problems of Contemporary World and Georgios Mantzaridis, Globalization and Universality. Phantom and Truth) represent a thorough analysis of contemporary history, in which globalization is the direction and purpose of the new vision in human relations and community. The lost of the individuality of these relations is considered to be a disease which has very strong religious and anthropological effects. L'A. souhaite apporter des rectifications à propos des remarques de P. Yannopoulos sur la Vie de S. Fantin. Le voyage d'Athènes à Larissa a du être accompli par voie terrestre et non pas par bateau. Fantin et ses amis ne venaient pas directement d'Italie, mais de la rive orientale de l'Adriatique. A Larissa, Fantin prophétise la conquête de la ville par les ennemis puis descendit au bord de la mer où il embarqua pour Thessalonique. Ces remarques voudraient contribuer à (...) une meilleure appréciation de cette Vita à la fois si riche d'informations et si mystérieuse par ses silences. (shrink)
