The ArgumentThis essay describes the emergence and stabilization in French and English experimental accounts, in second half of the seventeenth century, of the narrative sequence: X did (some process in the laboratory) and X saw (something happen), where X stands for a pronoun, I or we in English,je, nousoronin French. Focussing on the French case, it shows how the use of the collective pronounonin the experimental accounts registered in the files of the Académie des Sciences is directly related to the (...) will of this newly created institution to assert a collective authority on the production and legitimization of experimental matters-of-fact produced in the laboratory. It is argued, through the case of the discovery of the blind spot in the eye by Mariotte, that this new narrative form imbeds a construal of the experiment as a public spectacle, and of the proof as a witnessing event, which eludes the Academy's attempts to monopolize the process of fact validation and favors the diffusion and display of experiments in front of larger audiences. The question of whether a privileged witness such as the King of France who patronized the Academy could not have constituted by himself a suitable audience to ensure a full legitimization of experimental matters-of-fact while remaning within the bounds of academic practices is addressed. It is answered in the negative by providing evidence for the lack of interest of the absolute monarch in experiments. On the other hand, the outdoor practices of observation and measurement are shown to interfere in a constructive manner with the absolutist power and to capture the attention of the absolutist monarch, where laboratory experiments had failed. It is proposed that natural philosophers in the early modern period bear the burden of proof in buying credibility for the phenomena they try, by paying a tribute to the standing of the patrician elites that witness their experiments. This makes sense in a straightforward manner of the lack of interest of the King of France in a practice which exalts the power of the very group he is trying hard to control through the absolutist structure of power. In this study, we use a conversation analysis framework to understand the systematic organization of interactions in Periscope live video streams, and its crucial features: the talking heads orientation for the video stream, in common with video-mediated communication; the expectation that the streamer should attend to all messages as much as possible; the ‘loose’ organization of viewers’ responses to streamers’ turn-at-talk, as in multi-party chats. We also identify a distinctive design for streamers’ responses to messages, the ‘read-aloud and respond’ practice. (...) These distinctive features are oriented to the highly asymmetrical communicative affordances of Periscope streams. Without precluding other forms of Periscope-based activities, this systematic organization of talk and messages, coupled with the affordances of the application, favors a basic mode of topic initiation resting on a typical and minimal adjacent pair: viewer’s noticing/streamers’ reading and responding. We argue that the particular salience of this organization of topic initiation may account for the emergence of the dominant kind of use for Periscope streams, that is, the online public exposure of youth to strangers in order to elicit some conversation. Les philosophes naturels du XVIIe siècle accordent une importance croissante aux faits nouveaux et singuliers construits par des démonstrations spectaculaires réalisées devant témoins. Cet essai tente de montrer comment cette évolution s’opère comme une synthèse de deux courants auparavant disjoints, d’un côté la pratique coopérative et informelle, critique sans être véhémente, de savants dont Mersenne constitue un bon exemple dans les années 1630, et de l’autre celle des alchimistes, remettant radicalement en cause les savoirs traditionnels tout en restant viscéralement attachés (...) au secret. On montrera comment le cercle parisien qui se réunit autour du même Mersenne au milieu du siècle pour débattre des expériences du vide réalise cette synthèse particulière. Mais dans une communauté érudite intéressée surtout à employer les faits expérimentaux comme matériau nouveau dans les disputes philosophiques, et pour laquelle la correspondance privée constitue la principale source d’information sous la forme de narrations circonstanciées par des témoins des événements singuliers survenus au cours de démonstrations expérimentales, le récit à la première personne apparaît comme une ressource superflue lorsqu’il s’agit de passer au format imprimé; Pascal, par exemple, recourt dans ses traités à une description des expériences se déployant sur un registre hypothétique et syllogistique qui exclut la narration directe. Le succès ultérieur des techniques matérielles et littéraires administrant la preuve en donnant à voir le protocole expérimental peut alors être mieux compris si l’on considère la parenté que celles-ci entretiennent avec les pratiques de la lecture publique traditionnelles dans les cercles érudits, proximité qui leur permet d’enrichir la signification et d’accroître la force de persuasion de l’expérience artificielle aux yeux des mêmes audiences. People meeting a robot for the first time do not know what it is capable of and therefore how to interact with it—what actions to produce, and how to produce them. Despite social robotics’ long-standing interest in the effects of robots’ appearance and conduct on users, and efforts to identify factors likely to improve human–robot interaction, little attention has been paid to how participants evaluate their robotic partner in the unfolding of actual interactions. This paper draws from qualitative analyses of (...) video-recorded interactions between a robot and groups of participants, in the framework of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. We analyse the particular ways in which participants shape their embodied actions, how they can reproduce a prior action that failed to obtain a response from the robot; and how they explore the robot’s embodied nature. We find a set of recurrent methods or practices, showing that robot-recipient design displays not only participants’ initial assumptions about the robot’s competences, but also more importantly perhaps their continuous assessment of the robot’s behaviour, and their attempts to adapt to it. Participants locally produce and constantly revise their understanding of the robot as a more or less competent co-participant, drawing from its past, current, and projected conduct and responsiveness. We discuss the implications of these findings for research in robotics and human–robot interactions, and the value of the approach to shed new light on old questions by paying attention to the quality of gesture and the sequential organisation of interaction. Le développement de l'individualisme et les orientations actuelles du design des technologies de l'information et de la communication se combinent pour ancrer réflexivement un modèle de l'action fondé sur le modèle de la distribution. L'acteur délègue une partie des choix de plus en plus nombreux qui lui incombent à son environnement artefactuel. Dans le champ de la communication interpersonnelle, ceci se traduit par le développement d'une gestion relationnelle basée sur la « présence connectée ». Dans le domaine des communautés épistémiques (...) de type OpenSource, les individus se mobilisent souvent sur un mode de réactivité immédiate plus que par délibération individuelle. La question se pose alors du statut moral et de la possibilité d'analyser de manière indépendante un collectif et un espace public d'individus hyper-connectés, organisés, outillés et adaptés plus pour réagir rapidement que réfléchir longuement.Development of individualism and the current guidelines for the design of information technology and communications combine to anchor a model of reflexive action based on the model of the distribution. The actor delegates some choices more numerous its obligations to its environment artifactual. In the field of interpersonal communication, this translates into the development of a relationship management based on "connected presence". In the field of epistemic communities like OpenSource, individuals often involve a more immediate response mode by individual deliberation. The question then arises the moral status and the ability to analyze independently a collective and public space of hyper-connected individuals, organized, equipped and adapted to respond more quickly than think long. L'article propose de distinguer deux modèles pour décrire la fragmentation croissante des activités dans les situations de travail, fondés respectivement sur le basculement successif d'un engagement à ur autre et la pertinence à chaque instant d'une pluralité d'engagements plus ou moins « préoccupants» . Il montre comment les logiques d'innovation et de design des technologies de communication favorisent d'une part l'inscription durable de sollicitation dans l'environnement sur des modalités peu coûteuses en attention et en engagement, et d'autre par l'organisation séquentielle (...) des cours d'action. L'analyse d'un cas d'usage de la messagerie instantanée ai travail permet de saisir comment séquentialité et format de « présence obstinée » des repères se combinent pour rendre visible la préoccupation, distribuée entre le sujet et son environnement équipé: l'homme communiquant est constitué comme sujet multiacti et carrefour d'engagements pluriels.The article proposes to distinguish two models to describe the increasing fragmentation of activities in work situations, based respectively on successive tipping a commitment to other core and relevance at every moment of plurality of more or less commitments "concern" . He shows how the logic of innovation and design of communication technologies on the one hand promote sustainable solicitation registration in the environment in terms inexpensive attention and commitment, and on the other by the sequential organization courses of action. The analysis of a case of use of instant messaging have work captures how sequential format and "obstinate presence" markers combine to make visible concern, distributed between the subject and the environment equipped: the man constituted as a subject is communicating multiacti crossroads commitments and plurals. In this article we study the work and communication practices of two highly connected organizations, the members of which have all access to instant messaging on a professional basis. We document the development of a communicational genre, that of ‘quick questions’, and analyze the sequence organization of such IM conversation threads. We show how ‘quick questions’ enable the collaborative accomplishment of complex, knowledge-intensive tasks by recruiting colleagues constituted as experts capable of quickly answering information requests related to ongoing tasks. ‘Quick (...) questions’ articulate communicative practices, ‘strong’ distribution of tasks and ‘organizing’ in highly connected organizations. We argue that they enact a distinctive cognitive and moral economy based on minimal forms of interaction and exchanges, constituting a more general phenomenon. (shrink)
