Translation Through Argumentation in Medical Research and Physician-Citizenship.Gordon R. Mitchell & Kathleen M. McTigue - 2012 - Journal of Medical Humanities 33 (2):83-107.
While many "benchtop-to-bedside" research pathways have been developed in "Type I" translational medicine, vehicles to facilitate "Type II" and "Type III" translation that convert scientific data into clinical and community interventions designed to improve the health of human populations remain elusive. Further, while a high percentage of physicians endorse the principle of citizen leadership, many have difficulty practicing it. This discrepancy has been attributed, in part, to lack of training and preparation for public advocacy, time limitation, and institutional resistance. As (...)

    The Us Obesity “Epidemic”: Metaphor, Method, or Madness?Gordon R. Mitchell & Kathleen M. McTigue - 2007 - Social Epistemology 21 (4):391 – 423.
In 2000, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson mobilized the US public health infrastructure to deal with escalating trends of excess body weight. A cornerstone of this effort was a report entitled The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity. The report stimulated a great deal of public discussion by utilizing the distinctive public health terminology of an epidemic to describe the growing prevalence of obesity in the US population. We suggest (...)

The Effect of Perspective-Taking on Reasoning About Strong and Weak Belief-Relevant Arguments.Matthew T. McCrudden, Ashleigh Barnes, Erin M. McTigue, Casey Welch & Eilidh MacDonald - 2017 - Thinking and Reasoning 23 (2):115-133.
This study investigated whether perspective-taking reduces belief bias independently of argument strength. Belief bias occurs when individuals evaluate belief-consistent arguments more favourably than belief-inconsistent arguments. Undergraduates read arguments that varied with respect to belief-consistency and strength about the topic of climate change. After participants read each argument, those in the perspective-taking condition rated the argument's strength from a perspective of a climate scientist and then from their own perspectives, whereas those in the no perspective-taking condition only rated the arguments from (...)

    Blake and Tradition. [REVIEW]M. R. C. - 1969 - Review of Metaphysics 23 (1):137-137.
In this source study of the hermetic and prophetic poetry of William Blake, Kathleen Raine adds strength to the theory that it takes a poet to explain one. The present volumes, expanded from the 1962 Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts, are the result of twenty years' research; in scholarship and in style, they well might serve as a model for all source studies to come. Raine traces Blake's borrowings from Neoplatonism, from alchemy, from classical and hermetic sources, from (...)
