Toleranzkonzepte im arabisch-islamischen Kontext: Jameleddine Ben-Abdeljelil und Franz-Martin Wimmer stellen ihrem Beitrag eine allgemeine und zugleich betont realistische Begriffsdefinition von »Toleranz« voran. Toleranz bezeichnet demnach ein Set an Normen, durch die eine qualitative Mehrheit ihre Beziehungen gegenüber einer Minderheit regelt, und zwar in ihrem eigenen Interesse, allerdings ohne Absicht, den Anderen zu eliminieren. Von dieser Definition von Toleranz her können nach Ben-Abdeljelil/Wimmer sowohl die Toleranzideen in der europäischen Aufklärung als auch in der islamischen Philosophie bzw. Theologie des Mittelalters als je spezifische Ausprägungen behandelt werden. In der Auseinandersetzung mit islamischen Toleranzkonzepten wenden sich die Autoren gegen essentialistische Ansätze, die stets auf die verengende Alternative zusteuern, ob es in »der« islamischen Tradition »die« Toleranz gibt oder nicht.
