Weakness of will has perplexed philosophers since Plato's time. This chapter places some of the literature on volitional disorders and addictions in a philosophical context dating back to Plato and Aristotle in an attempt to shed light on issues that a theorist who wishes to analyze the idea of a volitional disorder will face. Key here is the notion of the irresistability and resistability of pertinent desires, which is explored in relation to George Ainslie's work on the ability to make (...) and adhere to personal rules. In this paper we sketch and defend a position on this issue while attacking a provocative alternative. Our position has its roots in a cybernetic theory of purposive behavior and is only part of the larger task of understanding all goal-directed behavior. Al is nearly finished sweeping his kitchen floor when he notices, on a counter, a corkscrew that should be put in a drawer. He intends to put the corkscrew away as soon as he is finished with the floor; but by the time he returns the broom and dustpan to the closet, he has forgotten what he intended to do. Al knows (or has a true belief) that there is something he intended to do now in the kitchen. He gazes (...) around the room and tries to recall what it was. Within a minute or so, without seeing the corkscrew, Al recalls. He puts the corkscrew away. Did Al have an intention to put the corkscrew away that persisted from the time he acquired the intention until he put the corkscrew away? That is one of my guiding questions in this article. Some scientists have reported what they regard as evidence of indeterministic brain processes that influence behavior (Brembs 2011, Maye et al. 2007). How do these reports bear on the positive side of libertarianism about free will? That is an approximation of my guiding question in this article. I make the question more precise in section 1, in light of some conceptual and scientific background. In the remainder of the article, I seek—and eventually offer—an answer. Ambas reivindican aquello que falta o que se ha perdido en la práctica médica y que se refiere sobre todo a la relación médico-paciente. La intención es la de hacer emerger el rol activo de la literatura en la reflexión biomédica. La introducción en los curricula de las Facultades de Medicina, de especiales módulos didácticos dedicados a las Ciencias Humanas, no tiene como finalidad sólo el enriquecimiento intelectual de (...) la profesión, sino persigue una finalidad rigurosamente operativa. La ventaja de la literatura es la de trasmitir información en forma humana, de acercamos a la humanidad de los otros, disminuyendo la distancia entre nosotros y el otro. La literatura toca nuestros corazones y al mismo tiempo nuestras mentes. Dialogar con la literatura y con las Ciencias Humanas en general, puede ayudar a desarrollar las capacidades como la observación, el análisis, la empatía, el espíritu crítico, fundamentales en la práctica médica. A través de la lectura de textos significativos, el futuro médico encontrará el lado humano de la medicina: la comprensión del enfermo en su unicidad, la dimensión existencial de la enfermedad, la importancia de la recuperación de un diálogo profundo entre médico y paciente.The aim of this work is to highlight the importance of the dialogue between very different disciplines trying to bring to light the value and function of literature vis-á-vis bioethical concerns. One of the main areas where literature and bioethics coalesce in important Iiterary texts is the relationship between humankind and sickness . This paper focalizes the anthropological and ethical aspects of this relationship. The intention is to encourage not just aesthetic experience but human experience of this relationship. The way in which literature deals with these aspects shows a great level of humanity and empathy. It is just by this way that the reader is fully immersed in that specific problem. Literature has a great power to awaken us to the humanity of others decreasing the distance between them and us. Literature can touch our hearts at the same time our heads. Literature provides insight into the human condition, suffering, personhood and offers a historical perspective on medical practice. Attention to literature and the arts helps to develop and nurture skills of observation, analysis, empathy and self-reflection-skills that are essential for human medical care. Through the poems, stories and essays, students will appreciate their roles not just as healers or caregivers but as compassionate human beings. They will see the importance of fostering the human side of medicine: understanding the needs of patients as unique individuals, expressing compassion and empathy in the face of tragedy and grief and making judgments in complex ethical situations. Las claves de lectura de la bioética de la producción y utilización de los OCM, adoptada en el debate actual tanto cultural como filosófico son: la filosofia de la relación entre ciencia experimental y ética, y por la filosofia de la relación entre el hombre, la naturaleza y la economía. La relación entre las ciencias experimentales y la ética se puede leer según dos perspectivas: la perspectiva cientijicista/ progresista, y la perspectiva precaucionista. La perspectiva cientificista/progresista, cayendo en las redes de (...) la falacia científica y de la falacia naturalística, sostiene que los OGM pueden ser éticamente aceptados en cuanto que hasta ahora no se ha demostrado que son dañinos. La perspecava precaucionista, por el contrario, basada en un prejuicio sustancialmente anticientífico, sostiene que la ciencia no ofrece elementos de certeza sobre la ausencia de daño y que, por lo tanto, compete al derecho establecer los criterios de aceptación ética de la biotecnología. La orientación personalista toma distancia entre ambas, expresando los siguientes puntos de vista: las ciencias experimentales, debido a su estatuto epistemológico, no pueden ofrecer elementos de certeza absoluta sobre la inocuidad de los OGM, y deben entonces incrementar la experimentación de caso por caso y el seguimiento a largo plazo: los datos experimentales que hasta ahora se tienen, ofrecen elementos que son una prueba para establecer su condición de no ser dañinos y se consideran irrenunciables para un juicio moral, que debe, sin embargo, tener en cuenta elelnentos de valoración extracientífica. El otro fundamento filosófico de refrencia, que es la relación del hombre con la naturaleza y la economía, se centra en la sustentabilidad, que es un concepto de carácter económico. Los criterios de la sustentabilidad débil y de la sustentabilidad fuerte consideran respectivamente el predorninio del desarrollo económico sobre la naturaleza, o bien, la prioridad de la preservación absoluta de la naturaleza sobre el desarrollo. Los diversos significados de la sustentabilidad están motivados por conceptos sobre la naturaleza radicalmente diversos: la naturaleza como recurso y la naturaleza como bien intangible. La orientación personalista permite superar la dicotomía del incremento del desarrollo con relación a la tutela de la naturaleza, con un cambio radical de perspectiva: un desarrollo ya no desenfrenado y autónomo, que se debe tornar en administración prudente, y una naturaleza ya no considerada como finalidad en sí misma, sino que se debe considerar como un don. El concepto de administración del don ahonda sus raíces en el libro del Génesis, en donde está inscrito que Dios creó al hombre y lo puso en eljardín del Edén, para que lo cultivara y lo custodiara. El imperativo de cultivar reclama la responsahilidad del homhre en la custodia del se/~ tanto el ser de las cosas, como el ser del hombre, que desde la creación están inescindihlemente conexos. Y es justamente la conexión original que impone a la bioétiea estas preguntas de fondo: en nuestra relación con la naturaleza, ¿ qué cosa perdemos o adquirimos de nosotros mismos?; Qué tipo de hombres nos volvemos? En definitiva, el verdadero desarrollo que estamos llamados a realizar no contempla la economía y el tener cada vez más, sino la plenitud de una humanidad auténtica, y por tanto, ser más mediante el actuar virtuosamente: un actuar prudente, con templanza y por último, pero no menos importante, con justicia. This contribution to a symposium on an article by Roy Baumeister, A. William Crescioni, and Jessica Alquist focuses on a tension between compatibilist and incompatibilist elements in that article. In their discussion of people’s beliefs about free will, Baumeister et al. sometimes sound like incompatibilists; but in their presentation of their work on psychological processes of free will, they sound more like compatibilists than like incompatibilists. It is suggested that Baumeister and coauthors are attempting to study free will in a (...) metaphysically neutral way and that, because this is so, the incompatibilist elements of the article are out of place. In this review essay on Mele's Free Will and Luck, I evaluate the 'daring soft libertarian' view presented in the heart of the book, and in particular the way that it provides an answer to the objection that introducing indeterminism into one's view of freedom merely adds an element of luck and so undermines freedom. I also compare the view's strengths and weaknesses to those of traditional libertarian views. Finally, I consider the 'zygote' argument that Mele takes to (...) be his reason for remaining agnostic about whether determinism is compatible with freedom, and argue that if one accepts the main arguments presented earlier in the book, one should not let this argument stand in the way of accepting compatibilism. Most of us have had the experience of resisting our currently strongest desire, for example, resisting the desire to eat another cookie when eating another cookie is what we most want to do. The puzzle of synchronic self‐control, however, says that this is impossible: an agent cannot ever resist her currently strongest desire. The paper argues that one prominent solution to this puzzle – the solution offered by Al Mele – faces a serious ‘mismatch problem’, which ultimately undermines its (...) plausibility. It is furthermore argued that this problem can be avoided if we adopt a ‘divided mind’ solution instead. (shrink)

A significant voice in encouraging the theoretical development and practical implementation of humanistic management is Pope Benedict XVI. In his Encyclical Letter Caritas in Veritate, published in 2009, he proposed a new humanistic synthesis to realign the economy with its social purpose. The aim of this book is to interpret, comment, and develop aspects of this Encyclical Letter which are significant for economic and business activity and contribute to humanistic management. Teleological explanations of human actions are explanations in terms of aims, goals, or purposes of human agents. According to a familiar causal approach to analyzing and explaining human action, our actions are, essentially, events (and sometimes states, perhaps) that are suitably caused by appropriate mental items, or neural realizations of those items. Causalists traditionally appeal, in part, to such goal-representing states as desires and intentions (or their neural realizers) in their explanations of human actions, and they take accept-able teleological explanations (...) of our actions to be causal explanations. Some proponents of the view that human actions are explained teleologically resist this. They regard the causal approach as a rival. I dub this position “anticausalist teleologism,” or AT, for short. I favor the causal approach, but I will not directly argue for it here. My aim is more modest. I will develop a serious problem for AT that strongly suggests that teleologists need causalism; and I will rebut a style of objection to the project of providing a causal analysis of acting in pursuit of a goal that recently resurfaced in the literature on teleological explanations of action, a style of objection featuring a certain kind of causal deviance. Studies designed to help us understand how nonspecialists conceive of intentional action have generated some widely discussed results. To what extent are the results accounted for by the existence of different folk conceptions of intentional action? That is my guiding question in this article. I am not in a position to offer a full answer, but I do hope to make some progress.

Although much human action serves as proof that irrational behavior is remarkably common, certain forms of irrationality--most notably, incontinent action and self-deception--pose such difficult theoretical problems that philosophers have rejected them as logically or psychologically impossible. Here, Mele shows that, and how, incontinent action and self-deception are indeed possible. Drawing upon recent experimental work in the psychology of action and inference, he advances naturalized explanations of akratic action and self-deception while resolving the paradoxes around which the philosophical literature revolves. In addition, he defends an account of self-control, argues that "strict" akratic action is an insurmountable obstacle for traditional belief-desire models of action-explanation, and explains how a considerably modified model accommodates action of this sort. Whereas some philosophers view all reasons for action as psychological states of agents, others—objective favourers theorists—locate the overwhelming majority of reasons for action outside the agent, in items that objectively favour courses of action. (The latter may count such psychological states as a person's belief that demons dance in his kitchen as a reason for him to seek psychiatric help.) This article explores options that objective favourers theorists have regarding cases in which, owing significantly to a false belief, an agent (...) performs an action for which there is no objective favourer. Topics addressed include whether such theorists, including Jonathan Dancy himself, should accept Dancy's thesis that 'intentional, deliberate, purposeful action is always done for a reason' and whether there are two different concepts of reasons for action, one geared to action-evaluation and the other to action-explanation. This chapter is a commentary on the others, concentrating on themes that link many of them. It provides conceptual background on free will, distinguishes among distinct philosophical positions on the topic (including compatibilist and incompatibilist positions), discusses determinism and laws of nature, connects free will to consciousness, critically examines Benjamin Libet's work on free will and consciousness, and considers the light that Daniel Wegner's contribution to the volume sheds on the “the illusion of conscious will” and free will.

I will argue that some changes of mind about what it is best to do are akratic occurrences and that the associated overt actions are derivatively akratic, and I will explain how akratic episodes of this kind are possible. Even if Socrates is mistaken in denying the reality of strict akratic action, he has identified an important phenomenon that deserves more attention than it has received.

This critical examination of Roderick Chisholm's agent causal brand of libertarianism develops a problem about luck that undermines his earlier and later libertarian views on free will and moral responsibility and defends the thesis that a modest libertarian alternative considerably softens the problem. The alternative calls for an indeterministic connection in the action-producing process that is further removed from action than Chisholm demands. The article also explores the implications of a relatively new variant of a Frankfurt-style case for Chisholm's views (...) of free will and moral responsibility and for libertarianism in general. It is suggested that Chisholm's efforts will and should continue to offer important assistance to libertarians who are determined to succeed where he apparently fell short. (shrink)

What are the criteria people use when they judge that other people did something intentionally? This question has motivated a large and growing literature both in philosophy and in psychology. It has become a topic of particular concern to the nascent field of experimental philosophy, which uses empirical techniques to understand folk concepts. We present new data that hint at some of the underly- ing psychological complexities of folk ascriptions of intentional action and at dis- tinctions both between diverse concepts (...) and between associated mechanisms. Corporations that provide services such as water, sewage disposal and electricity in poor countries or deprived areas face political, social and economic problems that make it difficult to simultaneously favor the interests of shareholders and other relevant stakeholders. In this paper a case study is presented in which a company, Aguas Argentinas, promoted innovative and participative multistakeholder involvement that produced benefits for all parties. Key factors in the model employed were the generation of credibility and trust, adaptive management to the (...) specific situation of deprived areas, stakeholder dialogue, and participation. It is argued that understanding corporate citizenship as reciprocity and common effort in solving interdependent problems were fundamental to the success of the company in this case. (shrink)

Les concepts de paradigme et de thématisation, par lesquels Jean Cavaillès décrit dans l’ouvrage posthume Sur la Logique et la théorie de la science la dynamique de l’activité mathématique, trouvent dans la théorie des catégories à la fois une illustration et une formalisation, et dans la dialectique hégélienne un précédent. Humanism in business is not only an alternative to economism but a way to human excellence. Humanism presented here revolves around the rich notion of “human person”, keystone of modern personalist philosophy and Catholic Social Teaching. From this perspective this book is offered to everyone, believer and nonbeliever alike. The person-centered humanism considers the human-wholeness, individual and relational, with subjectivity, self-determination, openness to transcendence, and with capacity not only to possess but also to give. It also highlights the uniqueness of (...) each person, endowed with a high constitutive dignity and in continuous process of flourishing toward human plenitude. An attitude of respect and good will is due to non-personal beings, while persons deserve to be treated with justice and even with love of benevolence. The book is prepared in dialogue with mainstream of thought in business and business ethics and focused on exploring ways to improve some conventional views. It includes some proposals such as a person-based ethics, ethics understood as intrinsic to business activity, the consideration of the company as an organized community of persons, and the purpose of the company oriented toward the common good through a double mission, internal and external. Humean compatibilism is the combination of a Humean position on laws of nature and the thesis that free will is compatible with determinism. This article's aim is to situate Humean compatibilism in the current debate among libertarians, traditional compatibilists, and semicompatibilists about free will. We argue that a Humean about laws can hold that there is a sense in which the laws of nature are 'up to us' and hence that the leading style of argument for incompatibilism?the consequence argument?has a (...) false premiss. We also display some striking similarities between Humean compatibilism and libertarianism, an incompatibilist view. For example, standard libertarians face a problem about luck, and we show that Humean compatibilists face a very similar problem. (shrink)

Common sense and philosophical tradition agree that mind makes a difference. What we do depends not only on how our bodies are put together, but also on what we think.
