In present cultural debate, the theme of biodiversity is considered one of the most important topic because it does not treat only the variety of living forms but it includes also the value of itself and its preservation. Analysing a lot of its peculiar aspects we take conscious about uniqueness of life and relationship with other fields of knowledge: science, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, politics. This essay focus especially on the origin of life, the processes of morphogenesis in living forms and (...) appearing of “aesthetics” qualities in biological world. The relation between biodiversity and aesthetic can help to understand the origin of human aesthetic sense. (shrink)

Il principale scopo di questo articolo è esplorare la legittimità e le implicazioni dell’ascrizione di valore intrinseco alla biodiversità. Svariati problemi ambientali stanno seriamente mettendo in crisi l’idea tradizionale secondo la quale la comunità morale dovrebbe essere ristretta ai soli esseri umani. In tale contesto, la ricerca filosofica è chiamata a una stimolante quanto urgente analisi della nozione di “biodiversità”. Tuttavia, alcuni eticisti ambientali continuano ad affermare che la biodiversità non abbia valore intrinseco. In questo contributo mostro (...) che il concetto di “valore intrinseco” ha diversi significati, a seconda che le sue basi siano epistemologiche, ontologiche, assiologiche o normative. Sostengo dunque che, mentre la biodiversità non ha valore di per sé (in its own right), in sé (in itself), o per sé (for its own sake), può esser considerata avere un valore in quanto tale (as such). Sostengo inoltre che ascrivere un valore intrinseco alla biodiversità permette una riconciliazione autentica tra gli interessi antropocentrici e il bisogno di estendere la comunità morale oltre l’umanità. La spettacolare invasione della parola “biodiversità” nelle sfere scientifiche e politiche così come nei media ha suggerito la possibile nascita di un nuovo campo d’indagine scientifica. Tuttavia, la diversità del mondo vivente è stata l’oggetto di studio della storia naturale sin dai primordi. Gli ecologi non hanno aspettato la pubblicazione di “Biodiversity” di Wilson e Peter, nel 1988, per prendere in esame la diversità delle specie all’interno degli ecosistemi e per occuparsi di questioni fondamentali come i processi di diversificazione (...) e il significato funzionale della diversità specifica. L’analisi degli articoli pubblicati a partire dagli anni Quaranta, fino al 1988, ci permette di comprendere di quali argomenti, relativi al tema della diversità, si sono occupati gli ecologi, e come le intuizioni, gli approcci teorici e la ricerca empirica abbiano interagito. La domanda che si pone è: l’invenzione della biodiversità ha promosso la ricerca? Uno sguardo alle pubblicazioni post-1988 consente di suggerire una risposta. (shrink)

Nel quadro dell’evoluzionismo darwiniano, l’articolo offre una riflessione scientifico-filosofica intorno alle dinamiche relazionali esibite dai viventi. Dopo aver riconosciuto l’estinzione come fatto ricorrente nella storia della vita e posto l’accento sul possibile ruolo umano in una prossima massiccia perdita di biodiversità, si elaborano le basi per una proposta normativa che consenta di evitare tale minaccia. L’argomentazione muove da un’indagine sulla natura profonda degli ecosistemi: in particolare si sottolinea la centralità della dimensione relazionale, e dunque della dipendenza, in quanto modalità (...) primaria della vita. Viene così ad emergere un concetto inedito di identità che, inteso nel suo specifico valore ecologico, può rappresentare per l’essere umano il punto di partenza ai fini dello sviluppo di una condotta moralmente ed ecologicamente più consapevole. In questo contributo di introduzione al volume “Biodiversity” (Rivista di Estetica n. 59, 2015), dopo aver sottolineato il legame tra la realizzazione degli inventari biologici (le tassonomie) e lo studio della biodiversità, e la difficoltà di definire la biodiversità, prendo in esame tre diversi modi di intendere il valore della biodiversità. Oltre al valore etico ed estetico, oggetto rispettivamente di discipline relativamente recenti come l’etica ambientale e l’estetica ambientale, la biodiversità ha un valore economico, presente soprattutto (...) nel cosiddetto approccio dei servizi ecosistemici, dove la biodiversità è principalmente intesa nei termini dei servizi che gli ecosistemi possono offrire agli esseri umani presenti e futuri. Die Diversität von Nahrungspflanzen, ein Ergebnis Jahrtausende langer Zuchtbemühungen, ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten dramatisch zurückgegangen. Schätzungen zufolge machen von den über 7000 Nahrungspflanzenarten ganze 103 Sorten 90% der Nahrungsmittelproduktion aus. Dieser Verlust könnte in Zukunft gewaltige negative Auswirkungen auf die Nahrungsmittelsicherheit haben, da die Biodiversität eine zentrale Rolle bei der Absorbierung biotischer und abiotischer Stressfaktoren spielt, die auf die Pflanzen wirken. Darüber hinaus stellt der Verlust eine bedeutende Verarmung nicht nur des Pools genetischer Ressourcen dar, die zukünftigen Generationen zur (...) Verfügung stehen, sondern auch der kulturellen Diversität, indem die Nahrungsmittelvielfalt der Landesküchen eingeschränkt und sowohl Kulturlandschaften als auch Stadtgärten vereinheitlicht werden. Wegen der grundlegenden Funktion, die die Agrobiodiversität in der menschlichen Gesellschaft erfüllt, werden wir im Folgenden verschiedene Schwierigkeiten bei der Pflege der Agrobiodiversität als ein gemeinsames Erbe der Menschheit in einer stark ungleichen Welt erörtern. Zuvor jedoch möchten wir untersuchen, was Agrobiodiversität eigentlich ist und welche Funktion sie für das menschliche Wohlbefinden erfüllt. Ziel dieses Artikels ist zu zeigen, inwieweit sich verschiedene Anreizsysteme unterschiedlich auf den Erhalt von Agrobiodiversität auswirken. (shrink)

In the last decade, awareness has grown that global warming, overpopulation and the destruction of natural habitats are destroying biodiversity. The consequences of this phenomenon have also been extensively discussed in the literature, from vulnerability to natural disasters to the availability and quality of food and water resources. Less attention has been paid to another phenomenon of no less shocking significance for our lives: the loss of cultural diversity which is affecting the human sphere, including the ways of living and (...) thinking, the languages and visions of the world, the knowledge and the traditions. This essay documents this phenomenon and considers its negative effects on the preservation of the heritage of traditions and on the expansion of opportunities for innovation. -/- ABSTRACT (ITA) Nell’ultimo decennio è cresciuta la consapevolezza che il riscaldamento globale, la sovrappopolazione e la distruzione degli habitat naturali stanno distruggendo la biodiversità. Sono state anche ampiamente discusse in letteratura le conseguenze di questo fenomeno, dalla vulnerabilità ai disastri naturali, sino alla disponibilità e alla qualità delle risorse alimentari e idriche. Minore attenzione è stata riservata a un altro fenomeno di portata non meno sconvolgente per le nostre vite: la perdita di diversità culturale che riguarda la sfera umana, comprendendo i modi di vivere e di pensare, i linguaggi e le visioni del mondo, ma anche le conoscenze e le tradizioni, nonché le specificità locali. In questo articolo si documenta questo fenomeno e se ne indicano i riflessi negativi sulla conservazione del patrimonio delle tradizioni e sull’ampiamento delle opportunità di innovazione. (shrink)

I am first going to develop a sort of cartography of the different meanings and usages of “biodiversity”, which will emphasize a few leitmotives. Next, to introduce some of these leitmotives, I will highlight two or three important elements in the process through which the term came to form a decisive role both for scientists from different fields linked to ecology, and the politicians or lawyers involved with the policies that govern the consequences of human actions on nature. In the (...) conclusion, I suggest that, in the same way as cognition is now seen as “situated cognition” because the agent is not detached from the world where its cognition takes place and has effect, biodiversity is something like a “situated concept”, a concept that does not get its legitimacy from models, theoretical elaborations and empirical data, but from the realization that something is altered in the biological world as such. According to the evolutionary theory, biodiversity is the product of change. However, biodiversity exists also because there are rules against an uncontrolled mixing of individuals or species that would create monsters such as the mythical chimera or the hybrids between lion and tiger. Unease in front of them is not necessarily proportional to the extent of the mixing. We fear most that the consequences of the breakup of a natural boundary may become lasting and uncontrollable. Boundaries, however, work also in (...) different way. First, you should not eat another member of your species. Second, individuality should not been breached by grafting together two individuals of the same species. Third, your enemy should not cross your skin unseen, to feed on you from inside. All these rules, however, are widely breached in nature. Humans have added to this catalogue, challenging borders by a diversity of practices that do not respect the boundaries within and between the species. All these practices are the ultimate treat – material and cultural alike – to the survival of biodiversity. (shrink)

L’origine della pandemia da COVID-19 è da attribuire alla devastazione e distruzione del pianeta causata dai nostri esasperati consumi e stili di vita. Infatti è dalla rivoluzione industriale in poi che noi, sapiens sapiens, abbiamo devastato più dei 2/3 della superfice terrestre per processi di industrializzazione, urbanizzazione e produzione agricola. Non solo, abbiamo deforestato l’equivalente della superficie del continente africano per l’allevamento intensivo di bovini e la produzione di carne rossa.Tutto ciò ha ampliato a dismisura disuguaglianze ed ingiustizie sociali ed (...) ambientali. Il rapporto di Sir Partha Dasgupta e lo studio dell’opera di Gilbert Simodon, che qui commentiamo, sono un prezioso aiuto per responsabilizzarci sulla gravità della ‘questione ecologica’. Ci stiamo comportando da buoni antenati? E, soprattutto, che tipo di pianeta lasceremo alle generazioni a venire? (shrink)

After wondering why environmental aestheticians tend to undervalue biodiversity as an indicator of nature’s well-being, I discovered that Philosophy and Science are in a face off regarding biodiversity’s utility. For the most part, philosophers meet science’s confidence regarding biodiversity with skepticism. Rather than get bogged down in technical disagreements between scientists and philosophers over the possibility of measuring and utilizing biodiversity, this paper sidesteps that conflict by turning to the relationship between biodiversity and cultural engagement. By describing: the link between (...) spoken languages and species diversity, the significance of cultural differences, the role of cities and remote communities in encouraging and safeguarding biodiverse habitats, and the heterogeneous nature of difference itself when determining biodiversity; I effectively demonstrate how human beings who value their own culture protect nature, which reveals the most important reason to value biodiversity. Biodiversity may be impossible to track, extremely difficult to measure, and shares no correlation with stability, yet no other yardstick indicates cultural proliferation. This paper surveys three ways in which biodiversity can serve as a bio-indicator for human cultural engagement, just as lichens are bio-indicators for air pollution, ozone depletion, and metal contamination.
