Levinas and the Unnamed Balaam on Ontology and Idolatry.Annabel Herzog - 2011 - Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy 19 (2):131-145.
Levinas establishes an intriguing connection between idolatry and ontology. This connection is aptly illustrated by the biblical character of Balaam, the ambiguous Mesopotamian prophet or sorcerer of Numbers 22-24, who is almost never mentioned in Levinas's work but who is present, albeit hidden, in the talmudic reading “Contempt for the Torah as Idolatry.“ A deconstruction of this talmudic reading uncovers Balaam's footprints. It also clarifies different meanings of idolatry—exposing its ontological violence, but also, perhaps, its necessity for ethics (...)

“Am I Able to Say Just Anything?”: Learning Faithful Exegesis from Balaam.Jacqueline Lapsley - 2006 - Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology 60 (1):22-31.
With considerable struggle, Balaam learns what it means to engage in faithful exegesis. It means shedding the human tendency to interpret in service to our own interests, and it means exegeting in the context of God's overarching purposes for Israel and for the world.

The ‘wonderful’ donkey – Of real and fabled donkeys.Hendrik Viviers - 2019 - HTS Theological Studies 75 (3).
An ethological appreciation of the donkey has confirmed that it is a special and unique animal. The donkey is a well-adapted, sensitive, sociable, intelligent and notably loyal animal. Their so-called ‘stubbornness’ points rather to a species-specific intelligence to survive. Because of their domestication, they have been incorporated into the human world, mostly as pack, draught and riding animals. In the Ancient Near East they sometimes also acted as ‘divine agents’, for example, in Balaam’s fable. An ecological hermeneutic focus on (...)
