The present article wishes to give a survey of the debate that took place in Rome at the end of the 1950’s and the beginning of the 1960’s. Against the background of the preparations for the Second Vatican Council, a fierce dispute arose between staff members of the Pontifical Lateran University on the one hand, and those belonging to the Pontifical Biblical Institute on the other. The issue at stake was whether or not critical historical readings of the Sacred Scriptures (...) could be accepted, combined with, or integrated in a theological approach of these same scriptures. The crisis thus took up questions that were already addressed in the modernist controversy, thereby adapting an old struggle to a new context. It is therefore referred to as the ‘neo-modernist crisis’. (shrink)

El artículo trata de la importancia de Rm 5, 12 para san Agustín. Presta atención a su desarrollo inicial de la doctrina del pecado original. Además examina cómo esta doctrina se convirtió en tema de un candente debate en los siglos XVI y XVII, especialmente al explicar la relación entre naturaleza y gracia, dentro de la controversia bayanista. Presenta también las explicaciones que reviven este mismo tema en la primera mitad del siglo XX.

This article deals with the importance of the text of Rm 5, 12 for S. Augustine and his initial development of the doctrine of original sin. It examines the way in which this doctrine, based upon Augustines reading of Paul’s verse, became subject to hotheaded debate in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially for the discussion on the relationship between nature and grace, within the baianist controversy. In this contribution, the author investigates the often heard claim that John Henry Newman influenced the teachings of Vatican II. The focus lies on the conciliar opening toward ecumenical dialogue, and the way in which Newman’s ideas have been received by an intermediary generation of theologians, who in turn brought them to the conciliar hall. In particular, this article illustrates how Newman’s legacy was received in French-speaking European milieus of the first half of the twentieth century. In order to do (...) so, the author studies the way in which Louis Bouyer, Yves Congar and Johannes Willebrands shared a common interest in Newman’s theological heritage, and how the presence of all three of these theologians in the Catholic Conference on Ecumenical Questions served as a gateway to Vatican II’s ecumenical turn. L’accent est mis sur l’ouverture conciliaire au dialogue oecuménique, et sur la façon dont les idées de Newman ont été accueillies par une génération intermédiaire de théologiens, qui à leur tour les ont amenées dans la salle conciliaire. Cet article illustre notamment comment l’héritage de Newman a été reçu dans les milieux européens francophones de la première (...) moitié du xxe siècle.
