A Ḥāshiya of Mashāriq al-Anwār in the Ottoman Empire: Darwīsh ‘Ali b. Muhammad's Anwār al-Mashāriq.Gülsüm Korkmazer - 2023 - Sakarya Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi 25 (47):121-152.
Sagānî's Mashāriq al-Anwār is one of the most used sources about the science of hadith in the Ottoman Empire. This work reinforced its authority with the commentaries of Ibn Melek and Ekmeleddin Bāberti. Many studies have been done about Mashāriq and its commentaries in the Ottoman Empire. Most of them are in manuscript form, and some do not even have introductory information. One of these works, about which there is no study, is Darwīsh Ali's Anwār a'l-Mashāriq. The work is a (...)

    Mâtürîdî-Hanefî Aidiyetin Osmanlı’daki İzdüşümleri = Projections of Māturīdite-Ḥanafite Identity on the Ottomans.Mehmet Kalaycı - 2016 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 20 (2):9-70.
Māturīdism is an Ottoman identity and this identity was not limited, as is commonly believed, to the last period of the Empire. It maintained its formal existence throughout the Ottoman history. Nevertheless, the context in which the Māturīdism was located or with which it was associated changed in the course of time. In the early period when the eclectic way of thinking was dominant, Māturīdism as a creed was apparent mainly in the jurists whose ascetic identity was prominent and partly (...)

Tafsīr Education and Works in the Mamluks: A Historical Review.Mesut Kaya - 2020 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 24 (3):993-1015.
The Mamluk period of Islamic history witnessed a very vivid life of scientific endeavours. This was mainly due to the fact that the higher education institutions (madrasa) established by the Seljuqid and Ayyubid dynasties continued to develop as well as that Mamluk sultans and their commanders gave great importance to charitable institutions of education. With the facilities provided by these charities, Cairo and Damascus grew into important centres of attraction for scholars and teachers from all over the Islamic world. In (...)

The Contributions of Baghdādīzāda and Arpacīzāda to the Complete Cause Discussions of the Mutakhkhirīn Period: The Effect of Absolute Existence on the First Principle's Being a Simple Complete Cause.Zeynelabidin Hüseyni̇ - 2023 - Kader 21 (2):511-533.
Although different perspectives on the essence and qualities of the absolute existence have been put forward by the philosophers, theologians, and Sufī philosophers, in the context of this article, we will examine whether absolute existence has a causal efficacy in addition to special existence in the unity of the First Principle and the first effect. We will discuss the views of two Ottoman scholars, Baghdādīzāda (who lived in the second part of the 10th/16th century) and Arpacīzāda (d.1033/1623), who analyzed the (...)

A Critical Edition of the “Ĥāshıya ‘alā Muqaddımāt al-Arba‘a” of Muśliĥu’d-Dīn al-Kastalī and an Analytical Interpretation of the Work.Mustafa Bilal ÖZTÜRK - 2020 - Kader 18 (2):666-724.
The text of “The Four Premises” (Muqaddimāt al-Arba‘a), which began with Sadr al-Sharī‘ah (d. 747/1346), centralizes on the actions of human beings by connecting it with the problem of good and evil in the field of kalām, Islamic philosophy and logic, and fıqh. It was also commented in with incisive and critical footness by Sa‘d al-Dīn al-Taftāzānī (d. 791/1390). In Ĥāshiya ‘alā Muqaddimāt al-Arba‘a, al-Kastalī (d. 901/1496) discusses the two main issues. One of them is good/husn-evil/qubh, the other is human (...)

Critiques in the Margins: Contextualizing Mughulṭāy b. Qilīj’s (d. 762/1361) Gloss on the Sīra.Güllü Yıldız - 2023 - Journal of Islamic Philosophy 14:220-258.
This article examines Mughulṭāy b. Qilīj’s (d. 762/1361) al-Zahr al-bāsim fī siyar Abī al-Qāsim, a ḥāshiya (gloss, marginal notes) on ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Suhaylī’s (d. 581/1185) commentary on Ibn Isḥāq’s Sīra. Drawing on evidence from Mamlūk-era chronicles, biographical dictionaries, and commentarial introductions, it analyzes Mughulṭāy b. Qilīj as a historical figure and the context and content of his work. This is done in order to demonstrate how commentaries and glosses are deeply related to the scholarly and cultural life of the period. (...)

    Hacı Hasanz'de’nin Mukaddim't-ı Erbaa H'şiyesinin Tahkiki.Mustafa Bilal ÖZTÜRK - 2021 - Tasavvur - Tekirdag Theology Journal 7 (1):893-953.
There is no common working style followed in the preparation of the editorial critiques of the ĥāshiya. The overwhelming majority of the ĥāshiya works written on at least one text and commentary, were produced in the Ottoman science-culture basin and period. Ĥāshiya style of writing is an area neglected by the academic community until recently. A claimant is obliged to prove his claim by scientific, legal and moral principles. However, studies that prove or at least support the said judgment have (...)
