An Epistemic Defeater for the Asharite Metaethical Theory.Nader Alsamaani - 2022 - Res Philosophica 99 (1):25-38.
In this article, I develop two arguments against the Asharite metaethical theory concerning God’s actions. First, I purport that the probability of God’s revelation being true given that the Asharite metaethical theory obtains is low. However, as some Asharites might point out, the probability increases by considering other items from the Asharite theology, which ultimately renders the first argument flawed. I further argue that the probability of our cognitive faculties being reliable given the Asharite metaethical theory concerning God’s action being (...)

    Ash'arism encounters Avicennism: Sayf al-Dīn al-Āmidī on creation.Laura Hassan - 2020 - Piscataway: Gorgias Press LLC.
This study of Sayf al-Dīn al-Āmidī's (d. 631/1233) teachings on creation offers close analysis of all of his extant works of falsafa and kalām. Some of these were not known to previous scholars, yet they bear witness to key facets of the interaction between the historically inimical traditions of Hellenic philosophy and rational theology at this important intellectual moment. Al-Āmidīis seen to grapple with the encounter of two paradigms for the discussion of creation. On the one hand, Ibn Sīnā's metaphysical (...)

Describing Lawful Rule according to Khiṭāb of the God.Temel Kacir - 2018 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 22 (2):1221-1247.
The subject “rule”, which is one of the most fundamental issues of the Islamic legal theory (usūl al-fiqh), has been in the center of methodological debates. There is one important term in this regard, which should be studied very carefully: Khiṭāb(speech) of the God. It is because that, especially since the first period of Islam, it has been taken with some significant terms in the field of Kalāmsuch as Husn (pretty; good), Qubh (ugly; evil), and the quality of God’s talk. (...)

Human Acts in Islamic Thought: Different Discourses Common Purposes.Bilal Taşkin - 2021 - Kader 19 (1):146-176.
The subject of human acts has been one of the controversial topics of kalām since the first centuries of Islam. A lot of concerning human acts –from divine attributes to divine decree and destiny, from the issue of good and evil (ḥusn and Qubḥ) to the boundaries of the reasoning, from the accountability with impossible things to the rational accountability, from the topics of substance and accident to causality- has been said and written in the history of Islamic tought. In (...)

    Les actes de l’homme.Kristell Trego - 2013 - Laval Théologique et Philosophique 69 (2):295-308.
Kristell Trego | Résumé : Qui agit quand j’agis ? (...)

Determinism and Free Will in Alexander of Aphrodisias and the Arabic Tradition.Luis Xavier López-Farjeat - 2007 - Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association 81:161-177.
The Arabic tradition knew Alexander’s treatises On Fate and On Providence. Alexander criticizes the Stoic determinism with some peripatetic arguments. In those treatises we can find, at least, two positions: the peripatetic and “libertarian” position represented by Alexander, and Stoic determinism. A very similar discussion can be found in Islamic tradition. As S. Van den Bergh has insisted, Islamic theological schools had some Stoic influences. One of the issues in which we can find some common views is, precisely, the problem (...)

    Al-Ghazali'S Moral Psychology.Javadi M. Naji Z. & Mohsen Javadi - 2009 - Journal of Philosophical-Theological Research 11 (41):129-148.
This paper is going to re-read Imam Mohammad al-Ghazali’s moral ideas in order to find the responses to the questions of moral psychology. Al-Ghazali, following the Greek and Islamic philosophers, relates each virtue or vice to a particular faculty in man’s soul. Moreover, following the Asharites, he considers the basis of moral good and badness to be religious. Furthermore, having mentioned al-Ghazali and Hume’s opinions as well as their similarities, this writing explains why al-Ghazali’s view on the moral motivation has (...)

An Analysis of the Approaches to the Modality of Marifatullah (knowledge of God) in the Context of Human Psychological, Genetic and Neurobiological Nature.C. A. N. Seyithan - 2023 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 27 (2):349-368.
Discussions on the concept of Marifatullah as the foundation of belief hold a significant place in theology. There are different opinions among schools of theology regarding whether those who do not receive divine messages must know God. The majority of scholars belonging to the Mu'tazila and Māturīdī schools, including Imam Māturīdī, state that human beings must know God. Although al-Ashʿarī accepts that the most prominent obligatory duties are the methods of reasoning that lead to marifatullah, he states that responsibility in (...)

Although Ghazzali in his Tahafut al- falasifeh has strongly criticised peripatetic philosophers but in both the two theories that he has offered about the resurrection of the body is under the influence of Ibn Sina’s science of soul. In his Tahafut al- falasifeh, he introduces the theory of a new body as a possibility for the resurrection of the body which is based on being, immateriality and immortality of soul as well as acceptance of soul as a standard for the (...)
