Ernst Troeltsch's essay on socialism presents a summary account of his views on the prospects for a socialist economic order within the Weimar Republic. Troeltsch attempts to formulate a compromise that incorporates the proposals of both social conservatism and communism. Such a compromise, he insists, is possible on the basis of a realistic assessment of socialism supported by "an act of faith in the future" based upon explicitly religious resources. Ernst Troeltsch war für März 1923 eingeladen, als einer der ersten deutschen Gelehrten nach dem Weltkrieg in London, Oxford und Edinburgh Vorträge zu seinem Lebenswerk zu halten, starb jedoch kurz zuvor. Die postum veröffentlichten Texte der insgesamt fünf Einzelvorträge vermitteln Troeltschs Idee einer europäischen Kultursynthese im Anschluss an seine Studien zu Der Historismus und seine Probleme. Im Rahmen der Kritischen Gesamtausgabe wird in diesem Band erstmals das deutsche Original der Vorträge gemeinsam mit der englischen Übersetzung präsentiert. Das Erscheinen der englischen (...) Buchfassung noch in Troeltschs Todesjahr motivierte zur deutschen Ausgabe, in der die Texte in anderer Anordnung wiedergegeben sind. Die Geschichte der deutschen und englischen Doppelveröffentlichung liefert zugleich einen Einblick in den schwierigen deutsch-britischen Kulturtransfer in der Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg.
