Michael Psellos on literature and art: a Byzantine perspective on aesthetics.Michael Psellus - 2017 - Notre Dame, Indiana: University of Notre Dame Press. Edited by Charles Barber.
Michael Psellos has long been known as a key figure in the history of Byzantine literary and intellectual culture, but his theoretical and critical reflections on literature and art are little known outside of a small circle of specialists. Most famous for his Chronographia, a history of eleventh-century Byzantine emperors and their reigns, Psellos also excelled in describing as well as prescribing practices and rules for literary discourse and visual culture. The ambition of Michael Psellos on Literature and Art is (...)

When did Michael Psellus die? The evidence of the Dioptra.Apostolos Karpozilos - 2003 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 96 (2):671-677.
The last years of Michael Psellos' life are clouded in obscurity. He was certainly active at the court of his student Michael VII (1071–1078), but when Nikephoritzes, the logothetes tou dromou, became imperial advisor (Attaleiates, Historia, 200,12ff) he practically disappeared from the scene. One of the last chronological references found in his Chronographia is the death of Crispinus in 1075 (VII, b 39, 3–4). In that year he also wrote a description of the “usual miracle” which occurred regularly in the (...)

The Gods as Henads in Iamblichus.Dennis Clark - 2010 - International Journal of the Platonic Tradition 4 (1):54-74.
The origin of the Neoplatonist doctrine of the henads has been imputed to Iamblichus, mostly on indirect evidence found in later Neoplatonists, chiefly Proclus. Is there any trace of this concept to be found in the extant works or fragments of Iamblichus himself? The best candidates among his surviving texts are the excerpts in Psellus of his volume on Theological Arithmetic from his Pythagorean series, and the first book of de Mysteriis , where Iamblichus answers Porphyry's questions on the (...)

En búsqueda del paraíso caldaico.Álvaro Fernández Fernández - 2013 - 'Ilu. Revista de Ciencias de Las Religiones 18:57-94.
By drawing on what the ancient Greeks understood by παράδεισος, and reviewing different conceptions of the biblical paradise as portrayed in the New Testament, the Old and New Testament Apocrypha, the Nag Hammadi Library, the Manichean literature, the Koran, and other mystical sources of Islam, this paper seeks to determine the nature of the ‘paradise’ mentioned in the Chaldean Oracles (frs. 107 and 165). Particular attention is paid to the Christianized reading by the Byzantine scholar Michael Psellus, who arranged (...)

  27. La fortuna di Giovanni Pico della Mirandola nelle Disputationes Aristotelicae di Tommaso Giannini.Simone Fellina - 2018 - Noctua 5 (1):72-90.
Tommaso Giannini was a prominent professor at the ferrarese Studium between sixteenth and seventeenth century. Probably influenced by Platonic sympathies nurtured by the Court and partly by the University milieu, in 1587 he published his first work titled De providentia ad sententiam Platonis et Platonicorum liber unus, which was a catalyst for his academic career. A compilative work in essence, the De providentia displays a large amount of sources always tacitly used: Marsilio Ficino, Jacques Charpentier, Giulio Serina, Stefano Tiepolo, Teofilo (...)

Un trattato bizantino di omoplatoscopia (atheniensis, bibliotheca nationalis 1493, ff. 155v-159r).Salvatore Costanza - 2012 - Byzantion 82:57-78.
In the Late Byzantine period particular attention was paid to various kinds of foreseeing the future. That is why so many treatises on divination have been copied and transmitted to us – among other things the handbooks on divining from a lamb’s shoulder blade. This method originally goes back to a foreign tradition. We present the edition of an anonymous treatise in Ms. Atheniensis, Bibliotheca Nationalis 1493, which is ascribed to Turkish wisdom. We subsequently make a comparison with Psellus (...)

Byzantinischer Tanz zwischen antiker Rhythmik und neuzeitlichen Volkstänzen.Dietmar Najock - 2018 - Das Mittelalter 23 (2):383-408.
By tradition, Byzantine dance is linked with both classical antiquity and today’s folk dances of the southern Balkans. Turkish influence on the latter seems limited primarily to musical instruments and melody but does not appear to include rhythm. In antiquity, and in Byzantine times, the simple rhythmic foot was divided into arsis and thesis, the ‘up’ and ‘down’ of a step, and the ratio of their lengths determined the rhythmic genus, 1:1 dactylic, 2:1 iambic, 3:2 paeonic and 4:3 epitrite. This (...)
