Epigram AP XVI 275, by Posidippus, contains an ecphrasis of a statue created by the sculptor Lysippus that is an allegory of Kairos – not in expository form but rather in the form of a dialogue of questions and answers, with the aim of revealing the hidden meaning of its peculiar iconographic features. Lysippus’ statue and Posidippus’ epigram are the oldest testimonies existing in art and in the literary sources for Kairos, which was the subject of other descriptions and of (...) a rich iconography starting at the end of the Hellenistic age. They contain discrepancies in the selection of the features characterizing the concept, which possibly derive from a change in the meaning and the role of the allegory. The text provides an indication of the frequency with which certain abstractions were personified and deified in the Hellenistic age, sometimes to the point of becoming an object of worship. Parmi les épigrammes funéraires grecques consacrées aux enfants arrachés prématurément à la vie, plusieurs évoquent les jeux et les jouets de ces jeunes défunts. Si les garçons sont très présents dans ce corpus, quelques fillettes et jeunes filles ont également des activités ludiques. Cet article analyse trois textes en étudiant la dimension genrée de ces amusements et le discours sur l’enfance qu’ils livrent, tout en réévaluant nos définitions contemporaines du jouet appliquées aux mondes anciens. Notre étude porte sur l’inscription (...) du jeune thessalien Athénaios (tournant de notre ère), confrontée à deux épigrammes de l’Anthologie Palatine, l’une pour Myrô (VII 190, iiie s. av. Le trimètre ïambique gravé sur la base du Colosse fait simplement référence au fait, en soi remarquable, que cette base très lourde a été taillée dans le même marbre naxien que la statue : les dédicants tiennent à le rappeler parce que cette opération (travail en carrière et transport) représentait un supplément de dépense considérable, témoignage de leur piété envers le dieu. Un passage parallèle de Diodore de Sicile (I 47,3) vient à l'appui de cette interprétation.

Le genre épigrammatique est connu pour son potentiel comique mais également pour la dimension ludique qu’il peut mettre en place. Cette étude s’intéresse précisément à ces deux aspects et à leur mise en relation au sein des épigrammes à caractère sexuel d’Ausone et de Claudien afin d’observer les interactions entre ces trois dimensions (comique, ludique, sexualité) mais également pour délimiter les moyens et les bornes du comique et du ludique.

The paper presented here treats a hitherto unnoticed intertextual allusion in Mart. 5,7,7 to Verg. Aen. 8,394. Both lines contain two jokes at the expense of the smith-god Vulcan, by recalling the affairs of his wife Venus. First, the epic/epigrammatic speaker points to the well-known passage in Hom. Od. 8,266–363 in which Demodocus recounts the unpleasant – and for the other gods highly amusing – situation when Hephaestus caught his wife Aphrodite and her lover Ares in adultery with the help (...) of invisible fetters. The second ironic jab is presented by the epithet pater for Vulcan, who was – with his wife – childless; this term is often used of other male divinities, but not of Vulcan. The parallels to other authors, above all Homer and Ovid, have been widely discussed in research, but the intertextual play with Vergil has so far not been given the attention it deserves. The remarks offered here aim to show that Vergil intentionally constructed Aen. 8,394 to be comic. Martial correctly understood the comedy, picked it up and adopted it in his Epigram 5,7, thereby giving a parodic note to the panegyric of Domitian in the first half of the poem. (shrink)
