O que se segue é uma apresentação e a tradução de Das Ziel alles Lebens ist der Tod - Schopenhauer und Freuds Todestrieb, de Marcel Zentner, publicado em: RAINER, Specht. Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 1993, vol. 75, p. 319 – 340. Trata-se de um detalhamento dos problemas que envolvem o tópos criado por Freud de que, com seu dualismo dos instintos de vida e de morte, exposto em Além do princípio do prazer, “desaguara no porto (...) da filosofia de Schopenhauer”. As diferenças fundamentais desse dualismo com a dicotomia schopenhaueriana da afirmação e negação da Vontade merecem um esclarecimento pormenorizado – defende Zentner, para que não se perca de vista o fato de que a principal antecipação schopenhaueriana de Freud concerne, antes, ao complexo conceitual articulado em torno à primeira teoria dos instintos, a teoria da repressão e o “modelo estrutural da psique”. Propomos comparar as respostas de Schopenhauer e Freud à questão do significado do prazer e desprazer, dadas por eles, respectivamente, em A ordem da salvação (W II) e Além do princípio do prazer. Ambos lhe respondem concordantemente, pois assinalam que a conduta humana ou os processos psíquicos se dilatam entre a busca do prazer e a fuga da dor (em Schopenhauer, a partir da afirmação da Vontade, e em Freud, conforme o princípio de prazer), e a busca da dor e (...) fuga do prazer (em Schopenhauer, no ascetismo ou graças ao “destino”, conduzido pela Vontade inconsciente, e em Freud, a partir da compulsão à repetição). Mesmo que na contradição schopenhaueriana se expresse mais uma polaridade entre o intelecto e a Vontade, e na freudiana, duas tendências subordinadas ao instinto de morte, defenderemos que ambos os autores estão mais afinados nesse tema do que no do dualismo entre Morte e Eros. We comment here one of the most categorical, radical and fundamental concepts of Schopenhauer’s pessimism: the theory of positivity of pain and negativity of pleasure. We present its development in the philosopher’s capital work The World as Will and Representation and defend that it is present in a vital way in his three metaphysics, but is only made explicit in the last (of customs). Finally, we “dialogue” with the problematical issues that G. Simmel and C. Janaway address this argument and (...) propose a possible explanation of the thinker’s strategy to reserve its notability to the last book. (shrink)

Nós nos propomos analisar e interpretar em que sentido a descrição de Philonenko de que Schopenhauer desenvolveu uma “fenomenologia da vida ética” pode ser lida sem grandes problemas, se nos detivermos à sua fundamentação empírica da moral, exposta em Sobre o Fundamento da Moral. Caso a estendamos à metafísica dos costumes do filósofo, como fez Philonenko, essa expressão já será inadequada pelo fato da última não ter por objeto nenhum fenômeno, mas o que se “esconde por trás deles, a coisa (...) em si mesma”. Esse esclarecimento também nos ajudará a evidenciar que Schopenhauer inovou cientificamente, na moral, ao reconduzir as ações humanas a três motivos fundamentais: o bem-estar próprio, alheio e o mal-estar alheio ; e ao explicar a possibilidade da segunda motivação como oriunda do sentimento da compaixão. ZusammenfassungDas juristische Konzept der Einwilligung nach Aufklärung ist im Respekt vor dem Selbstbestimmungsrecht begründet. Es entwickelte sich seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, gewann mit der rapiden Ausweitung der klinischen Forschung seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts mittels der Deklaration von Helsinki und seit 1972 in den USA als Konzept des informed consent erhebliche Bedeutung in der klinischen Forschung, nachfolgend auch in der klinischen Praxis. Die psychiatrische Forschung stieß bald auf das grundlegende ethische Problem, dass psychische Krankheiten die Einwilligungsfähigkeit und damit die (...) Voraussetzung jeder Forschungsteilnahme beeinträchtigen oder gar zerstören können. Versuche der Lösung dieses ethischen und juristischen Problems in den letzten 30 Jahren – von frühen, durch das Konzept angestoßenen Fragen über die Entwicklung von Verfahren zur Feststellung der Einwilligungsfähigkeit bis zu aktuellen Vorschlägen für Forschungs- bzw. Probandenverfügungen und Forschungsvollmachten – werden im Kontext ihrer gesellschaftlichen Resonanz wie auch der eigenen Erfahrung skizziert. Die Übersicht soll die zunehmende Differenzierung des Konzepts verdeutlichen; sie folgt der Auseinandersetzung mit Problemen, die sich aus der Umsetzung und Wirksamkeit des Konzepts in der Forschungspraxis ergaben, um das Selbstbestimmungsrecht der Probanden zu bewahren. Als Schlussfolgerung ergibt sich 1. Das juristische Konzept der Einwilligung nach Aufklärung wurde erst durch die Entwicklung klinischer Kriterien zur Erfassung der Einwilligungsfähigkeit praktikabel; im Forschungskontext ist die Feststellung der Einwilligungsfähigkeit unverzichtbar, da von ihr die Gültigkeit der Einwilligung abhängt. 2. Zu erkennen ist ein langsamer Wandel von der Erfüllung einer juristisch begründeten Pflicht des forschenden Psychiaters, den potentiellen Forschungsteilnehmer nach Aufklärung um seine Einwilligung zu bitten, hin zu einer stärkeren Patientenorientierung; sie anerkennt das Selbstbestimmungsrecht und bemüht sich, im Prozess der Aufklärung die Fähigkeit des Patienten zu optimieren, sich zu einer Forschungsteilnahme selbstbestimmt entscheiden zu können. Dabei wird die Einwilligungsfähigkeit anhand klinischer Kriterien bestimmbar. 3. Es wird bezweifelt, dass die jüngsten legislativen Bemühungen geeignet sind, die Selbstbestimmung bei Forschung ohne potentiellen individuellen Nutzen mit nicht-einwilligungsfähigen Probanden zu sichern; denn es ist fraglich, ob die vorverlegte, dann aber prinzipiell nur unspezifisch mögliche Aufklärung und die auf einen später spezifisch aufgeklärten Vertreter verlagerte Entscheidung praktisch ausreichend realisiert werden können; ethisch enthält diese kontroverse Einschränkung der Selbstbestimmung zumindest das Risiko, das Verhältnis zwischen Individualwohl und Gemeinwohl zu Ungunsten des Individuums zu verschieben. Nos propomos nesse artigo a contribuir à apreciação da assimilação de Schopenhauer da teoria das Ideias de Platão, por meio da comparação da interpretação schopenhaueriana dessa doutrina com sua exposição platônica. Para tanto, partiremos do roteiro de leitura da teoria das Ideias de Platão recomendado por Schopenhauer em suas preleções na Universidade de Berlim, e que destaca trechos de Filebo, A República e O Banquete. Após sua análise, defenderemos que Schopenhauer assume e ressignifica a distinção platônica entre o mundo como (...) protótipo e cópia, associando o primeiro às forças naturais fundamentais, e o segundo, aos fenômenos do princípio de razão suficiente. Mostraremos também que Schopenhauer espera “corrigir” [1] a “psicologia racional” de Platão, com o argumento de que “o conhecimento sem a intuição, que é intermediada pelo corpo, não possui estofo algum” [2], seguido da radicalização da teoria platônica de que o belo intuitivo facilita o conhecimento das Ideias. This article argues that a manuscript dated to the summer of 1927 by the editors of Bohr’s Collected Works was written a year earlier. The re-dating allows the conclusion that Bohr was well on his way to complementarity before his famous fight with Heisenberg over the uncertainty principle early in 1927. The literature that assumes that complementarity was Bohr’s response to Heisenberg is therefore in error. The editors of the Collected Works assigned the document the date of 1927 because it (...) refers to electron-diffraction experiments by Davisson and Germer, which were published in 1927. But as the article points out, Bohr and other leading physicists such as Max Born met Davisson in Britain in 1926 and discussed the experiments with him then. That demolished the basis of the earlier dating. Finally, the article argues that when the document takes its place between the Bohr–Kramers–Slater theory (1924) and the 1927 drafts of complementarity, everything falls neatly into place. (shrink)

Quand on s'interroge sur le type de catholicité ou d'universalité qui convient à l'Église à notre époque de mondialisation, il faut prendre pour objectif direct, non le seul profit de l'Église, mais le service de l'Évangile, et pour base de réflexion, non les structures institutionnelles, mais ce qui est déjà en train de germer dans les communautés chrétiennes. La perspective qui se dessine alors est d'ordre anthropologique et non simplement religieuse : la forme évangélique dont l'Église doit témoigner est (...) celle d'un vivre-ensemble fraternel, d'une capacité de relation ouverte à tous, d'un refus de toute exclusion, d'une ouverture à tout l'humain. Cette orientation permet d'esquisser des figures nouvelles d'ecclésialité, ordonnées au service du monde , disséminées dans la société , s'accommodant d'appartenances sélectives et provisoires, appelant un fonctionnement nouveau de l'Église locale et de l'autorité centrale. Ces figures sont à créer, l'Évangile le permet et y pousse ; au terme se laisse entrevoir une œcuménicité décentrée et immergée dans l'histoire des hommes. When we ask ourselves about the kind of catholicity or universality that is fitting for the Church in our age of globalization, we should take for our direct object, not the unique profit of the Church, but the service of the Gospel. And for a basis of reflection, not institutional structure, but that which is already being germinated in Christian communities. Then the perspective that is designed is of an anthropological dimension and not simply religions : the evangelical form that the Church should witness to is that of a fraternal living together, a capacity of relation open to everyone, a refusal of all exclusion, and an opening to all what is human. This orientation allows us to sketch new figures of ecclesiality, ordered to the service of the world , spread throughout society , accommodating itself to selective and provisional belongings, and calling for a new functioning of the local church and of central authority. These figures need to be created ; the Gospel allows for it and encourages it. One can foresee ecumenism as the result, decentralized and emerged in the history of humanity. (shrink)

One of the human dynamics that spiritual formation must address is the set of messages that play over and over in our minds. This self-talk or personal commentary frames our reactions to life and its circumstances and shapes how we relate to God and others. Often, the pattern of self-talk that we employ is negative, and in the past decade Christopher Germer and Kristin Neff have developed a series of self-compassion exercises designed to dispute this negative thinking. Their research (...) and program of Mindful Self-Compassion have been widely reported in the mainstream media and are marketed as being secular and religiously neutral. This article explores ways in which self-compassion practices can be used as a Christian spiritual practice. This article also examines some of the implicit theological assumptions in what is presented as a religiously neutral program and considers how Christians, from a spiritual formation standpoint, might view both self-critical self-talk and its remediation through the practice of self-compassion. ArgumentThe discovery of electron diffraction by George Paget Thomson in Aberdeen and Clinton J. Davisson and Lester H. Germer at the Bell Labs has often been portrayed as an example of independent discovery. Neither team was particularly interested in the developments of the nascent quantum theory but they both ended up demonstrating one of the most striking experimental consequences of the new physics. This paper traces the aftermath of this discovery and the way electron diffraction immediately turned from empirical (...) evidence of a highly novel theory into a technique for applied and technological research. Thomson was the first to design an “electron diffraction camera,” an instrument that soon found its place in laboratories around the world. I discuss the role played by Davisson and Germer, and by Thomson in the development of electron diffraction as a “research technology,” taking into account their specific institutional settings and research cultures. While Davisson and Germer remained in the industry-oriented Bell Labs, Thomson moved to Imperial College in 1930 where collaboration first, and competition later with George I. Finch was also relevant for the consolidation of an instrument that eventually became widely known as the “Finch Camera.”. (shrink)
