Instruments of invention in Renaissance Europe: The cases of Conrad Gesner and Ulisse Aldrovandi.Fabian Kraemer & Helmut Zedelmaier - 2014 - Intellectual History Review 24 (3):321-341.
The measure of what can be considered “new” is what is already known. What is “new” – be it a (technical) invention, a new method, or a newly discovered natural phenomenon – must distinguish itself...

  8. Early Modern Information Overload.Daniel Rosenberg - 2003 - Journal of the History of Ideas 64 (1):1-9.
Contemporary discussions of information overload have important precedents during the years 1550-1750. An examination of the early modern period in Europe, including work of humanism, science, theology, and popular encyclopedias demonstrates that perceptions of information overload have as much to do with the ways in which knowledge is represented as with any quantitative measurers in the production of new texts, ideas, or facts. Key figures in this account include Francis Bacon, Conrard Gesner, Francesco Sacchini, Johann Heinrich Alsted, Casoar Bauhin, (...)

Protestant Hermeneutics and the Persistence of Moral Meanings in Early Modern Natural Histories.Andreas Blank - forthcoming - Perspectives on Science.
Peter Harrison explains the disappearance of symbolic meanings of animals from seventeenth-century works in natural history through what he calls the “literalist mentality of the reformers.” By contrast, the present article argues in favor of a different understanding of the connection between hermeneutics and Protestant natural history. Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Johannes Brenz, Johannes Oecolampadius, and Jean Calvin continued to assign moral meanings to natural particulars, and moral interpretations can still be found in the writings of Protestant naturalists such as (...)

In the (...)

    A kerosene summer dress.Graydon Wetzler - 2018 - Technoetic Arts 16 (3):247-258.
This article combines situational analysis with situationists dérive to weave a seemingly disjointed series of historical tableaux, materialities, marginalia, combustion and corporeal techniques in embryology, chemistry, geology, synthetics and magic. The double locus structuring this constellation is Hilde Proescholdt (1898–1924), a gifted German experimental biologist; and Abraham Gesner (1797–1864), Canadian physician, geologist and inventor of kerosene. Following Adele Clark’s SA research programme, I attend to situational maps recurring the experimental repertoires Gesner and Proescholdt with the material, social and (...)

George Gennadius II Scholarios and the West: Comments on Demetracopoulos, “George Scholarios’ Abridgment of the Parva naturalia”.John Monfasani - 2018 - In Börje Bydén & Filip Radovic (eds.), The Parva Naturalia in Greek, Arabic and Latin Aristotelianism: Supplementing the Science of the Soul. Cham: Springer Verlag. pp. 317-323.
The most striking aspect of Dr. Demetracopoulos’ contribution is the evidence for how unoriginal was Scholarios’ Aristotelian scholarship. The chief source of Scholarios’ commentary on the Parva naturalia was Theodore Metochites, whose ultimate source in turn was Michael of Ephesus. So once the Aldine Press had published the text of Michael of Ephesus’ commentary in 1527 and once Conrad Gesner’s Latin translation of Michael of Ephesus’s commentary was printed in 1541 and Gentian Hervet’s translation of Theodore Metochites’ commentary in (...)

    Macer's Villa — A Previous Owner: Pliny, Ep. 5. 18.A. Keaveney & John A. Madden - 1981 - Classical Quarterly 31 (02):396-.
At Pliny, Ep. 5. 18 we read that Macer, the recipient of that letter, has a villa which Pliny says must be lovely, because in qua [sc. villa] se composuerat homo felicior, antequam felicissimus fieret. The identity of this homo felicior is undoubtedly of some interest, but the latest commentary on Pliny's Letters has nothing to say on the matter. However, B. Radice in her two translations of the Letters says that the person in question is Nerva, but adds as (...)

"the Doctor Quarrels With Some Pictures": Exegesis And Animals In Thomas Browne's Pseudodoxia Epidemica.Kevin Killeen - 2007 - Early Science and Medicine 12 (1):1-27.
This essay explores Thomas Browne's Pseudodoxia epidemica, with its lengthy book on 'errors' in animal lore. In the limited critical literature on Browne's natural history, this author is generally seen as stumbling towards a zoological idiom and clearing away the emblematic 'clutter' of earlier writers on natural history—Gesner, Aldrovandi, Topsell or Franzius. This essay proposes that Browne is working with a more complex set of co-ordinates in his thought, beyond his experimental inclinations and his Aristotelian assumptions. It will explore (...)
