    Transcending inductive category formation in learning.Roger C. Schank, Gregg C. Collins & Lawrence E. Hunter - 1986 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 9 (4):639-651.
The inductive category formation framework, an influential set of theories of learning in psychology and artificial intelligence, is deeply flawed. In this framework a set of necessary and sufficient features is taken to define a category. Such definitions are not functionally justified, are not used by people, and are not inducible by a learning system. Inductive theories depend on having access to all and only relevant features, which is not only impossible but begs a key question in learning. The crucial (...)

    What's the Point?Roger C. Schank, Gregg C. Collins, Ernest Davis, Peter N. Johnson, Steve Lytinen & Brian J. Reiser - 1982 - Cognitive Science 6 (3):255-275.
We present a theory of conversation comprehension in which a line of the conversation is “understood” by relating it to one of seven possible “points”. We define these points, and present examples where it seems plausible that the failure to “get the point” would indeed constitute a failure to understand the conversation. We argue that the recognition of such points must proceed in both a top down and bottom up fashion, and thus is likely to be quite complicated. Finally, we (...)

Technics and Time, 1: The Fault of Epimetheus.Richard Beardsworth & George Collins (eds.) - 1998 - Stanford University Press.
What is a technical object? At the beginning of Western philosophy, Aristotle contrasted beings formed by nature, which had within themselves a beginning of movement and rest, and man-made objects, which did not have the source of their own production within themselves. This book, the first of three volumes, revises the Aristotelian argument and develops an innovative assessment whereby the technical object can be seen as having an essential, distinct temporality and dynamics of its own. The Aristotelian concept persisted, in (...)

    Burke's Enlightenment: Commerce, Virtue, and Civilization.Gregory M. Collins - 2020 - Cambridge University Press.
Although many of Edmund Burke's speeches and writings contain prominent economic dimensions, his economic thought seldom receives the attention it warrants. Commerce and Manners in Edmund Burke's Political Economy stands as the most comprehensive study to date of this fascinating subject. In addition to providing rigorous textual analysis, Collins unearths previously unpublished manuscripts and employs empirical data to paint a rich historical and theoretical context for Burke's economic beliefs. Collins integrates Burke's reflections on trade, taxation, and revenue within his understanding (...)

Spontaneous order and civilization: Burke and Hayek on markets, contracts and social order.Gregory M. Collins - 2021 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 48 (3):386-415.
Philosophy & Social Criticism, Volume 48, Issue 3, Page 386-415, March 2022. In light of a growing body of scholarship that has cast doubt on the analytic import of spontaneous order, the purpose of my article is to rethink the intellectual relationship between Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek by suggesting that reading spontaneous order into Burke’s thought introduces greater tensions between the two thinkers than prior scholars have suggested. One crucial tension, I suggest, is that Hayek believed that contractual arrangements, (...)

The rebuilding of psychology: an integration of psychology and Christianity.Gary R. Collins - 1977 - Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House.
Dr. Gary R. Collins provides an overview and evaluation of the field of contemporary psychology, and identifies the presuppositions that underlie this discipline. As a Christian, he looks beyond the dilemmas of modern psychology and sees hope -- for humanity and for "the science of human behavior." The Rebuilding of Psychology makes a bold proposal for rebuilding psychology on the theistic premise that "God exists and is the source of all truth." - Back cover.

The informed consent process is the legal embodiment of the fundamental right of the individual to make decisions affecting his or her health., and the patient’s permission is a crucial form of respect of freedom and dignity, it becomes extremely important to enhance the patient’s understanding and recall of the information given by the physician. This statement acquires additional weight when the medical treatment proposed can potentially be detrimental or even fatal. This is the case of thalassemia patients pertaining to (...)
