Ernst Jünger's book Der Arbeiter—"The worker"—would be a strong contender for the title of the most remarkable gap in the catalog of foreign works available in English translation. It came out many years ago in French, Spanish, and Italian, though even in these languages, Jünger hesitated a long time after its first German publication in 1932 before granting permission for a translation.1 Ernst Jünger himself would be an excellent contender for the most difficult author of international standing to (...) categorize and perhaps the most misrepresented ideologically. In 1885, Georg Cantor published his review of Gottlob Frege's Grundlagen der Arithmetik . In this essay, we provide its first English translation together with an introductory note. We also provide a translation of a note by Ernst Zermelo on Cantor's review, and a new translation of Frege's brief response to Cantor. In recent years, it has become philosophical folklore that Cantor's 1885 review of Frege's Grundlagen already contained a warning to Frege. This warning is said to concern the (...) defectiveness of Frege's notion of extension. The exact scope of such speculations varies and sometimes extends as far as crediting Cantor with an early hunch of the paradoxical nature of Frege's notion of extension. William Tait goes even further and deems Frege 'reckless' for having missed Cantor's explicit warning regarding the notion of extension. As such, Cantor's purported inkling would have predated the discovery of the Russell-Zermelo paradox by almost two decades. In our introductory essay, we discuss this alleged implicit (or even explicit) warning, separating two issues: first, whether the most natural reading of Cantor's criticism provides an indication that the notion of extension is defective; second, whether there are other ways of understanding Cantor that support such an interpretation and can serve as a precisification of Cantor's presumed warning. In einfachen Fragen und Antworten, ohne Fremdwörter, bietet das Buch eine gründliche Einführung in Kants Ethik, Religionsphilosophie und Erkenntnistheorie. Der Katechismus, 1978 faksimiliert, will, ebenfalls in Dialogform und vom Standpunkt Kants, auch diejenigen zur Vernunft bringen, die mit übersinnlichen Kräften und okkulten Praktiken umzugehen glauben. Der Mahnruf gibt die erste kenntnisreiche Darstellung von Leben (...) und Werk des Kantianers Ernst Marcus (1856-1928), zugleich eine unvermindert aktuelle Diagnose der Orientierungsprobleme unserer modernen Existenz. Une correspondance s’engagea alors entre Dingier et Marcus. Elle fut poursuivie, après la mort de ce dernier en 1928, par son ami Friedlaender/Mynona. Marcus était conscient que Dingier refusait l’apriorisme kantien, il le voyait malgré tout comme un allié. Friedlander/Mynona critiqua sévèrement l’ambivalence (...) de Dingier, en particulier ses tendances irrationalis­tes. La constellation de ces trois auteurs a été jusqu’ici ignorée par les cher­cheurs, à l’exception de H. Lütdtke [Lüdtke 1989] qui a édité la correspondance Marcus-Dingler. Cet article, qui rassemble tous les documents connus ainsi que des inédits, permet d’exemplifier le débat intemporel entre un volontarisme empiriste et opportuniste d’une part, l’idéalisme kantien d’autre part. The paper presents the project, begun in 2005, of publication of the Collected Works of Salomo Friedlaender / Mynona , a German philosopher and satirist. Starting from Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Goethe, Kant, and Ernst Marcus, Friedlaender developed the basic motives of „creative indifference” and the specific polarity into an original and penetrating philosophy. Living in Berlin from 1902, he was at the center of significant philosophical and literary developments of the 20th century . He was a determined pacifist and (...) Kantian whose popular satires , during the Frist World War and the Weimar Republic, formulated a severe critique of culture and convincingly suggested that the utopia of eternal peace was practical. Due to unvaforable circumstances and cruel fate he had undeservedly sunk into fatal oblivion. This edition, which will include 30 volumes over several years, finally shows him the way he deserves. Geschrieben 1936-38, am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs, mit furchtlosem Blick auf die Medusenhäupter der Diktaturen, eines Dritten Reiches, eines sowjetischen Kollektivismus, auch eines Papstes, ist dieser Aufruf zur Selbsterkenntnis der Macht der Vernunft, zur Autonomie des ICH nach fast 80 Jahren noch von geradezu unheimlicher Aktualität. In konstruktiver Auseinandersetzung mit Kant und Ernst Marcus entwirft Friedlaender/Mynona das „System der Immanenz“, der Erfahrung, des Lebens. Es gibt auch „eine intelligente Wut,“ sagt er, „einen weisen Zorn gegen Irrtum, Lug, Trug“ (...) und gegen eine Toleranz, die alles zuläßt, anstatt von klar begründeter Position aus allen Zweifel und Opportunismus scharf abzuweisen. Der Mensch, hatte er schon vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg erklärt, „hat ein wahrhaft kolossales Vertrauen zum,Tode’“ – „er ist das wahre Rindvieh des Todes.“ Der Philosoph korrigiert nur die Druckfehler im Buch des Lebens. L’article présente un projet d’édition des OEuvres complètes du philosophe et satiriste allemand Salomo Friedlaender Mynona , entrepris en 2005. Partant de Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Goethe, Kant et Ernst Marcuse, le philosophe a développé les raisons fondamentales de « l’indifférence créatrice » et d’une polarité spécifique non romantique vers une étude philosophique approfondie. Installé à Berlin à partir de 1902, Friedlaender se trouvait au coeur des courants philosophiques et littéraires du XXe siècle – l’expressionnisme et le dadaïsme. Pacifiste déterminé et (...) kantien à l’heure de la Première guerre mondiale et de la République de Weimar, il a formulé dans ses satires populaires, les grotesques, une critique sévère de la culture en attirant l’attention, avec insistance, sur l’utopie pratique de la paix éternelle. En raison des circonstances difficiles – émigration à Paris en 1933 – et d’un malheureux hasard, il est tombé dans l’oubli. Grâce à cette nouvelle édition, dans le cadre de laquelle devraient paraître trente volumes dans les années à venir, il sera présenté au public à sa juste valeur. (shrink)

Vorgestellt wird die im Jahre 2005 begonnene Ausgabe der Gesammelten Schriften des deutschen Philosophen und Satirikers Salomo Friedlaender/Mynona . Im Ausgang von Schopenhauer und Nietzsche, Goethe, Kant und Ernst Marcus entwickelte er die Grundmotive der ,schöpferischen Indifferenz’ und eines spezifischen Polarismus zu einer originalen und tiefen philosophischen Lehre. Seit 1902 in Berlin lebend, stand er im Zentrum maßgebender philosophischer und literarischer Entwicklungen des 20. Jahrhunderts ; er war ein entschiedener Pazifist und Kantianer, der zur Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges (...) und der Weimarer Republik auch in seinen populären Satiren scharfe Kulturkritik formulierte und nachdrücklich auf die praktische Utopie des ewigen Friedens hinwies. Durch widrige Umstände und böse Zufälle geriet er unverdienterweise in eine fatale Vergessenheit. Mit dieser Edition, deren etwa 30 Bände in den nächsten Jahren erscheinen sollen, wird er endlich in das Licht gebracht, das ihm gebührt. (shrink)

Salomo Friedlaender was a prolific German-Jewish philosopher, poet, and satirist. His Kant for Children is intended to help young people learn about Immanuel Kant’s philosophy. Friedlaender writes, “Morality is inherent in us organically. But its abstract formula should be imprinted on schoolchildren.” Published in 1924, 200 years after Kant’s birth, the book sparked interest in some quarters, attracting the attention of the first Newbery Award winner, Hendrik Willem van Loon, who corresponded with Friedlaender in 1933 requesting an English translation. That (...) didn’t happen. This is the first English translation of the book. During the National Socialist period, Kant for Children troubled the Nazis. They banned Friedlaender’s work. Rebecca Hanf, friend of Ernst Marcus, the philosopher who claimed to have resurrected Kant, recognized that Friedlaender’s Kant for Children could counter the Nazi appropriation of Kant and realign Kant with egalitarianism and anti-fascist politics, meaning the book has contemporary relevance in light of an international resurgence of fascism. A lifelong student of Kant’s works, Friedlaender deserves a wider audience among Kant scholars and students. This first English translation includes an introduction to Friedlaender as well as essays by Paul Mendes-Flohr, Sarah Holtman, Robert Louden, Kate Moran, Krista Thomason, and Jens Timmermann. For translating and editing Kant for Children, Bruce Krajewski received The 2023 Silvers Grant for Work in Progress from the Robert B. Silvers Foundation. The Robert B. Silvers Foundation is a charitable trust established by a bequest of the late Robert B. Silvers, a founding editor of the New York Review of Books, with the aim of supporting writers in the fields of long-form literary and arts criticism, the intellectual essay, political analysis, and social reportage.
