  33. Genealogical Undermining for Conspiracy Theories.Alexios Stamatiadis-Bréhier - 2023 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy:1-23.
In this paper I develop a genealogical approach for investigating and evaluating conspiracy theories. I argue that conspiracy theories with an epistemically problematic genealogy are (in virtue of that fact) epistemically undermined. I propose that a plausible type of candidate for such conspiracy theories involves what I call ‘second-order conspiracies’ (i.e. conspiracies that aim to create conspiracy theories). Then, I identify two examples involving such conspiracies: the antivaccination industry and the industry behind climate change denialism. After fleshing out the mechanisms (...)

    Plotinus and Posidonius.R. E. Witt - 1930 - Classical Quarterly 24 (3-4):198-.
Probably no philosopher of antiquity has occasioned more daring speculations and the expression of graver doubts than Posidonius. On the one hand it has been argued that he was purely a man of science and hardly a Stoic philosopher at all. On the other hand he has been called the first and greatest Stoic mystic who under Oriental influence spurned the body as vile and earthly. Reinhardt has of late years resolutely maintained that the importance of Posidonius in the history (...)

  47. Descartes: A Collection of Critical Essays. [REVIEW]A. R. E. - 1967 - Review of Metaphysics 21 (2):383-384.
Sixteen articles by fifteen authors, two of which, the ones by Plantinga and Kenny, have never appeared in this form before. Three of the selections have been translated for the first time from French: those by B. A. O. Williams, E. Bréhier, and P. H. J. Hoenen. The latter two selections are the sole representatives of French Cartesian scholarship. This is unfortunate, as Descartes' positive contribution to modern philosophy is better reflected in recent phenomenological and existential philosophy. The dominant (...)

  48. The History of Philosophy: The Middle Ages and the Renaissance. [REVIEW]A. R. E. - 1966 - Review of Metaphysics 19 (3):582-582.
The third volume of Bréhier's seven volume history to be translated, and, like the previous two volumes, it is handsomely put together. Bréhier is perhaps at his best on the Medieval period in the history of philosophy, and, therefore, this volume will still be of value for serious students. As with the other volumes, the bibliographies have been updated.—E. A. R.

This is the second of the seven volumes of Bréhier's History to appear in translation. Though supplanted in most areas by more comprehensive studies which have appeared since its original publication in 1931, this particular volume still remains useful and is to be consulted on the relation of Hellenism and Christian philosophy. The bibliographies have been updated.—E. A. R.

  50. The History of Philosophy: The Seventeenth Century. [REVIEW]A. R. E. - 1967 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (3):536-536.
This is a translation of the fourth of the original seven fascicles of Bréhier's standard Histoire de la philosophie. The three prior fascicles have already appeared from the University of Chicago Press. The virtues of Bréhier's history are its extraordinary readability and unpretentious scholarship. The philosophers covered in depth by Bréhier are Bacon, Descartes, Pascal, Hobbes, Spinoza, Malebranche, Leibniz, and Locke, with lighter treatment being given to the Cambridge Platonists, Bayle, and Fontenelle. The bibliographies are neatly accessible (...)
