Johnston famously argued that the colors are, more or less inclusively speaking, dispositions to cause color experiences by arguing that this view best accommodates his five proposed core beliefs about color. Since then, Campbell, Kalderon, Gert, Benbaji, and others, have all engaged with at least some of Johnston’s proposed core beliefs in one way or another. Which propositions are core beliefs is ultimately an empirical matter. We investigate whether Johnston’s proposed core beliefs are, in fact, believed by assessing the agreement/disagreement (...) of non-philosophers with them. Two experiments are run each with large sample sizes, the second designed to address criticisms of the first. We find that non-philosophers mostly agree with the proposed core beliefs, but that they agree with some more than others. (shrink)

Color relationalism holds that the colors are constituted by relations to subjects. The introspective rejoinder against this view claims that it is opposed to our phenomenally-informed, pre-theoretic intuitions. The rejoinder seems to be correct about how colors appear when looking at how participants respond to an item about the metaphysical nature of color but not when looking at an item about the ascription of colors. The present article expands the properties investigated to sound and taste and inspects the mentioned asymmetry, (...) with a particular focus on the principle of charity. Using a metaphysical item, we find that color and sound are no different from shape, our control for a clearly anti-relational property. Taste, on the other hand, is no different from likability, our control for a clearly relational property. Importantly, we find that the disparity between metaphysical and ascription items is due to participants using a principle of charity to interpret disagreement cases such that both parties can be correct. It is widely held by philosophers not only that there is a causal condition on perception but also that the causal condition is a conceptual truth about perception. One influential line of argument for this claim is based on intuitive responses to a style of thought experiment popularized by Grice. Given the significance of these thought experiments to the literature, it is important to see whether the folk in fact respond to these cases in the way that philosophers assume they (...) should. We test folk intuitions regarding the causal theory of perception by asking our participants to what extent they agree that they would ‘see’ an object in various Gricean scenarios. We find that the intuitions of the folk do not strongly support the causal condition; they at most strongly support a ‘no blocker’ condition. We argue that this is problematic for the claim that the causal condition is a conceptual truth. (shrink)

Abstract:Jane Addams’ short book The Long Road of Woman’s Memory, which has largely been ignored by philosophers, identifies two important powers of memory. In addition to consoling the elderly and enabling them to make meanings of their pasts, memories also have the power to calcify into stories that reinforce shared moral values and incite moral progress. These observations serve as the starting point for a conversation on narrative medicine and its potential for improving medical treatment for patients receiving end-of-life care. (...) In addition to filling in one of the many gaps that exists in the literature surrounding Addams’ work, I also aim to contribute to the growing scholarship on person-centered end-of-life care in the field of bioethics. This book explores the concept of school belonging in adolescents from a socio-ecological perspective, acknowledging that young people are uniquely connected to a broad network of groups and systems within a school system. Using a socio-ecological framework, it positions belonging as an essential aspect of psychological functioning for which schools offer unique opportunities to improve. It also offers insights into the factors that influence school belonging at the student level during adolescence in educational settings. Taking a socio-ecological perspective and drawing (...) from innovative research methods, the book encourages researchers interested in school leadership to foster students' sense of belonging by developing their qualities and by changing school systems and processes. Revisionism about moral responsibility is the view that we would do well to distinguish between what we think about moral responsibility and what we ought to think about it, that the former is in some important sense implausible and conflicts with the latter, and so we should revise our concept accordingly. In this paper, I assess two related problems for revisionism and claim that focus on the first of these problems has thus far allowed the second to go largely unnoticed. (...) Here I develop this new objection to revisionism and argue that, while revisionists can successfully respond to the reference-anchoring problem, the normativity-anchoring problem poses a serious objection to the view. In particular, the methodological commitments used to motivate revisionism make it uniquely difficult for revisionists to justify our continued participation in the practice of moral praising and blaming. I conclude by briefly addressing a potential objection based on a common charge against revisionism: that there is no real difference between the view and its conventional competitors and thus the normativity-anchoring problem is of little interest in the broader dialectic. The philosophy of Martin Heidegger has often been criticized for lacking any ethical content. Some thinkers have even suggested that there can be no Heideggerian ethic either because of his association with the National Socialist Party or because of concerns about Heidegger's focus on ontology. In Building a Heideggerian Ethic, I address concerns about Heidegger's associations with the Nazis, arguing that they do not provide grounds for dismissing his philosophy. I also look at Heidegger's focus on ontology and argue that (...) it does not rule out the possibility of having an ethics. Consequently, I conclude that it is indeed possible to develop an ethics from Heidegger's description of Dasein in Being and Time, since this description entails a detailed discussion of the characteristics of Being-in-the-world. ;I then proceed to show how the concept of inauthenticity, which is described negatively and associated with everydayness, can be considered to be a pre-ethical state because it is untruthful and lacking in freedom. Inauthenticity necessarily precedes authenticity and inauthentic Dasein is not itself; it is a they-self. It relates to others in indifferent and deficient modes of solicitude. In this way, it lacks respect for the other and can dominate the other. ;Authentic Dasein, on the other hand, provides information about what a Heideggerian ethic might look like, particularly because of its emphasis on freedom and truth. While it is difficult to be authentic, since one must tolerate anxiety and not fall back into the 'they.' Authentic Dasein recognizes that death is one's ownmost possibility that is non-relational and not to be outstripped. By anticipating death resolutely, one can take responsibility for one's life and be ethical. ;I then develop the connection between authenticity and ethics. Ultimately, I illustrate that an ecofeminist ethic, as characterized by Karen J. Warren, would be one possible Heideggerian ethic. Using Heidegger's concept of "letting be," I show how such an ethic rejects the logic of domination. The ethic I develop provides situated universals whose use it determined by the context of the situation. I also show that the ethic I have developed is not consistent with fascist beliefs. (shrink)

This research is designed to gain an understanding of how accounting students respond to realistic, business ethical dilemmas. Prior research suggests that accounting students exhibit lower levels of ethical reasoning compared to other business and non-business majors. This study uses the Defining Issues Test, Version 2 to measure accounting students' ethical reasoning processes. The Mach IV scale is used to measure moral behavior. Eight ethical vignettes adapted from prior ethics studies represent realistic, business ethical scenarios. ;A total of sixty-eight undergraduate (...) accounting students are used to examine three hypotheses. Literature suggests that individuals with lower ethical reasoning levels are more likely to agree with unethical behavior. Therefore, hypothesis one investigates the relationship between ethical reasoning and ethical decision making. Literature also suggests that individuals agreeing with Machiavellian statements are more likely to agree with questionable activities. Hypothesis two investigates the relationship between Machiavellian behavior and ethical decision making. Prior gender literature suggests that gender influences ethical decision making, with females being more ethical than males. Therefore, hypothesis three examines whether female accounting students agree less with questionable activities compared to males. ;Results indicate that ethical reasoning is significantly correlated with students' ethical ratings on the business vignettes. Similarly, Machiavellian behavior is significantly correlated with students' ethical ratings. Consistent with prior gender literature, females agree less with questionable activities compared to male accounting students. (shrink)

Although release of captive cetaceans for reestablishment of extirpated populations has not yet been necessary, current releases of excess animals could provide information for future reintroduction efforts. Previously successful reintroductions have been correlated with large numbers of individuals released with a high probability of mortality . The purpose of this study was to determine factors that would increase probability of survival for small numbers of releasees. I examine ethical issues pertaining to the arguments that a minimal set of duties owed (...) to captive individuals extends to those being released. In this release, efforts to meet such duties included pre-release determination of associations and ability to forage, assessment of local dolphin behavioral ecology to best time the release and development of trained response to research vessels with remote tracking to monitor and recapture individuals unable to adapt. ;The group comprised 6 wild-born adults and 3 captive-born juvenile females. Male association patterns were recorded using focal animal and instantaneous sampling of activity state and proximity. Boat surveys of the coastal dolphin population were conducted for 27 months . Releases were tracked via radio telemetry, boat surveys and reported sightings. ;Pre-release association patterns changed during an episode of agonistic interactions and did not persist post-release. Three cases of stress-related illness associated with the shift in associations were monitored. Although soft release was timed to coincide with peak dolphin abundance, releasees did not join wild groups. Resighting frequencies of wild dolphins suggest an open population where individuals have few close associates and extensive ranges, thus it is not surprising that 5 released animals were not sighted beyond 2-4 weeks of monitoring. The only known mortality was a newborn calf. An adult male, the mother of the newborn calf, and a juvenile female were recaptured due to visible weight loss and interaction with humans. ;Recommendations include use of both radio and satellite tracking to maximize chances of relocating releasees and more emphasis on foraging ability pre-release. Additionally, further examination of mechanisms to enhance group cohesion and means of provisioning may enhance chances of survival and integration into wild populations. (shrink)

The move to remote learning during COVID-19 has impacted billions of students. While research shows that school closure, and the pandemic more generally, has led to student distress, the possibility that these disruptions can also prompt growth in is a worthwhile question to investigate. The current study examined stress-related growth (SRG) in a sample of students returning to campus after a period of COVID-19 remote learning (n= 404, age = 13–18). The degree to which well-being skills were taught at school (...) (i.e., positive education) before the COVID-19 outbreak and student levels of SRG upon returning to campus was testedviastructural equation modeling. Positive reappraisal, emotional processing, and strengths use in students were examined as mediators. The model provided a good fit [χ2= 5.37,df= 3,p= 0.146, RMSEA = 0.044 (90% CI = 0.00–0.10), SRMR = 0.012, CFI = 99, TLI = 0.99] with 56% of the variance in SRG explained. Positive education explained 15% of the variance in cognitive reappraisal, 7% in emotional processing, and 16% in student strengths use during remote learning. The results are discussed using a positive education paradigm with implications for teaching well-being skills at school to foster growth through adversity and assist in times of crisis. (shrink)

Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a difficult and enigmatic little philosophical classic, which has fascinated philosophers since its publication in 1921. Interpretations of it are still controversial, and the theory of what can only be shown, and not said, in particular, continues to be a matter of serious philosophical debate. The importance of his Central European background and engineering training has long been recognized. Although there is a substantial tradition of scholarly work concerning the influence of Heinrich Hertz and Wittgenstein's interest (...) in physics and the philosophy of science on the philosophical content of the Tractatus, there has been little serious historical research concerning his scientific training as an engineer. ;Wittgenstein was educated in a technical track, eventually earning an engineering certificate from the finest Technical Institute on the continent, the Technische Hochschule in Charlottenberg-Berlin. There has been a recognized need for fine-grained historical research on his education at the Oberrealschule in Linz, Austria, and his engineering work in Berlin, to fill an important gap in the scholarship concerning his early intellectual formation. One reason that this had not been addressed is that his records at Charlottenberg were lost during the bombing raids of World War II, and it seemed unlikely that important material concerning his engineering training remained. The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate Wittgenstein's engineering training, in order to fill the gap in the existing scholarship, and, more importantly, to determine what significance it had for the philosophical content of the Tractatus. ;In the course of archival research in Berlin, the required schedule or courses for mechanical engineers during Wittgenstein's attendance was discovered, making it possible to identify his professors and characterize the content of his coursework. His technical training focused heavily on mathematical drawing, which led me to investigate the role of visual thinking, as it was involved in engineering training, on the philosophical content of the Tractatus. I argue that both the Bild theory of language, and the theory of what can only be shown, and not said, were significantly shaped by the mindset developed during his Central European engineering training. In this thesis, I diagnose a tension in Nietzsche's writings. Nietzsche's writings display a desire for both a mode of articulation produced by the aggressive conquerer and one born from the passive "original mother." I argue that this manifest conflict is the result of an unresolved oedipal complex. I use categories imported from both psychoanalysis and feminist theory in order to make my diagnosis. I defend my purely heuristic use of these categories by grounding them in Nietzsche's own writings. ;Nietzsche (...) figures his desire for a primordial language in terms of feminine metaphors of birth and reproduction. Yet it becomes clear that his desire is motivated by a masculine fear. He claims that the philosophical traditional heretofore has been "impotent," "castrated," "emasculated," and it is this masculine fear which motivates Nietzsche in his call for a new language. Nietzsche wants to destroy his philosophical fathers so that he can take their place. He wants to demonstrate that he is "potent" where his fathers were not. ;Although Nietzsche desires a feminine language, all of the types of language which Nietzsche describes are masculine--they are motivated by this masculine oedipal desire. Nietzsche's desire for a feminine language, then, is merely another instance of the patriarchal desire to possess woman. ;The ideal women whom Nietzsche desires is a fetishized woman. She does not exist. This is why Nietzsche's desire is inherently frustrated. This is also why I argue, in conclusion, that by fetishizing "woman," Nietzsche silences women. Nietzsche substitutes his own voice for the voice of women. The voice we hear from Nietzsche quite clearly is a man's voice articulating traditional masculine desires. Moreover, by speaking for the ideal "woman," Nietzsche silences real women. (shrink)

BackgroundHealth research often uses health information, a subcategory of personal information, collected during clinical encounters. Conditions under which such health information can be used for the secondary purpose of research are set out in state, national and international law. In Australia, consent is required or the relevant conditions for a waiver of consent must be met and approved by a human research ethics committee (HREC). Consent for use of health information for research is rarely sought at an emergency department (ED) (...) presentation. Research often occurs after the index visit and gaining consent can be difficult. Waiver of consent provisions are frequently used, but acceptability of this approach to patients is unclear.ObjectiveTo identify ED patients’ knowledge and attitudes towards the use of health information for research, consent preferences and acceptability of waiver of consent.MethodsAn online, anonymous survey of adult patients attending two large EDs in Melbourne, Australia.Results103 patients completed the survey. We found that 52% were unaware that health information might be used for research. A majority (77%) felt that HREC approval for use of health information without consent was acceptable. However, 36% would prefer to be contacted regarding consent.ConclusionThese findings suggest a lack of awareness that health information can be used for research and that waiver of consent is acceptable, but not necessarily preferred, in most of the ED patient population. Efforts to increase awareness and provide opportunities to express preferences about health information use for research are needed. (shrink)

Recent empirical work on non-philosophers’ intuitions about epistemic normativity reveals patterns that cannot be fully accounted for by direct epistemic consequentialism. On the basis of these results, one might picture participants as “epistemic deontologists.” We present the results of two new experiments that support a more nuanced picture. We examine intuitions about guesses and hypotheses, and about beliefs. Our results suggest a two-factor model of intuitions, wherein both consequentialist and non-consequentialist considerations affect participants’ judgments about epistemic permissibility.

Colour relationalism holds that the colours are constituted by relations to subjects. Anti-relationalists have claimed that this view stands in stark contrast to our phenomenally-informed, pre-theoretic intuitions. Is this claim right? Cohen and Nichols’ recent empirical study suggests not, as about half of their participants seemed to be relationalists about colour. Despite Cohen and Nichols’ study, we think that the anti-relationalist’s claim is correct. We explain why there are good reasons to suspect that Cohen and Nichols’ experimental design skewed their (...) results in favour of relationalism. We then run an improved study and find that most of our participants seem to be anti-relationalists. We find some other interesting things too. Our results suggest that the majority of ordinary people find it no less intuitive that colours are objective than that shapes are objective. We also find some evidence that when those with little philosophical training are asked about the colours of objects, their intuitions about colour and shape cases are similar, but when asked about people’s colour ascriptions, their intuitions about colour and shape cases differ. In this article, we conceptualize the under investigated and under theorized relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and business responsibility. As an urgent social issue, IPV—understood as abuse of power within the context of an intimate partner relationship, mainly perpetrated by men and involving a pattern of behavior—has been studied for decades in many disciplines. A less common yet vital research perspective is to examine IPV as it relates to the business and to ask how organizations should engage with IPV. (...) In response to this question, we contribute a framework drawing from two distinctions in the business responsibility scholarship: the assumed role of the organization (responsibility to the firm/market; responsibility to the broader socio-political-economic environment); and the second focused on the approach to conceptualizing ethics (justice/fairness; ethics of care). Thus, we explicate four approaches to business responsibility and IPV, which serve the purposes of mapping three selected contributions, identifying limitations of these approaches, and opening up future research opportunities. They thus hypothesized that folk intuitions better align with a no blocker condition than with a causal condition. This paper continues this line of enquiry with two new experiments. The paper investigates the generality and robustness of Roberts et al.’s findings by expanding the sense modalities tested from only vision to audition and olfaction as well. The paper also uses Gricean-style thought experiments as a case study for investigating the “reflection defense” against the negative project in experimental philosophy. Our results replicate and extend Roberts et al.’s study and support their hypothesis that folk intuitions better align with a no blocker condition. We recently conducted an experiment to show that a lot of the empirically measured disagreement cited to support the premise that there is mass perceptual disagreement about the colors, a premise often cited by philosophers, is due to conceptual factors. Kuehni and Hardin object to how we measured disagreement and to various aspects of our experimental design. In this reply, we defend our study.

Are the following propositions true of the colors: No object can be more than one determinable or determinate color all over at the same time (Incompatibility); the colors of objects are mind-independent (Objectivism); and most human observers usually perceive the colors of objects veridically in typical conditions (Veridicality)? One reason to think not is that the empirical literature appears to support the proposition that there is mass perceptual disagreement about the colors of objects amongst human observers in typical conditions (P-Disagreement). Drawing on the institutional history of the sperm bank and legacies of eugenics, we consider how spectrums of risk simultaneously constrain and expand possibilities for disability justice. We do so by examining the discourses surrounding US-based Xytex Corporation sperm bank Donor 9623, described as the ‘perfect’ donor but later discovered to have a criminal record and a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Haunted by the dread of disability, we examine how parents mark the fate of their donor-conceived child on a graded spectrum (...) of genetic and psychiatric risk, in need of perpetual monitoring and intervention. Using this case to understand the contemporary reorganization of disability via spectral risk, we advocate for a critical engagement with how disability haunting can enable us to better attend to the effects of the past and present in such a way that provokes a more collectively just future. In A Critical Youth Studies for the 21st Century Peter Kelly and Annelies Kamp present an edited collection that explores the challenges and opportunities faced by young people in an often dangerous 21st century. In an increasingly globalised world these challenges and opportunities include those associated with widening inequalities, precarious labour markets, the commodification of education, the hopes for democracy, and with practising an identity under these circumstances and in these spaces. Drawing on contemporary critical social theories and diverse (...) methodologies, contributors to the collection, who are established and emerging scholars from the Americas, Europe, and Asia/Pacific, open up discussions about what a critical youth studies can contribute to community, policy and academic debates about these challenges and opportunities. The eight essays contained in this book explore the portrayal of women, and various philosophical responses to that portrayal in contemporary post-civil rights society. They bring feminist voices to the conversation about gender and attests to the importance of feminist critique in what is sometimes claimed to be a post-feminist era.

Over recent decades, influential agri-food tech actors, institutions, policymakers and others have fostered dominant techno-optimistic, future visions of food and agriculture that are having profound material impacts in present agri-food worlds. Analyzing such realities has become paramount for scholars working across the fields of science and technology studies (STS) and critical agri-food studies, many of whom contribute to STSFAN—the Science and Technology Studies Food and Agriculture Network. This article introduces a Special Issue featuring the scholarship of STSFAN members, which cover (...) a range of case studies and interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary engagements involving such contested agri-food futures. Their contributions are unique in that they emerged from the network’s specific modus operandi: a workshopping practice that supports the constructive, interdisciplinary dialogue necessary for critical research and rigorous analyses of science and technology in agri-food settings. This introduction offers an overview of STS and critical agri-food studies scholarship, including their historical entanglements in respective studies of food scandals, scientific regimes and technological determinism. We illustrate how interdisciplinary engagement across these fields has contributed to the emergent field of what we term agri-food technoscience scholarship, which the contributions of this Special Issue speak to. After a brief discussion of STS concepts, theories and methods shaping agri-food policy, technology design and manufacturing, we present the eleven Special Issue contributions in three thematic clusters: influential actors and their agri-food imaginaries; obfuscated (material) realities in agri-food technologies; and conflictual and constructive engagements in academia and agri-food. The precarious rights of senior citizens, especially those who are highly educated and who are expected to counsel and guide the younger generations, has stimulated the creation internationally of advocacy associations and opinion leader groups. The strength of these groups, however, varies from country to country. In some countries, they are supported and are the focus of intense interest; in others, they are practically ignored. For this is reason we believe that the creation of a network of all these associations (...) is essential. The proposed network would act as a support for the already-existing policies of the United Nations’ High Commission for Human Rights, of independent experts, and of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People. All three have long ago recommended the creation of a recognized instrument for uniting presently scattered efforts. The proposed network, therefore, will seek to promote the international exchange of relevant expertise, and it will reinforce the commitments and actions that single countries are currently taking to meet these objectives. For example, informative public events can be organised to promote particular support initiatives and to provide an opportunity for new members of the network to be presented. The network will promote health for senior citizens, disease prevention, senior mobility, safe free time for seniors, alimentary education, protection against new risks and dangers, as well as equity in the services necessary for seniors to adopt new information and communication technologies. In the case of retired academic members, the network will promote equality with respect to continuing use of digital technologies (particularly email), continuing access to research libraries, and the guaranteed ability for seniors to fund their own research programs and to deliver free seminars. Also, to synthesize and improve existing knowledge and models to develop from effective business and evaluation models, as well as to guarantee quality and education, proper dissemination and ensure the future of the Action. The Working Group further aims to enable capacity building to improve interdisciplinary participation, to promote knowledge (...) exchange and to foster a cross-European interdisciplinary research capacity, to improve cooperation and co-creation with cross-sectors stakeholders and to introduce and educate students SHAFE implementation and sustainability. To enable the achievement of the objectives of Working Group 4, the Leader of the Working Group, the Chair and Vice-Chair, in close cooperation with the Science Communication Coordinator, developed a template to map the current state of SHAFE policies, funding opportunities and networking in the COST member countries of the Action. On invitation, the Working Group lead received contributions from 37 countries, in a total of 85 Action members. The contributions provide an overview of the diversity of SHAFE policies and opportunities in Europe and beyond. These were not edited or revised and are a result of the main areas of expertise and knowledge of the contributors; thus, gaps in areas or content are possible and these shall be further explored in the following works and reports of this WG. But this preliminary mapping is of huge importance to proceed with the WG activities. In the following chapters, an introduction on the need of SHAFE policies is presented, followed by a summary of the main approaches to be pursued for the next period of work. The deliverable finishes with the opportunities of capacity building, networking and funding that will be relevant to undertake within the frame of Working Group 4 and the total COST Action. Feminist Time Against Nation Time offers a series of essays that explore the complex and oftentimes contradictory relationship between feminism and nationalism through a problematization of contemporality. The collection pursues the following questions: how do the specific temporalities of nationalism and war limit and delimit public spaces in which dissent might happen; and how might we account for the often contradictory and ambiguous relationship of "feminism" and "nationalism" through an exploration of the problem of time?
