In occasione dell’ottantesimo anniversario del Museo nazionale dell’Iran, una mostra ospita circa cinquanta opere del Louvre parigino e apre riflessioni sulla diplomazia culturale.

En se replongeant dans les archives d’un mouvement artistique oublié, qui se réunissait au Louvre pour méditer sur les révolutions à apporter à l’art (celui des Méditateurs et des Dormeuses) nous faisons retour sur plusieurs cas de performances mises en scène dans ce musée. Les artistes questionnent le conservatisme des institutions, proposent de les perturber et de faire de ces perturbations des œuvres d’art.

Alexander Sokurov’s latest film, Francofonia (2015), produced by the Louvre and filmed in France, takes up the issue of the Louvre in the middle of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Paris. This quasi-documentary, filmed along the lines of Sokurov’s signature documentary “elegies,” also encompasses the history of the Louvre up to the present day. Francofonia follows in the long line of Sokurov’s other films set in museums. Sokurov is an author who has worked more (...) than any other filmmaker to translate paintings into a cinematic medium. While engaging with art history and great museums, however, Sokurov also gives a poignant interpretation of the violence of history that often surrounds great works of art. Thus the museum, in Sokurov’s cinematic interpretation, is both an archive of the most valuable products of civilization, as well as a material monument to the founding cultural and political violence that produced and surrounds it. The overt scrutiny and hypervigilance with which Sokurov films museums affects the very mode of his filming: his camera operates as if it were a museum itself, each film becoming an attempt to save civilization from its own ruination, and from its own blindness. Every frame in Sokurov’s films is thus a freeze-frame, born out of the paralyzing tension between external historical nihilism and the beauty of art. (shrink)

A fragmentary red-figure cup, formerly in the collection of Henri Seyrig, has been connected with the myth of Danae and Perseus ever since Beazley first noted it in 1954. Although a number of iconographical discussions of this myth have appeared since, the vase has never been published and, therefore, its iconography never discussed. Today, the fragments are in the Louvre, inv. no. 980.0820. Thanks to the kindness of F. Villard and A. Pasquier, I am able to publish them here (...) for the first time. (shrink)

Πρόκειται γιά διπλό ξύλινο αὐλό, ἐξαιρετικά καλά διατηρημένο. 'Αποτελεῖται ἀπό δυό σωλῆνες πού σχηματίζονται ἀπό ἕνα στόμιο καί ἕναν ὅλμο, καί ἀπό τόν « βόμβυκα » · ἔχουν 7-9 τρύπες, ἀπό τίς ὁποῖες μιά γιά τόν ἀντίχειρα στό κάτω μέρος καί τῶν δυό σωλήνων. Ἡ θέση τους ποικίλλει σημαντικά ἀπό σωλήνα σέ σωλήνα καί μπορεῖ κανείς νά ἀποκατάσταση τῆς μουσικῆς κλίμακας τοῦ ὀργάνου, σύμφωνα μέ ὑπολογισμούς πού χρησιμοποιοῦσαν οἱ Ἕλληνες θεωρητικοί. Μ' αὐτό τόν τρόπο ἀποδεικνύεται ὅτι ὁ διπλός αὐλός δέν (...) ἐπινοήθηκε γιά ἐκτέλεση ἐτεροφώνων μελωδιῶν : ὁ ὀργανοποιός ἀνοίγει τρύπες σέ δυό σωλῆνες, ἐκεί πού θά τοῦ ἦταν ἀδύνατο νά τό κάνει μόνο στον ἕνα χωρίς νά χαλάσει τό ὄργανο. Στό διπλό αὐλό τοῦ Λούβρου μπορεῖ νά ἐκτελεσθούν 16 νότες · πρόκειται γιά ὄργανο ἐξαιρετικῆς κατασκευῆς πού προορίζεται γιά δεξιοτέχνη. Μπορεῖ νά χρονολογηθεῖ στά τέλη τοῦ 4ου αἰώνα. (shrink)

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an exceptional document preserved at the Louvre Museum under the mark MAO 2098. The manuscript is a calligraphic genealogical scroll relating to the Ḫwāğas, members of a Sufi Naqšbandi lineage of East Turkestan which was extremely powerful during the 17th and the 18th centuries. Striving to join the dots literally as well as figuratively, I propose to read the šağara in several different ways. Most obviously, the text provides some limited new (...) information on members of the Āfāqi branch of the Ḫwāğa family. At the same time, we can read the text as a communicative device serving to advance two intertwined social practices: family strategies and the construction of power. Produced within a forum of competition with other aristocratic households, prestigious Sufi lineages in particular, the scroll serves to highlight both the Šarīfian origin of the family and the hereditary succession of its spiritual leaders. At the same time, the manuscript’s remarkable aesthetic qualities served to impress upon those who saw in it the numinous force of the Ḫwāğas’ supernatural authority. (shrink)

Inscriptions of Amathous IX. A dispatch from the Vogüé mission (1862) rediscovered at the Louvre. An inscription found in 1862 by de Vogüé’s archaeological mission in the village of Aghios Tychonas (coming so from the site of Amathous) has been rediscovered in the Louvre in 2009. This was only known through Waddington’s old publication (1870). The text, dating probably of the early Hellenistic period, mentions a trees plantation and the offering of a naos by a certain Simos. This (...) plot, which should have been a small sacred grove (alsos), was situated between the Heraion and a pavement. Even it is not possible to determinate the location of this certainly private consecration, the inscription gives a precious evidence on the religious topography of Amathous at the beginning of the Ptolemaic era, and in particular on the presence of a sanctuary dedicated to Hera, whose cult is very rarely attested in Cyprus. The theorist and philosopher Julia Kristeva is invited to curate an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris as part of a series-Parti Pris - and to turn this into a book, The Severed Head: Capital Visions. The organiser, Régis Michel, wants something partisan, that will challenge people to think, and Kristeva delivers in response a collection of severed heads neatly summarising her critique of the whole of western culture! Three figures dominate, providing a key to making sense of the (...) exhibition: Freud, Bataille, and the maternal body. Using these figures, familiar from across the breadth of her work over the last half a century, she produces a witty analysis of western culture’s persistent privileging of disembodied masculine rationality; the head, ironically phallic, ironically and yet necessarily severed; the maternal body continually arousing a “jubilant anxiety”, expressed through violence. Points of critique are raised in relation to Kristeva’s normative tendencies-could we not tell a different story about women, for example? The cultural context of the exhibition is also addressed: who are the intended viewers/readers and whose interests are being served here? Ultimately, however, this is a celebration of Kristeva’s tribute to psychic survivors. (shrink)

P. 53-59 Sur la coupe CA 482 du Louvre, le Peintre d'Hésiode a figuré, avec son élégance et son raffinement habituels, une jeune femme qui tient une cithare en berceau : sur ses genoux est posé un objet qui a résisté jusqu'à présent à toute tentative d'identification. Plusieurs hypothèses, peu satisfaisantes, ont été formulées. Schéma et mesures à l'appui, on montre qu'il s'agit en réalité d'une deuxième cithare (...) en berceau, posée à plat et donc vue de profil. Le a pris soin de lui donner exactement les mêmes dimensions et les mêmes au détail près, que l'autre. Reste une inconnue : le nom antique de la cithare en. (shrink)

Ό Α. Pasquier μελετάει δύο πήλινα ἀντικείμενα πού ἀνήκουν στίς συλλογές τοῦ Λούβρου. Το πρῶτο εἶναι γυναῖκείο εἰδώλιο : τό σώμα εἶναι πλασμένο και τό κεφάλι ἔκτυπο. Ή μελέτη τοῦ εἰδωλίου τό ξανατοποθετεῖ γύρω στο 570 π.Χ. στο ἐπίκεντρο τῆς παραγωγῆς τών κοροπλαστῶν τῆς Λακωνίας. Τό δεύτερο ἀντικείμενο εἶναι ἕνα μικρό πλαστικό ἀγγεῖο, μέ στόμιο ἀρυβάλλου δίμορφο : ἀπό τήν μιά ἕνα ἀνδρικό πρόσωπο, ἀπ' τήν ἄλλη ἕνα φαλλό. Γιά πολύ καιρό ἀμφέβαλλαν γιά τήν αὐθεντικότητά του, ἀλλά αὐτή ἐπιβεβαιώνεται ἀπό (...) τό θετικό τεστ τῆς θερμοφωταύγειας. Τό σχῆμα τοῦ στομίου καί ή ποιότητα τοῦ προσώπου ὁδηγοῦν τόν Α. Jean-Marie Straub – Non, là c’est un plan qu’on a tourné 10 ou 15 fois et qui introduit Ouvriers et paysans. Ce n’est pas le même opérateur et ça a été tourné un an ou deux avant, par un autre opérateur qui s’appelle Renato Berta. Il y a une cascade. Σχολιασμένος κατάλογος τών 43 ελληνικών επιγραφών πού μεταφέρθηκαν τό 1918 καί τό 1929 στό Μουσείο του Λούβρου, πολλές άπό τίς όποιες είχαν θεωρηθεί χαμένες. 'Επανεξέταση τής επιτύμβιας αττικής επιγραφής IG Ρ, 1084 του Φρύγιου Μάννη καί επανέκδοση τής αφιερωματικής επιγραφής άπό τήν Κύπρο CIG, 2641 στό Δία Κεραύνιο. Κατάλογος τών ελληνικών επιγραφών πού έχουν μείνει στό Cabinet des Médailles, εκτός άπό αυτές τής συλλογής Frochner.

Adaptation de plusieurs conférences de l’auteure, ce petit livre (par son format et son nombre de pages) a l’ambition de nous présenter, à partir du Portrait de femme noire (1800), visible au musée du Louvre depuis deux siècles, « une histoire impériale des formes » (p. 19) en replaçant l’expérience de la diaspora africaine dans le champ des beaux-arts occidentaux.
