After Leibniz's death in 1716, Clarke published an edition of their philosophical correspondence--a wide-ranging discussion of the nature of God, human souls, free will and indifference of choice, space and time, the vacuum, miracles, and matter and force. Clarke included his own letters, his translations of Leibniz's letters, and some translated passages from Leibniz's French and Latin works that helped to illuminate their exchanges.

In the New Essays on Human Understanding, Leibniz argues chapter by chapter with John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, challenging his views about knowledge, personal identity, God, morality, mind and matter, nature versus nurture, logic and language, and a host of other topics. The work is a series of sharp, deep discussions by one great philosopher of the work of another. Leibniz's references to his contemporaries and his discussions of the ideas and institutions of the age make this (...) a fascinating and valuable document in the history of ideas. The work was originally written in French, and the version by Peter Remnant and Jonathan Bennett, based on the only reliable French edition (published in 1962), first appeared in 1981 and has become the standard English translation. It has been thoroughly revised for this series and provided with a new and longer introduction, a chronology on Leibniz's life and career and a guide to further reading. (shrink)

Die Ausgabe präsentiert Leibniz' frühe Schriften und Briefe zum Naturrecht in deutscher Übersetzung; den lateinischen Originaltext nach der Akademie-Ausgabe stellt sie gegenüber. Sie umfaßt vier Textgruppen:1. Eine Aufzeichnung zum Leib-Seele-Zusammenhang und zur moralischen Sphäre des Verstandes 2. Den zweiten Teil der Neuen Methode, Jurisprudenz zu lernen und zu lehren 3. Die sechs erhaltenen Entwürfe zu den Elementen des Naturrechts 4. Vier Briefe zum Verhältnis von positivem und natürlichem Recht.

Die zweisprachige Ausgabe "Monadologie und andere metaphysische Schriften" ermöglicht ein genaues Studium der Leibnizschen Metaphysik von der Mitte der 1680er Jahre, als die "Metaphysische Abhandlung" entstand, bis zum Ende seines Lebens dreißig Jahre später, als Leibniz seine Monadenlehre entwickelte. Seine drei längeren Abhandlungen zur Metaphysik hat Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) selbst nicht veröffentlicht, sie haben aber seit dem 18. Jahrhundert das Bild des Philosophen wesentlich geprägt und unsere Auffassung über neuzeitliche Metaphysik stark mitbestimmt. Mit der Lehre von (...) der Monade als dem Prinzip der Einzigartigkeit des Seienden entwickelte Leibniz einen Gedanken, der für die Entfaltung des gesamten neuzeitlichen Denkens tragend wurde: den Gedanken der Individualität. Die "Metaphysische Abhandlung", die "Monadologie" und die Schrift über "Auf Vernunft gegründete Prinzipien der Natur und der Gnade" werden hier in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe mit neuer Übersetzung und einheitlichem Begriffsglossar vorgelegt. Anmerkungen verweisen auf andere Textstellen bei Leibniz, der seine Philosophie vielfach in Gelegenheitsschriften und Briefen formulierte. Die Einleitung gibt Hinweise auf Textentstehung und -überlieferung und thematisiert einige Probleme der Übersetzung Leibnizscher Schriften, deren Sprache sowohl begrifflich streng als auch reich an Bildern ist. A nova instituição, a Académie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Prusse, conseguiu a Societas, e a Miscellanea Berolinensia foi sucedida pelo Berlim histoire et mémoires em 1745/46.

Die Generales Inquisitiones von 1686 stellen die wichtigste geschlossene Arbeit Leibniz' zu Fragen der Logik dar. Wie in dem ebenfalls 1686 verfaßten Discours de Métaphysique (PhB 260) wird hier Leibniz' Auffassung deutlich, in seinem Denken eine gewisse systematische Geschlossenheit gefunden zu haben.

J'ai fait dernierement (etant a un endroit ou quelques jours durant je n'avais rien a faire) un petit discours de Metaphysique, dont je serais bien aise d'avoir le sentiment de M. Arnauld. Leibniz annoncait en ces termes, en fevrier 1686, a l'un de ses nombreux correspondants, l'achevement tout recent de ces fameux trente sept articles. Ce discours offre, avec une remarquable densite, le premier grand expose d'ensemble des principes generaux d'une metaphysique qui jusque la se cherchait encore a travers (...) de nombreux travaux partiels; c'est cette synthese, qui sera bientot reprise par d'innombrables opuscules, qui inspirera encore les grandes oeuvres de maturite (Theodicee, Monadologie, Principes de la nature et de la grace). The selections contained in these volumes from the papers and letters of Leibniz are intended to serve the student in two ways: first, by providing a more adequate and balanced conception of the full range and penetration of Leibniz's creative intellectual powers; second, by inviting a fresher approach to his intellectual growth and a clearer perception of the internal strains in his thinking, through a chronological arrangement. Much confusion has arisen in the past through a neglect of the (...) develop ment of Leibniz's ideas, and Couturat's impressive plea, in his edition of the Opuscu/es et fragments (p. xii), for such an arrangement is valid even for incomplete editions. The beginning student will do well, however, to read the maturer writings of Parts II, III, and IV first, leaving Part I, from a period too largely neglected by Leibniz criticism, for a later study of the still obscure sources and motives of his thought. The Introduction aims primarily to provide cultural orientation and an exposition of the structure and the underlying assumptions of the philosophical system rather than a critical evaluation. I hope that together with the notes and the Index, it will provide those aids to the understanding which the originality of Leibniz's scientific, ethical, and metaphysical efforts deserve. (shrink)

LEIBNIZ AND THE TWO SOPHIES is a critical edition of all of the philosophically important material from the correspondence between the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) and his two royal patronesses, Electress Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), and her daughter, Queen Sophie Charlotte of Prussia (1668-1705). In this correspondence, Leibniz expounds in a very accessible way his views on topics such as the nature and operation of the mind, innate knowledge, the afterlife, ethics, and human nature. The (...) correspondence also contains the only known philosophical writings by Sophie and Sophie Charlotte, and thus provides a valuable insight into their views and concerns, as well as throwing light on their characters. La traducción al latín de la obra de Maimónides Moreh Nevukhim | Guía para Perplejos, ha sido la obra judía más influyente en los últimos milenios (Di Segni, 2019; Rubio, 2006; Wohlman, 1988, 1995; Kohler, 2017). Ésta marcó el comienzo de la escolástica, «hija del judaísmo nutrida por pensadores judíos, » según el historiador Heinrich Graetz (Geschichte der Juden, L. 6, Leipzig 1861, p. xii). Impresa por la primera imprenta mecánica de Gutenberg, su influencia en Occidente se extendió hasta el (...) This volume contains more than 60 original translations of papers written by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716). As well as contributing to Leibniz scholarship, it is intended to function as an introductory text for students.

Although Leibniz's writing forms an enormous corpus, no single work stands as a canonical expression of his whole philosophy. In addition, the wide range of Leibniz's work--letters, published papers, and fragments on a variety of philosophical, religious, mathematical, and scientific questions over a fifty-year period--heightens the challenge of preparing an edition of his writings in English translation from the French and Latin.
