How Good is the Science That Informs Government Policy? A Lesson From the U.K.’s Response to 2020 CoV-2 Outbreak.Jessica Cooper, Neofytos Dimitriou & Ognjen Arandjelovíc - 2021 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 18 (4):561-568.
In an era when public faith in politicians is dwindling, yet trust in scientists remains relatively high, governments are increasingly emphasizing the role of science based policy-making in response to challenges such as climate change and global pandemics. In this paper we question the quality of some scientific advice given to governments and the robustness and transparency of the entire framework which envelopes such advice, all of which raise serious ethical concerns. In particular we focus on the so-called Imperial Model (...)

    Corporate Ethics: Philosophical Concepts Guiding Business Practices.Dimitrios Dimitriou - 2022 - Conatus 7 (1):33-60.
In the highly competitive global market, characterized by rapid political, economic, environmental and technological changes, there has been an increased interest in the role of ethics for shaping corporate actions and highlighting the essential tasks and measures to fulfill two generic missions: support enterprises to make distinctive, lasting and substantial improvements in their performance and build a great firm that attracts, develops, excites and retains exceptional people. This paper addresses the issues arising from opposing forces, namely on the one hand (...)

  7. PDL for ordered trees.Loredana Afanasiev, Patrick Blackburn, Ioanna Dimitriou, Bertrand Gaiffe, Evan Goris, Maarten Marx & Maarten de Rijke - 2005 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 15 (2):115-135.
This paper is about a special version of PDL, proposed by Marcus Kracht, for reasoning about sibling ordered trees. It has four basic programs corresponding to the child, parent, left- and right-sibling relations in such trees. The original motivation for this language is rooted in the field of model-theoretic syntax. Motivated by recent developments in the area of semi-structured data, and, especially, in the field of query languages for XML (eXtensible Markup Language) documents, we revisit the language. This renewed interest (...)

The Presentation of Eating Disorders in Saudi Arabia.Aisha Jawed, Amy Harrison & Dagmara Dimitriou - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Objective: There is lack of information on the presentation of eating disorders (EDs) in Saudi Arabia using gold standard clinical tools. The present study aimed to provide data on the presentation of EDs in Saudi Arabia using clinically validated measures.Method: Hundred and thirty-three individuals (33 male) with a mean age of 22 years (2.63) completed three measures: the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE), a semi-structured interview, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), a self-report measure, and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (...)

Premature consent and patient duties.Andrew P. Rebera & Dimitris Dimitriou - 2021 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 24 (4):701-709.
This paper addresses the problem of ‘premature consent’. The term ‘premature consent’ denotes patient decisions that are: formulated prior to discussion with the appropriate healthcare professional ; based on information from unreliable sources ; and resolutely maintained despite the HCP having provided alternative reliable information. HCPs are not obliged to respect premature consent patients’ demands for unindicated treatments. But why? What is it that premature consent patients do or get wrong? Davis has argued that premature consent patients are incompetent and (...)

All uncountable cardinals in the Gitik model are almost Ramsey and carry Rowbottom filters.Arthur W. Apter, Ioanna M. Dimitriou & Peter Koepke - 2016 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 62 (3):225-231.
Using the analysis developed in our earlier paper, we show that every uncountable cardinal in Gitik's model of in which all uncountable cardinals are singular is almost Ramsey and is also a Rowbottom cardinal carrying a Rowbottom filter. We assume that the model of is constructed from a proper class of strongly compact cardinals, each of which is a limit of measurable cardinals. Our work consequently reduces the best previously known upper bound in consistency strength for the theory math formula (...)

Digital tools in the informed consent process: a systematic review.Francesco Gesualdo, Margherita Daverio, Laura Palazzani, Dimitris Dimitriou, Javier Diez-Domingo, Jaime Fons-Martinez, Sally Jackson, Pascal Vignally, Caterina Rizzo & Alberto Eugenio Tozzi - 2021 - BMC Medical Ethics 22 (1):1-10.
Background Providing understandable information to patients is necessary to achieve the aims of the Informed Consent process: respecting and promoting patients’ autonomy and protecting patients from harm. In recent decades, new, primarily digital technologies have been used to apply and test innovative formats of Informed Consent. We conducted a systematic review to explore the impact of using digital tools for Informed Consent in both clinical research and in clinical practice. Understanding, satisfaction and participation were compared for digital tools versus the (...)

Der „Mythos Córdoba 1978“ im Spiegel der Berichterstattung über die Fußballeuropameisterschaft 2008. Zwischen diskursiver Rekonstruktion des Vergangenen und kollektiver Identitätsbildung / The “Córdoba Myth” of 1978 as Reflected in the Coverage of the 2008 European Football Championships: Between Discursive Reconstruction of the Past and Collective Identity Development. [REVIEW]Erich Müller, Gerold Sattlecker & Minas Dimitriou - 2010 - Sport Und Gesellschaft 7 (2):145-174.

Good Sleep Quality Improves the Relationship Between Pain and Depression Among Individuals With Chronic Pain.Zoe Zambelli, Elizabeth J. Halstead, Antonio R. Fidalgo & Dagmara Dimitriou - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Individuals with chronic pain often experience co-existing sleep problems and depression-related states. Chronic pain, sleep problems, and depression interrelate, and have been shown to exacerbate one another, which negatively impacts quality of life. This study explored the relationships between pain severity, pain interference, sleep quality, and depression among individuals with chronic pain. Secondly, we tested whether sleep quality may moderate the relationship between pain and depression. A cross-sectional survey was completed by 1,059 adults with non-malignant chronic pain conditions and collected (...)

    On Katherine Dimitriou’s “Drowning Man”.Joseph Ulatowski - 2012 - Southwest Philosophy Review 28 (2):25-28.
Ms. Dimitriou's motivist view has a simple upshot: for at least some cases, our moral assessment of an action should depend on the motives behind it (Dimitriou, passim). This may be contrasted with the antimotivist position, the view that argues motives should not figure into our moral assessment of an action. She presents two provocative cases where an agent’s motive “infects” the concomitant action. One example involves racist thinking and the other a form of sexual self-gratification. Given that (...)

Remarks on Gitik's model and symmetric extensions on products of the Lévy collapse.Amitayu Banerjee - 2020 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 66 (3):259-279.
We improve on results and constructions by Apter, Dimitriou, Gitik, Hayut, Karagila, and Koepke concerning large cardinals, ultrafilters, and cofinalities without the axiom of choice. In particular, we show the consistency of the following statements from certain assumptions: the first supercompact cardinal can be the first uncountable regular cardinal, all successors of regular cardinals are Ramsey, every sequence of stationary sets in is mutually stationary, an infinitary Chang conjecture holds for the cardinals, and all are singular. In each of (...)

Combinatorial properties and dependent choice in symmetric extensions based on Lévy collapse.Amitayu Banerjee - 2022 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 62 (3):369-399.
We work with symmetric extensions based on Lévy collapse and extend a few results of Apter, Cody, and Koepke. We prove a conjecture of Dimitriou from her Ph.D. thesis. We also observe that if V is a model of $$\textsf {ZFC}$$ ZFC, then $$\textsf {DC}_{<\kappa }$$ DC < κ can be preserved in the symmetric extension of V in terms of symmetric system $$\langle {\mathbb {P}},{\mathcal {G}},{\mathcal {F}}\rangle $$ ⟨ P, G, F ⟩, if $${\mathbb {P}}$$ P is $$\kappa (...)
