Cultivating Affective Resilience: Proof-of-Principle Evidence of Translational Benefits From a Novel Cognitive-Emotional Training Intervention.Sanda Dolcos, Yifan Hu, Christian Williams, Paul C. Bogdan, Kelly Hohl, Howard Berenbaum & Florin Dolcos - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Available evidence highlights the importance of emotion regulation in psychological well-being. However, translation of the beneficial effects of ER from laboratory to real-life remains scarce. Here, we present proof-of-principle evidence from a novel cognitive-emotional training intervention targeting the development of ER skills aimed at increasing resilience against emotional distress. This pilot intervention involved training military veterans over 5–8 weeks in applying two effective ER strategies [Focused Attention and Cognitive Reappraisal ] to scenarios presenting emotional conflicts. Training was preceded and followed (...)

Emotional dissociations in temporal associations: opposing effects of arousal on memory for details surrounding unpleasant events.Paul C. Bogdan, Sanda Dolcos, Kara D. Federmeier, Alejandro Lleras, Hillary Schwarb & Florin Dolcos - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
Research targeting emotion’s impact on relational episodic memory has largely focused on spatial aspects, but less is known about emotion’s impact on memory for an event’s temporal associations. The present research investigated this topic. Participants viewed a series of interspersed negative and neutral images with instructions to create stories linking successive images. Later, participants performed a surprise memory test, which measured temporal associations between pairs of consecutive pictures where one picture was negative and one was neutral. Analyses focused on how (...)

Social Expectations are Primarily Rooted in Reciprocity: An Investigation of Fairness, Cooperation, and Trustworthiness.Paul C. Bogdan, Florin Dolcos, Matthew Moore, Illia Kuznietsov, Steven A. Culpepper & Sanda Dolcos - 2023 - Cognitive Science 47 (8):e13326.
Social expectations guide people's evaluations of others’ behaviors, but the origins of these expectations remain unclear. It is traditionally thought that people's expectations depend on their past observations of others’ behavior, and people harshly judge atypical behavior. Here, we considered that social expectations are also influenced by a drive for reciprocity, and people evaluate others’ actions by reflecting on their own decisions. To compare these views, we performed four studies. Study 1 used an Ultimatum Game task where participants alternated Responder (...)

Current Emotion Research in Cognitive Neuroscience: Linking Enhancing and Impairing Effects of Emotion on Cognition.Florin Dolcos & Ekaterina Denkova - 2014 - Emotion Review 6 (4):362-375.
Emotions can have both enhancing and impairing effects on various cognitive processes, from lower to higher level processes. The present article discusses emerging brain imaging evidence linking these opposing effects of emotion, which points to overlapping and dissociable neural systems involving both bottom-up and top-down mechanisms. The link between the enhancing and impairing effects is also discussed in a clinical context, with a focus on posttraumatic stress disorder, where these opposing effects tend to co-occur, are exacerbated, and are detrimental. Overall, (...)

Environmental Dynamism: Increasing Housing Needs in Urban Ghana and Vegetation Sustainability.Esther Y. Dasno-Wiredu & Mohammed Sanda - 2021 - Environment, Space, Place 13 (1):133-156.
Abstract:The increasing needs for housing in Ghana is a result of urbanisation which is also a sign of improvement in the socio-economic lives of the people. Building of houses usually replaces prime vegetation land. The rate of indiscriminate devegetation for housing purpose in Ghana is as a result of the lack of a comprehensive land use policy implementation in the country. It is clearly stated in the country's land use policy that ‘the principle of optimum usage for all types of (...)

Emotional influences on perception and working memory.Juyoen Hur, Alexandru D. Iordan, Florin Dolcos & Howard Berenbaum - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 31 (6):1294-1302.
Although there has been steady progress elucidating the influence of emotion on cognition, it remains unclear precisely when and why emotion impairs or facilitates cognition. The present study investigated the mechanisms involved in the influence of emotion on perception and working memory, using modified 0-back and 2-back tasks, respectively. First, results showed that attentional focus modulated the impact of emotion on perception. Specifically, emotion facilitated perceptual task performance when it was relevant to the task, but it impaired performance when it (...)

Body Figure Idealization and Body Appearance Pressure in Fitness Instructors.Therese Fostervold Mathisen, Jenny Aambø, Solfrid Bratland-Sanda, Christine Sundgot-Borgen, Kethe Svantorp-Tveiten & Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
PurposeThe fitness centers are settings for health promotion, yet may serve as a stage for counterproductive figure idealization. Such idealization may take the form of a drive toward the thin, the muscular, or lean body figure ideal, which all hold the potential to impel an experience of body appearance pressure and body dissatisfaction. The aim of this study was to explore figure idealization, body dissatisfaction, and experience of BAP in fitness instructors.Materials and MethodsFitness instructors, 70 males and 236 females, were (...)

Exercise Dependence and Body Image Concerns Amongst Group Fitness Instructors: A Self-Determination Theory Approach.Michael S. Reinboth, Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen & Solfrid Bratland-Sanda - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
IntroductionDespite the fact that group fitness instructors serve as significant role models with potentially great impact on class participants' motivation for exercise, they are a very under-researched group. The aim of this study was therefore to examine group fitness instructors' motivational regulations for exercise, and how these motivational regulations can predict symptoms of exercise dependence and body image concerns.MethodsGroup fitness instructors from the largest fitness companies in Norway completed an online survey with reference to the Situational Motivation Scale, the Exercise (...)

The Healthy Body Image Intervention and Reduction in Eating Disorder Symptomatology and Muscle Building Supplement Use in High School Students: A Study of Mediating Factors.Kethe Marie Engen Svantorp-Tveiten, Andreas Ivarsson, Monica Klungland Torstveit, Christine Sundgot-Borgen, Therese Fostervold Mathisen, Solfrid Bratland-Sanda, Jan Harald Rosenvinge, Oddgeir Friborg, Gunn Pettersen & Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
BackgroundMediation analysis is important to test the theoretical framework underpinning an intervention. We therefore aimed to investigate if the healthy body image intervention’s effect on eating disorder symptomatology and use of muscle building supplements was mediated by the change in risk and protective factors for ED development and muscle building supplement use.MethodsThis study used data from the HBI intervention: a cluster randomized controlled universal intervention aiming to promote positive body image and embodiment and reduce the risk for ED development including (...)

Application of Transcendental Bernstein Polynomials for Solving Two-Dimensional Fractional Optimal Control Problems.Fateme Ghomanjani, Samad Noeiaghdam & Sanda Micula - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-10.
The aim of this study is to introduce a novel method to solve a class of two-dimensional fractional optimal control problems. Since there are some difficulties solving these problems using analytical methods, thus finding numerical methods to approximate their solution is a challenging topic. In this study, we use transcendental Bernstein series. In fact, for solving the problem, we generalize the Bernstein polynomials to a larger class of functions which can provide more accurate approximate solutions. The convergence theorem is proved. (...)
