This article presents the contributions of Paulo Freire to think about children's education. It breaks with a certain understanding that Freire would have been concerned only with the education of young people and adults. It is an essay that discusses the concept of child and childhood in Freire and the proposition of a pedagogy forged with children, a “girl” pedagogy.

Por incorporar a esperança na pedagogia crítica para, um só tempo, humanizar radicalmente a educação e transformar a sociedade, ele faz aumentar nossas expectativas sobre o que são capazes de fazer uma teoria e uma pedagogia ao construir um caminho que demonstra a indissociabilidade de ordem teórica e prática.

O artigo aborda a noção de sujeito de direitos humanos como central nos processos educativos de modo a entender a educação em direitos humanos não como uma tarefa ou uma atividade específica dentro da educação em geral, mas como parte substantivamente integrante da educação em geral. A formação do sujeito de direitos humanos é tarefa da educação como formação atual e presente, dado que os participantes dos processos educativos não só se preparam para ser sujeitos, mas podem experienciar o ser (...) sujeito no próprio processo educativo. Ou seja, o sentido fundamental da educação em direitos humanos está em promover processos multidimensionais e comuns que colaborem para que os seres humanos se façam sujeitos de direitos humanos. Para isso, buscará desenhar as bases ético-filosóficas que possam dar sustentação a esta compreensão, com o auxílio de referências filosóficas, éticas e pedagógicas, particularmente de Paulo Freire e Enrique Dussel. Jacob Neumann provides a thoughtful reading of Paulo Freire in the 21st century: Education, dialogue, and transformation. His comments on the importance of contextualising Freire’s work and the value of openness in engaging Freirean ideas are insightful and helpful. His use of the term ‘apolitical’ is, however, rather more problematic. The article contributes to the academic discussion on Paulo Freire’s pedagogical thinking as a basis for reinventing contemporary non-formal education. In Finland, Freire’s transformational/liberatory theory of adult learning was applied as a framework for developing an adult educational model called Life Skills for All. The pilot project’s case studies were carried out with different groups of people during the model’s development phase. We describe these cases and discuss what can be learned from them for offering basic and life skills (...) education for adult groups at risk of social disenfranchisement. Our case study analysis highlights some new practices and challenges based on the model’s different applications. We argue that even for basic capacity building of employment skills, it is essential to develop a non-instrumental, holistic, and societal educational approach. Elements for such an approach can be derived from both the Nordic and Freirean traditions of adult education. Also, we suggest that the Life Skills for All model benefits learners’ agency and empowerment by putting the learner at the center, combining the learning of different basic skills, and emphasizing the central role of the local community in participants’ learning activities. Neste artigo, analisamos os desafios historiográficos relacionados à produção de biografias no âmbito da História da Ciência. Em especial, discutimos as ideias apresentadas pelo historiador francês Jacques Le Goff em seu livro São Luís, publicado em 1996. Essa análise, de natureza teórica e metodológica, é cotejada com o esboço panorâmico da biografia do físico norte-americano David Bohm, recentemente publicada sob o título David Bohm – A Life Dedicated to Understanding the Quantum World. Paulo Freire, uno de los teóricos brasileños más importantes en la historia de la educación, dejó un legado que hasta hoy inspira y orienta prácticas en diferentes áreas del conocimiento. Así, este texto sitúa las contribuciones de la filosofía freiriana y la educación popular a la educación social en desarrollo en Brasil.

Paulo Freire está hoje no meio de uma acirrada disputa ideológica. Mas este não é um livro sobre a ideologia ou a política partidária de Paulo Freire. Aqui não se entende por política o que se faz dentro da lógica do sistema democrático representativo, mas sim, num sentido mais amplo, o modo como se exerce o poder nas relações estabelecidas com outros e outras numa trama social e, mais especificamente, os modos de exercer o poder ao ensinar e (...) aprender. Paulo Freire nos ajuda a pensar as possibilidades da filosofia em conexão muito próxima com a educação e a política. E é nesse sentido que ele é um filósofo: pela forma como faz de sua vida um problema filosófico e de sua filosofia uma questão existencial na busca de um mundo sem opressores e oprimidos. Nesse contexto, o livro é construído em torno de cinco princípios inspirados na vida de Paulo Freire: a vida (como inseparável de qualquer prática educativa); a igualdade (no início, como pressuposto, e não como finalidade da educação); o amor (não apenas pelas pessoas, mas também pela posição educadora que se ocupa); a errância (no duplo sentido de equivocar-se e de viajar sem destino predeterminado) e a infância (como impulso vital, e não apenas idade cronológica). Este artigo analisa as estratégias de linguagem radiofônica em três séries de reportagens transmitidas pela Rádio Eldorado de São Paulo em 2008. O objetivo é compreender de que maneira os sons ambiente, os efeitos sonoros, a entonação, as trilhas e o silêncio foram utilizados pelos jornalistas da emissora nas séries “Os Jovens Quarentões”, “A Cidade que Não Anda” e “São Paulo: Capital da Pluralidade”. Entre os principais resultados do estudo estão a não utilização do silêncio, a adoção unânime (...) da trilha e a predominância da função expressiva da estética acústica em detrimento da descritiva nestes especiais. Mediante el análisis de las categorías: educación bancaria, educación liberadora y método pedagógico, planteadas por Paulo Freire, se reconoce que la primera deshumaniza a los sujetos que requieren ser emancipados, la segunda constituye el espacio para el desarrollo de una conciencia crítica, y mediante la tercera es posible la concientización en aras de una verdadera transformación social.

In several enigmatic passages, Paulo Freire describes the pedagogy of the oppressed as a ‘pedagogy of laughter’. The inclusion of laughter alongside problem‐posing dialogue might strike some as ambiguous, considering that the global exploitation of the poor is no laughing matter. And yet, laughter seems to be an important aspect of the pedagogy of the oppressed. In this paper, I examine the role of laughter in Freire's critical pedagogy through a series of questions: Are all forms of laughter equally (...) emancipatory? Certainly a revolutionary pedagogue can laugh, but should he or she, and what are the political (if not revolutionary) implications of this laughter? In order to shed new light on Freire's fleeting yet provocative comments, I turn to Jacques Rancière for his emphasis on the aesthetics of politics, and Paulo Virno who connects joke telling with critical theory. Overall, I argue that we need to take Freire's gesture toward a pedagogy of laughter seriously in order to understand the aesthetics of critical pedagogy and the fundamental need for a redistribution of the sensible that underlies educational relations between masters and pupils. Freire is one of the most powerful voices challenging the hegemony of bureaucratic and banking educational systems. His voice was particularly influential impacting revolutionary processes and progressive social movements while at the same time learning from their practices. Presenting an analytical and critical study of the contemporary adult educator, Paulo Freire, this book deals with all aspects of his thought, placing at the centre of consideration his educational philosophy.

This paper is an attempt to connect the Brazilian Paulo Freire’s well known educational thinking with the “philosophy for children” movement. It considers the relationship between the creator of philosophy for children, Matthew Lipman and Freire through different attempts to establish a relationship between these two educators. The paper shows that the relationship between them is not as close as many supporters of P4C have claimed, especially in Latin America. It also considers the context of Educational Policies in our (...) time and why Freire’s understanding of the politics of education makes it impossible to be Freirean and at the same time be neutral or favorable to the actual status quo. Finally, after presenting Lipman’s understanding of the relationship between philosophy, education and democracy and their connection to capitalism, it proposes ways to begin the political path of philosophizing with children inspired by Paulo Freire’s educational thinking. A critique of Freire's thinking, the influence of his work and ways in which his theories may be developed into the future.

In this article, I argue that Paulo Freire’s liberatory conception of education is interesting, challenging, even transforming because central to it are important aspects of education which other philosophers marginalise. I also argue that Freire’s critics are right when they claim that he paid insufficient attention to another important aspect of education. Finally, I argue for a conception of education which takes account of the strengths and at the same time overcomes the limitations of Freire’s liberatory conception.

This contribution to the special issue is an historical account of Paulo Freire’s pedagogical and administrative praxis before his forced exile in 1964. It relies on interviews collected during a field trip in 1976, a conversation with Paulo Freire in Geneva one year later and on the secondary literature up to date. Being the head of the first Extension Service of a major Brazilian university in the early 1960s gave Freire and his collaborators the space and time to (...) experiment with the today world famous literacy method bearing his name. The concept of ‘Field of Cultural Production’ (Bourdieu) is used to elucidate better Freire and his team’s avant-gardist production within the spaces opened up by Brazil’s popular movements in the early sixties. The contribution shows how the ‘Paulo Freire System’ developed in the praxis of a cultural movement and received its academic consecration in an incremental and eclectic style. (shrink)

Paulo Freire is one of the century's great thinkers on education and the politics of liberation. Known mostly for his literacy campaigns in Latin America and Africa, and for his seminal work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, his thinking continues to be rediscovered by generations of teachers, scholars, community activists and cultural workers in Europe and North America. While his name is synonymous with the practice of Critical Literacy' and A Pedagogy of Liberation', his work has been appropiated in many (...) diverse fields of discipline and site-based projects of social reform. This volume represents a pathfinding analysis of Freires work and in many cases it offers an extension of his thinking in order to make it more applicable to first world contexts. Peter McLaren and Peter Leonard have brought together a divergent group of scholars widely recognized for their contributions to critical theory and critical pedagogy. Themes addressed include Freier's relation to feminist critique, his philosophical roots and an evaluation of his ideas from postmodernist and postcolonialist perspectives. Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire, best known for his work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, challenged education plans that contributed to the marginalization of minorities and the poor. Freire believed that education should be used for liberation by helping learners reflect on their experiences historically, giving immediate reality to issues of racism, sexism, and the exploitation of workers. Known as one of the most influential theoretical innovators of the twentieth century, his views have left a significant mark on progressive thinkers about (...) education and liberation. Reinventing Paulo Freire is an homage to him by protégé Antonia Darder. Here, she explores the legacy of Freire, interviews eight former students who studied him-- now teachers themselves, and reflects on the teaching practice as demonstrated by Freire himself. In the so-called digital culture, there is a constant presence of radical transformations on the cognitive and affective dimensions of the relations established among teachers and students. Upon this ubiquitous accessibility of information, the very historical and hierarchically verticalized relation between teachers and students has been increasingly questioned. Upon this situation, the authors in this article aim at stating that the revitalization of concepts developed by Paulo Freire, mainly the ones discussed in the books: ‘Pedagogy of Hope’, that sought (...) a re-encounter with ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’, ‘Extension or Communication’ and ‘Pedagogy of Freedom’ became essential to understanding how the relationship between teachers and students can be mutually re-signified. In these times of digital culture, we argue that the revitalization of the critical thinking proposed by Freire is able to foment a dialogical communication both in the pedagogical link shared by teachers and students and in the transformation of information into substantially and ethically experienced concepts. Such substantial and ethical experiences are the ones able to attest that the pedagogy of hope and the pedagogy of freedom are possible, provided they are constituted with the students and not for them. Au-delà de nos répétitifs "méthode Paulo Freire", "conscientisation" et "pédagogie bancaire", qui est Paulo Freire? Qu'en est-il de sa pensée? Comment s'en ressaisir depuis la France? Cette enquête, radicalement inscrite dans le champ de la philosophie de l'éducation et l'histoire des idées éducatives, tente d'appréhender le pédagogue Paulo Freire dans sa totalité. Il s'agit de dépasser les évidences, de se les réapproprier sous un angle moins commun et de faire connaître ces parts d'inconnu que couvre la pensée (...) de Paulo Freire. Car jusqu'alors, force est de constater qu'en France, les seuls à s'être hasardés à l'étude de son oeuvre en sont restés à une lecture didactique, sans analyser plus profondément toute la composition syncrétique de sa pensée, ses tensions, ses paradoxes. C'est dans ces bizarreries comprises de façon rigoureuse que peut entr'apparaître, aux yeux de leurs examinateurs, tout le génie du pédagogue. O livro Paulo Freire: uma arqueologia bibliográfica é fruto de um denso esforço investigativo que reuniu pesquisadores(as) brasileiros(as) sobre o pensamento freireano, buscando analisar e evidenciar o conjunto de influências presentes em sua obra. Na forma de uma arqueologia, escava o conjunto de escritos de Freire desde o final dos anos de 1950, até as obras publicadas postumamente. Como resultado, elenca e analisa no formato de verbetes 501 presenças identificadas nos seus livros, incluindo autores e autoras, instituições, pessoas, lugares (...) e fatos históricos, proporcionando aos leitores e às leitoras um amplo panorama teórico e conceitual do seu pensamento político e pedagógico. Portanto, este livro é indicada a estudantes, pesquisadores e demais interessados em compreender a complexa e densa estrutura teórica que Paulo Freire consolidou em seus mais de 30 livros publicados. A expressão “Arqueologia bibliográfica” pretende remeter à compreensão que o próprio Paulo Freire tinha da consciência, respectivamente da conscientização, como uma construção histórica composta por complexas tramas que se relacionam de muitas formas, ora se contrapondo, ora se complementando ou confirmando, todas elas compondo um estar-no-mundo único. O livro apresenta instrumentos que auxiliam a encontrar peças e rastros deixados nas páginas por esse nosso grande educador, que inspirem olhares mais profundos e mais largos sobre a educação em nosso tempo. In the article, we carry out a theoretical reflection on the contributions of Paulo Freire's pedagogy. Given the diversity of themes that Freire covers, we make a first approach to his pedagogical-political thought and for this we do it through a brief biographical journey through the main life stages of the author. The great Brazilian educator was a person who had a special concern for the other, for denouncing injustices and for showing us that human beings have in our (...) hands the possibilities of change and transformation. In order to address all these questions, according to Freire, it is necessary to do so from a critical reading of the world in which we live. To delve deeper and understand essential aspects of his life and also of his work, we do so with people close to the author who have had the opportunity to live and work with him and know, in depth, his pedagogical legacy. As a result of this journey through his pedagogical work, we offer some reflections that invite us to look at the validity and timeliness of his approaches. Freire's pedagogy proposes a critical reading of the world that does not generate hopelessness, but rather allows us to see the resistance, the ways to get ahead, the construction of the new, the permanent possibilities that human beings have to rebuild our lives. Freire spoke of hope as an inherent issue in teaching practice, remembering, at the same time, that change, although difficult, is possible. (shrink)

Whither the seminal thinking and practice of Paulo Freire in contemporary times? If Covid 19 is the most seismic health crisis in living memory, it is also just as much an unprecedented crisis for education and society. While Paulo Freire's work so often calls attention to the deprivations and exploitations suffered by the weakest in our society, at no stage does Freire's work succumb to a negativism or a pessimism about the possibilities of transformation. To the contrary, Freire's (...) work is always animated by a strong and fundamental affirmative spirit which calls on people to join together to make change, as opposed to simply waiting around for it to happen. This text on Freire's contemporary importance thus seems a timely intervention. Originally a conversation between engaged interlocutors at a University of Catania symposium, this discussion then broadens out to include connection to the particular rendering of these issues across different national and international contexts. Including essays by established and new thinkers in the Critical Pedagogy perspective, the book also includes up to date and exciting interviews with contemporary practitioners of Theatre of the Oppressed and related social-therapeutic approaches in Italy. Rivers of ink have flowed through the comments and interpretations that were made about Paulo Freire's writings and, in good time, never enough. The intention of the present text is not to do the same, but rather to confront Freire's thought with a reality that he did not live with the intensity of the current era, typical of the spirit of a financially based, speculative and parasitic capitalism, globalized and neoliberal, of social and dystopian distancing with high technology, colonizer (...) and predator, racial and patriarchal. We point out this spirit without specifically engaging in it, although we consider it as the basis for taking off our plot display. Paulo Freire, preocupado por una educación que salga al encuentro del pueblo que estaba emergiendo como sujeto político y de su historia, en la apertura democrática que atravesaba Brasil, avanzó hacia una lectura estratégica de fuentes europeas y de su tradición. Entabló un diálogo crítico, para la construcción de una teoría del ser humano, con el existencialismo, marxismo, fenomenología y la Escuela de Frankfurt. El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es analizar la categoría de conciencia crítica presente en este modelo (...) antropológico, sus implicancias y relaciones con otras categorías fundamentales del mismo. Esta indagación la proponemos en diálogo y debate con las problemáticas centrales del pensamiento filosófico latinoamericano, que dan cuenta de los principales procesos de emancipación de América Latina, y nos permiten operar interrupciones a la filosofía de raíz eurocéntrica. En consecuencia, consideramos que nuestro enfoque, desde una perspectiva del pensamiento latinoamericano crítico, nos permitirá una comprensión más acabada de una de las preocupaciones que atraviesan toda la obra de Freire: la constante lucha por una educación libre de alienación, que respete la “vocación ontológica del ser humano de ser más”. The development of this paper is presented in two moments. In the first, the analysis of the literacy method of master Paulo Freire is made. However, he ceases to be approached as a simple set of reading and writing techniques to highlight the “anthropological, ethical and political proposal to rescue the ontological vocation of men and women, which, among others, materializes in the right to read world. In the second, the focus is on the relationships between Freire's pedagogical thinking (...) and the theory of Brazilian nationalism-developmentalism developed within the ISEB in the period between 1959 and 1964. The central argument is that Paulo Freire's position is opposed to that of the elites, to the closed society and identified with the nuances of conservative populism that massifies, fanatizes and prevents the simple men from being participants and agents of the transformation process that they consider fundamental; the education proposed was essentially transformative and liberating. Throughout the development of the text, the importance of Paulo Freire and the reasons for occupying this prominent place in the history of Brazilian and world education are always emphasized.
