In the history of Chinese philosophy, Mozi calls music a “waste of resources,” considering it an aristocratic extravagance that does not benefit the everyday people. In its defense, Confucians highlight music’s moral and metaphysical qualities, arguing that music aids in moral cultivation and that music’s form mimics the structure of reality. The aim of this paper is to show that Korean philosophers provide yet another reason to think music is important. Music, and art in general, was used to express (...) a national identity at a time Korean philosophers were beginning to develop their own aesthetic consciousness in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A cultural movement called Joseonpoong (조선풍), “Joseon wind”, marked a shift away from Sinocentrism and towards Korea’s own unique value and practices. The new attempt to justify art’s value apart from its relationship to morality or metaphysics set Joseon thinkers apart from their Chinese predecessors. Using art for identity expression allowed the Koreans to reconceive art’s value while Sinocentric cosmological and cultural views were being challenged with the introduction of western knowledge. Art also became a tool for reversing hermeneutic injustice as new artistic practices and standards allowed the Koreans to meaningfully engage with previously neglected aspects of their lived lives. In this essay, I discuss Korean artists’ multi-layered, internal motives for engaging in artistic practices: their artistic devotion derives from their desires for moral self-cultivation, self-enjoyment, and self-forgetting. I speculate that these tendencies were intensified in Korean cultural traditions by distinctive sociopolitical circumstances of the Joseon period under the dominance of Neo-Confucianism, such as a fixed social hierarchy and Sino-centrist perspectives. Korean Naturalism focuses on inner discipline by taking nature as a criterion. In this context, at the core of Korean aesthetic consciousness are inner virtues beyond superficial beauty. It may be too radical to apply Korean Naturalism to the current practice of new-media art. Nevertheless, some contemporary artists who attempt to bring back Korean tradition from a new perspective experiment with Korean Naturalism. In this study, I consider the method and concept those artists pursue as (...) evolved Naturalism with new media and a new zeitgeist. When a classic Korean painting transforms into a moving image, it is possible to experience an inward immersion and contemplation through the calm instilled in dynamism. In addition, through the installation art that intentionally composes a blank space, visitors can viscerally experience the space and unconsciously fill it with their narratives. The present-day artist's task is to correctly interpret the message contained in the tradition, rather than imitate the appearance of traditional art without the spirit. The artist should inculcate this attitude to accomplish historical continuity, which is an essential element for experimenting with conventional Korean artworks and aesthetic consciousness. (shrink)

First, this article critically re-examines the recent neo-Tocquevillian praise for social capital in light of Tocqueville’s original idea on the art of association, and reveals the liberal-individualistic assumption behind them, with which Confucian-Koreans are culturally unfamiliar. This article gives an overview of Buddhist-oriented meditation techniques that were integrated with art projects for four and five year old kindergarten children at Dong Guk Kindergarten, Gyeongju City, South Korea. The article assesses the effect of this program on the creatvitiy levels of the children.

Aesthetics is not a subject usually associated with North Korea in Western scholarship, the usual tropes being autocracy, counterfeiting, drugs, human-rights abuse, famine, nuclear weapons, party-military dictatorship, Stalinism, and totalitarianism. Where the arts are concerned, they are typically seen as crude political propaganda. Korean art and music have a long history, but aesthetic research on them has only been around for a little over a hundred years. Critiques and discourses on traditional arts such as poetry, calligraphy, and painting can be traced back to the Joseon or even Goryeo dynasties, but the modern discussion on the common features of Korean aesthetics was conducted much later than that in Western Europe, where the field of aesthetics was established in the mid to late (...) eighteenth century. Early aestheticists who tried to explain aesthetic consciousness in Korean culture and art converged on the concept of Jayeon, which can be translated provisionally as “nature,” seemingly diverging from western aesthetics’ focus on the concept of “beauty.” Jayeon shares the same Chinese characters as ziran, an early Daoist concept, but jayeon in a Korean aesthetic context does not appear to be limited to the connotation of its Chinese origin. The long Japanese tradition of Korean ceramics appreciation, closely associated with the Zen tea ceremony _(chanoyu), _has played an important role in the development of Korean aesthetics in the twentieth century. The art critic and philosopher Yanagi Soetsu was instrumental in this process during the occupation period, since, continuing in this tradition, he particularly valued Joseon ceramics for their aesthetic qualities - such as naturalness, nonchalance, and simplicity - akin to praised values in Zen Buddhism. Yanagi’s pioneering writings (...) might have been influential in the prevalence of those traits when defining Korean art and aesthetics in general. After a brief presentation of key expressions defining Korean art and aesthetics, the paper focuses on Yanagi’s aesthetic assessment of Joseon ceramics and particularly on his proposal of its appreciation beyond the modern Western division between art and craft. 본 논문은 여성주의적 실천의 한 방식으로서 장소 특정적 예술이 가질 수 있는 가능성을 미학적 관점에서 탐구하는 것을 목표로 한다. 현대예술의 일반적인 형식중의 하나로서 자리잡은 장소특정적 예술은, 장소라는 요소가 비판적 예술 실천(수행)에서 어떻게 문제적이 되는지 장소적 실천 일반에 대해서 시사하는 바가 크다. 그 중에서도 본 논문은 장소와 여성주의적 실천의 관계를 다루며, 이를 위해, 2000년대 이후 한국 여성예술가의 네 개의 장소특정적 예술들 - 예술가의 서사와 담론이 중심이 되어 장소화나 특정 장소 선정이 이루어지는 두 가지 경우, 특정 지역 관련 기획전시의 경우, 특정 지역연구 (...) 프로젝트의 경우-을 대표 사례로 고려하였다.BR 모더니즘 예술의 매체 특정성과 대조적으로, 장소 특정성은 예술이 놓여있는 사회제도적 장소에 대한 의식과 질문이 주요동기가 되기 때문에, 비판적 문화실천으로서 여성주의적 실천의 가능성이 탐색될 수 있다. 예술에서의 장소특정성이 여성주의적 실천으로 기능하기 위해서 우선적으로 선행되어야 할 것은 장소 혹은 장소정체성이라는 개념에 대한 재해석이다. 장소란 특정 지리적 입지에 교차하는 다양한 사회적 관계라는 비판지리학자 매시Massey의 주장에 따른다면, 장소를 재구성하고 재해석하는 행위는 모두 정치적 행위이며, 예술에서 지역적 정체성이라는 요소의 활용 역시 젠더나 인종, 지역 문제에 대한 진보적 실천의 방식이 될 수 있다. 여성주의적으로 의미있는 장소적 예술실천에서 중요한 것은 이처럼, 우선적으로는 관계적 장소개념에 의해 기존의 지역정체성이 역사적으로 어떻게 구성되었는지의 해체와 재해석, 즉 특정 장소 정체성에 대한 여성주의적 관점에서의 적극적 재해석이다. 또한 장소특정적 예술의 많은 형태가 특정 장소나 지역 연구프로젝트라는 특수한 예술 형식과 관련된다. 이같은 지역연구 프로젝트는 여성예술가(집단)가 그 지역 정체성을 재해석하는 것 뿐 아니라, 그 지역에 살고 있는 여성 공동체의 삶에 개입하게 된다. 따라서 장소특정적 실천이 여성주의적으로서 유의미하게 위해 중요한 두 번째 요소는, 타자로서의 예술가가 지역 공동체와 관계함에 있어 어떤 위치를 취하고 어떤 방식을 택할 것인가에 대한 미학적, 윤리학적 성찰이라고 할 수 있다. In the 1960s, there were efforts to move broadcast television in the direction of the experimental video art by altering television's conventional format. Fred Barzyk, in his role as a producer and director at WGBH-TV in Boston, was uniquely positioned to act as a link between television and experimental video artists who normally would not have had access to the technology available at a major broadcast facility. As the leading innovator in the beginnings of video art, the Korean American (...) Nam June Paik (1932-2006) deserves special mention. His work bridges the worlds of art, video technology, and television. The video works of Nan June Paik, Amy Greenfield, Peter Campus, Feng Meng Bo, Elizabeth Sussman and other video artists are considered in this essay as key contributors to the development of video art. The selection is based on my experience with the artists cited. Despite video art's growing popularity among contemporary artists in the 1970s and beyond, the museums were slow to acknowledge this development. One of the problems was deciding where, among the existing museum collections, to locate video art. In its 50 some years of history, video art has enjoyed a remarkable success in its artistic innovations while undergoing changes in formats virtually at the speed of rapid advances in electronic visual technology. Ironically, the legacy of creative television set in motion by Barzyk and his generation has been largely coopted by the television broadcasting industry, which mainly serves as a platform for mass media advertising. Within minority groups searching for their cultural identity, establishing self-identity is an important process. For various psychological and sociological reasons, artists seem inspired to seek deeper meaning (...) and a broader participation in cultural work.1 Asian American women artists, in particular, are currently making art as a means of exploring self-identity, cultural identity, and gender issues. Korean/Korean American minority women artists are creating art as a reaction to their cultural upbringing, which questions issues of identity, gender, ethnicity, politics, cultural, and socioeconomic status. These contemporary artists are breaking away from traditional cultural expectations and overcoming social barriers as artists, women, and Koreans/Korean Americans. With the growing public awareness of women's consciousness and sense of self as women in Korea and as an ethnic minority in America, these artists are redefining their identity. Despite the traditional patriarchal Confucian hierarchy; lack of social, institutional, and political support; and stereotypic gender, cultural, and socioeconomic status expectations for women, a few have stepped out of their traditional roles as women and have become successful artists in Korea and America.The artworks of these artists are worthy of investigation because they appear to be a culturally, socially, and politically motivated artistic expression of the complex multifaceted Korean/Korean American life experiences as women and as Korean immigrant members of a cultural (ethnic) minority in American society. Therefore, two main research questions can be posed: [End Page 71]• Given that art can be constructed out of layers of different experiences and influences, to what extent do the dimensions of cultural identity, self-identity, and gender interweave and contribute to the function of art as a political act for Korean/Korean American women artists?• How do Korean/Korean American cultural, social, and female experiences influence the artistic expression of Korean/Korean American women artists?In order to answer these questions, I selected case study methodology2 and adapted elements of interpretive biography,3 and narrative approaches as developed by Wallace and Gruber.4 According to Denzin,5 interpretive biography involves the collection and analysis of personal experiences, life documents, stories, accounts, and narratives that describe turning-point moments in individuals' lives. Denzin argues that personal experiences and personal stories are derived from a larger cultural, ideological, and historical context. The intent of the biographical project is to problematize the social, economic, cultural, structural, and historical forces that shape, distort, and otherwise alter lived experiences.By using narrative case study methods, I explore elements of self-identity formation, cultural identity, gender issues, personal thoughts, artistic expression, meaning of artworks, professional achievement, and life circumstances. I examine each participant's life in the Korean and American historical, cultural, social, and political environments. I interpret participants' outer lives (what they do) and inner lives (feelings, thoughts, inner self) to capture their deep, profound life experiences. I examine salient themes of their art expression and how the role of art and artistic activity is a part of political, cultural, social, and feminist activism. I further investigate their professional activities in order to identify the multiple roles that contribute to personal and professional identity formation.For the purpose of this study, I selected the contemporary Korean woman artist Suk Nam Yun and the contemporary Korean American woman artist Yong Soon Min as primary participants. These two women artists, despite many social and cultural barriers, chose to become artists; feminists; and social, cultural, and political activists; in addition to fulfilling traditional Korean family and domestic roles. A metaphor is an effective way to show how something is to be conceived. In this article, I look at two Neo-Confucian Korean philosophical contexts—the Four-Seven debate and Book of the Imperial Pivot—and suggest that metaphors are philosophically expedient in two further contexts: when both intellect and emotion must be addressed; and when the aim of philosophizing is to produce behavioral change. Because Neo-Confucians had a conception of the mind that closely connected it to the heart (心 xin), metaphor’s (...) empathy-inducing and perspective-giving capacities made it an especially helpful mode of philosophizing in the history of Korean philosophy. Abstract:This essay addresses the largely unrecognized art of a former comfort woman, Duk-kyung Kang (1929–1997). Comfort women were forced sexual slaves for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. By analyzing how both postcolonial and decolonial aesthetics are embodied in her paintings, the potential of her art to challenge colonialism becomes pronounced.

The genre of fable tends to be overlooked in the study of Korean literary history on the ground that the genre seems too archaic to reflect the aesthetic standards established in the modern European novel, in which the focus lies in the realistic representation of the individual or contemporary society. However, the genre was not completely abandoned by modern Korean writers. Few critics have noted the continuing role played by the rich Korean fable tradition, which eventually made (...) the reinvention of the genre in the mass media possible. In particular, it is worth noting that there was the emergence of a new subgenre of fable in the late nineteenth century: that is, fabulous court case fiction, which is quite distinct from the Chinese literary tradition that had underprivileged imaginative narrative texts under the absolute domination of Confucian historiography. The genre of fabulous court case fiction makes us reconsider the plurality of narrative forms and various narrative functions. In this study, I examine how imaginative narrative texts such as fables simultaneously pursue the pleasure of storytelling and the purposes of both moral and specialized education. (shrink)

본고의 목적은 고전의 가치를 지닌 존 헨리 뉴먼의 『대학의 이념』이 다루고 있는 중요한 주제들을 요약해서 소개하고, 이를 통해서 오늘날 한국 가톨릭대학교들의 현실을 진단함과 동시에 미래의 발전 전망들을 가늠해보는 것이다. 본론의 첫째 부분은, 뉴먼이 다루고 있는 주제들 중에서 오늘날 여전히 시의성을 지니고 있는 네 가지 주제들을 소개하는 것이다: 가톨릭대학교의 설립목적, 학문으로서의 신학의 통합적 역할, 자유교양교육의 중요성, 가톨릭 인본주의에 입각한 교회의 의무. 이어서 둘째 부분에서는, 뉴먼의 저서에 대한 현대 미국의 대학교육자들의 견해를 소개하는 것인데, 이는 오늘날 대학의 문제 역시 세계화의 맥락에서 반성될 수 (...) 있는 것이기에 우리 현실을 진단하는데 참고하기 위한 것이다. 마지막으로는, 이상의 내용을 토대로 해서 필자가 생각하기에 한국의 가톨릭대학교들이 비전을 세움에 있어서 고려해야 할 사항들을 열거하였다: 가톨릭대학교의 정체성을 드러내는 통합적 비전과 차별성, 교육의 중요성, 교양교육과 전문교육 사이의 균형, 대학의 연구 기능이 실천적인 문제들과 연관성을 확보하는 일, 온라인 교육의 확장 추세와 관련해서 양적 성장보다는 내실화를 기하는 일의 중요성 등이 그것들이다. 결론에서는, 재정건전화의 가능성과 가톨릭대학인들 사이의 연대에 대해서 일언하였다. This study aimed to meta-analyze the relationship between self-management and exercise self-confidence, satisfaction, and commitment in both modern and traditional martial arts among Korean practitioners. We examined the level of sports participation and different martial arts sports as potential moderating variables. In total, 22 studies yielded 299 individual effect sizes and were included in the final meta-analytic pool. The analyses revealed a moderate effect of self-management on exercise satisfaction and self-confidence; and a large effect self-management on exercise commitment. Especially, (...) the effect of the training dimension of self-management was large on exercise commitment and satisfaction, while that of the mental dimension was large on exercise self-confidence. The effects of self-management on exercise satisfaction, commitment, and self-confidence were large in judo, Ssireum, and wrestling, respectively. Finally, the use of self-management was relatively more effective for non-elite participants than for elite practitioners. Our results highlight the effectiveness of self-management to enhance Korean martial arts practitioners’ exercise self-confidence, commitment, and satisfaction, findings that may potentially be extended internationally and to other types of sports; further, they showcase the importance of the promotion of interventions and educational programs on how to incorporate/employ self-management in athletes’ sports training. While the writing is in fine style, there are too many occasions where the reader may be hampered by having to pause to reconsider what was stated, especially in some of the longer sentences, or because a dictionary consultation is warranted.Nevertheless, this is a must-read for voice and instrumental students and their teachers, coaches, and accompanists. Moreover, this book is a must-read for anyone working with performing artists; Howard covers the performance arts broadly, including theatre and dance as well. If you only surmise what virtuosity is, you will become intimately aware of its meaning and all its ramifications.Its casual use suggests that virtuosity can be found everywhere, from auto mechanics to baristas and even include, as Howard describes, cheetahs on the hunt and the kill. 이 연구는 공공성과 관련된 세 가지 개념인 한계, 경계, 임계 개념을 비교하는 것에서 시작한다. 공공성을 상상할 수 있는 개별 주체의 비판적 능력에 대해 ‘한계’ 개념을 적용할 수 있고, 그러한 주체들이 비판적으로 서로의 인식을 점검하는 과정에 대해서는 ‘경계’ 개념을 적용할 수 있다. 소위 공공성은 이 상호성이 성립되는 경계 개념부터 등장하는데, 주체와 타자가 서로 대등한 관계에서 공공성을 형성하므로, 경계 개념이 적용되는 공공성을 대칭적 공공성이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 개인의 비판적 인식과 그 인식의 상호 점검을 넘어서는 또 다른 인식 방법이 있다. 소위 타자 (...) 중심의 인식으로서, 타자의 등장으로 인해 주체의 인식 능력이 무력화되는 데서 출발하는 인식이다. 이 연구는 이를 ‘임계’라는 개념으로 규정한다. 배제되어 취약한 타자들이 기존 권리 주체들에게 제기하는 공적 긴장을 임계적 공공성이라 한다. 임계적 공공성은 비대칭적 관계에서 출발한다. 이 연구는 임계적 공공성을 근본적 공공성으로 간주한 후, 이를 공공예술을 위한 토대로 삼는다.BR 공공예술은 기존 예술계의 자장을 넘어 일상의 공적 장소와 가치에 개입하고, 새로운 공적 가치를 창출하기 위해 예술을 수단으로 삼는다. 최근 새로운 예술 사조로 급부상한 공공예술은 예술적 완성도도 중요하지만, 예술적 개입이 창출한 공적 효과나 가치에 더 무게를 둔다. 공공예술은 자신의 작업이 얼마나 공적인 특성을 가지고 있느냐에 따라 그 성/패가 좌우된다. 따라서 공공예술은 공공성에 대한 고려 없이 공공예술의 미적 가치를 비평할 수 없다. 이 연구는 다양한 공공예술의 사례를 들어 공공예술과 임계적 공공성의 관계를 추적한 후, 공공예술의 미학에서 핵심이 되어야 할 개념을 추출한다. 일찍이 공공예술과 관련하여 비평적 접근은 있었으나, 미학 이론적 접근은 없었다는 점에서, 그리고 공공예술과 공공성의 관계를 추적해온 연구자의 기존 연구를 종합하여 공공예술의 미학을 구축하기 위한 첫 시도라는 점에서, 이 연구는 나름의 의의를 갖는다. 이 논문은 하버마스의 예술 공론장과 단토의 이론을 발전시킨 디키의 예술계 개념과 관련된 문제를 비판적으로 비교분석하는 데 있다. 예술 공론장과 예술계는 사적 영역과 공적영역, 주체적 공중과 상대적으로 수동적인 예술대중, 예술의 안과 밖과 ‘안’에 한정이라는 차이를 보여준다. 예술 공론장의 자율성은 하버마스가 말하는 바와 달리 제한적이다. 예술공론장의 붕괴는 예술 민주주의의 시발점으로 다르게 해석 가능하다. ‘하버마스의 논의는 근대적 예술계의 총체적 행위주체에 대한 분석이 요구된다. 예술계는 새로운 전문화된 다른 형식의 예술 공론장의 성립으로 평가된다. 디키의 사회학적 시각이 배제된 ‘예술계’ 개념은 일면적인 분석에 빠지기 쉽다. 새로운 형식의 (...) 온오프 예술 공론장은 하버마스, 단토, 디키의 이론의 수정이 필요하다는 것을 시사한다. 오늘날의 예술 공론장과 예술계에 대한 논의는 하버마스와 단토 및 디키의 관점과 방법론을 유기적으로 결합할 때 좀 더 이론 생산적이 될 것이다. ‘예술의 종말’(the End of Art)과 관련된 논의에서 우리가 빠트려서는 안 되는 또 한 사람의 철학자가 있다. 그가 바로 발터 벤야민(W. Benjamin)이다. 헤겔과 단토와 마찬가지로 벤야민 역시 예술의 역사성에 주목한다. 벤야민에 따르면 예술에 대한 정의와 기능은 역사적 조건에 의존한다. 마르크스주의자로서 벤야민은 예술을 토대, 즉 당대의 기술수준의 반영물로 이해한다. 따라서 농업기반 수공업사회의 예술과 기술집약적 산업사회의 예술에 대한 정의와 역할은 다를 수밖에 없다. 벤야민은 전통적 예술과 기술적 복제시대의 예술을 구분하는 개념으로 ‘아우라’(Aura) 개념을 제시한다.BR 아우라는 전통적 예술작품의 물질적 조건인 진품성, 원본성 그리고 일회성에서 비롯된다. (...) 아우라에 근거한 예술작품은 복제품과 물질적으로 구별된다. 그러므로 예술작품은 고귀한 것이고 숭배되어야 하는 것으로 간주되었다. 그런데 19세기 후반 사진의 등장으로 대상에 대한 기술적 복제가 가능하게 되었고, 복제와 원본의 차이를 묻는 것은 무의한 것이 되었다. 사진과 영화로 대표되는 기술적 복제 예술은 인간의 감각을 재편하여 시간과 공간에 대한 새로운 이해를 가능하게 했을 뿐만 아니라, 예술과 예술작품에 대한 정의와 역할을 급진적으로 재규정한다. 벤야민은 기술적 복제 시대와 더불어 예술작품의 아우라는 종말을 고할 것으로 확신한다. 본 논문은 벤야민의 예술의 종말론을 매체철학의 관점에서 살펴보고 평가할 것이다. 이 글의 목적은 굿맨의 상징예술론에 제기되는 ‘불투명성’ 문제의 소재를 밝히고, 굿맨이 주장하는 예술의 ‘인지적 효력’을 ‘기호적 경험’의 본성에 관한 체험주의의 해명을 통해 보완하는 데 있다. 굿맨은 과학과 예술의 연속성을 주장함으로써 전통적인 미학이론과 전기 분석철학이 가정했던 의미/인지, 정서/감정의 오랜 이분법적 구도를 거부한다. 대신 우리가 예술작품을 해석할 때, 예술적 상징에는 규약적이거나 기술적인 다른 상징들과 달리 ‘미적 징후’의 현상으로 드러나는 불투명성이 있다고 강조한다. 그러나 비어즐리를 비롯한 굿맨의 비판자들은 그러한 불투명성으로 인해 예술의 가치를 ‘인지적 효력’의 관점에서 평가할 수 없게 된다고 주장한다. 특히 그들은 예술작품에서 (...) ‘예화’의 지칭체계를 적용할 때 드러나는 현저한 불투명성을 비판한다. 이 문제에 필자는 ‘기호적 경험’에 대한 체험주의의 해명을 통해, 기호적 경험이 본성상 불안정/불완전한 불투명성을 갖는다고 밝힌다. 기호적 경험은 기표의 물리적인 유한성과 기호적 ‘사상’의 본성적 파편성 때문에 필연적으로 기호의 변형과 증식, 소멸을 동반하는 기호의 ‘전이’ 현상을 낳는다. 그렇지만 체험주의적 해명에 따르면 기호적 경험은 물리적 경험에 토대를 두고 확장되며, 여기서 제공되는 물리적 경험의 ‘공공성’이 기호적 불투명성에도 불구하고 소통/해석 가능한 토대를 제공한다. 필자는 이러한 해명을 통해 굿맨이 예술의 상징체계를 통해 밝히려고 했던, 의미 창조와 이해의 중요성이 더욱 설득력 있게 보완될 수 있다고 본다. 이 논문은 윌리엄 모리스(William Morris 1834-1896)가 설립했던 모리스 상회(Morris & Co.)의 경영 철학에 대한 연구이다. 모리스는 예술이 대중화되어야 예술 문화가 향상될 수 있다는 이념을 가지고 있었고 이것은 바로 상회의 경영과 연결된다. 모리스 상회의 설립자들은 19세기 미학적 상황을 파악하고 예술을 상품화하여 ‘장식예술’로 시대를 개혁하고자 하였다. 이것은 곧 확장된 예술 개념을 실천하는 장이였다. 또한 모리스 상회의 경영 철학은 모리스의 미학과 함께 하였고 그것은 예술에 대한 새로운 지평을 여는 것이었다.BR 모리스는 자신이 모리스 상회의 경영을 맡으면서 네 가지 원칙 아래에 상회를 경영하고자 했다. 첫째, (...) ‘대중을 교육’하는 것이다. 대중 교육이라는 것은 예술성과 좋은 질의 생산품을 적절한 가격에 공급하여 대중의 미적 취미를 향상시키는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 예술생산 방식의 개선이었다. 셋째, 모든 제작품은 디자이너의 이름과 제작자의 이름을 공개했다. 이것은 예술 상품을 디자인한 디자이너의 지적 재산에 대한 존중이며 상품 제작에 참여한 노동의 가치를 존중하는 태도였다. 넷째 노동의 대가에 따른 임금 분배였다.BR 상회의 기본 원칙은 완전히 실현되지 못하였고 한계를 드러냈다. 모리스 상회의 소비자들은 부유한 사람이거나, 고등 교육을 받은 일부 사람들이었다. 임금 분배의 문제는 자본주의 시장경제 체계에 잠식당하고 있었다. 모리스는 이상적인 상회 경영을 희망했으나 절반의 성공만을 했다. 모리스가 실현하려했던 상회의 경영원칙은 이윤추구가 우선이었던 경제체계에서 완전한 성공을 거두기는 힘들었다. 그러나 상회 경영에 드러난 윤리적 태도, 노동자의 권익, 예술, 디자인, 기술의 조화 등에 대한 그의 이념은 이 시대의 지침서로서의 역할을 하고 있다. Pourtant, nous savons bien que l’air, élément indispensable pour tous les êtres vivants, est également présent autour de nous. Devrions-nous alors considérer différemment l’espace vide et l’air dans l’installation? Pour Yasuaki Onishi, sculpteur et installateur in situ, l’espace vide est un lieu essentiel pour l’installation et l’inspiration. Il s’intéresse à (...) l’invisible, à l’espace, à l’air, à l’espace négatif, etc. Il révèle ce qui est invisible, en utilisant un matériau léger tel qu’un adhésif liquide noir et le support de matériaux immatériels tels que la lumière, l’air ou d’autres matériaux intangibles. Parmi ses travaux, en particulier, en analysant les œuvres de la série Vertical Volume, Daily Distance, Gawa, Shaping Air – A Breath of Mobility et Vertical Space, nous cherchons dans cette étude la signification de l’air invisible, du ki, du svi, du wonsang et le sens du vide du Tao et du bouddhisme. Quel est le sens du vide dans une installation de Yasuaki Onishi? Et quel est l’enjeu entre l’espace vide et l’espace plein, l’espace visible et l’espace invisible, la matérialité et l’immatérialité? Dans son travail, qui ne suit pas le processus général de la sculpture traditionnelle, nous trouverons le lien avec la signification de l’espace négatif et avec le terme coréen gan, l’espace-temps, avec le mot japonais ma qui constitue un concept esthétique au Japon. When we generally speak of an empty space, this empty is not really physically empty. The empty space is filled with air, invisible matter, but it cannot be seen or captured. However, we know that air, an essential element for all living things, is also present around us. So should we consider differently the empty space and air in the installation? For Yasuaki Onishi, sculptor and installator in situ, the empty space is an essential place for installation work and inspiration. The empty space that we think is empty is filled with substances that are invisible. The empty space is filled with air, but it can’t be seen or captured. He is interested in the invisible, space, air, negative space, etc. He reveals what is invisible, using a light material such as a black liquid adhesive, with the support of non-material materials such as light, air or other intangible materials. Among his works, in particular, by analyzing the works of the series Vertical Volume, Daily Distance, Gawa, Shaping Air – A Breath of Mobility and Vertical Space, we look for the meaning of invisible air, breath, ki, svi, the etymology of sunyata, wonsang 원상, and the meaning of emptiness of Tao and Buddhism. 아우구스티누스의 『질서론』(De ordine)은 카펠라의 저작에 앞서 7자유교과를 체계적으로 다룬 최초의 작품이다. 아우구스티누스는 이 저작에서 3학(trivium)과 4과(quadrivium)의 기본 형태를 제시하고 7자유교과의 의미와 정당성을 철학과 기독교적 가치로 입증하는 데 천착한다. 그에게 있어 7자유교과는 총체적 지식, 즉 우주적 질서에 도달하기 위한 방법임과 동시에 우주적 질서(ordo universitatis)의 일부분이다. 아우구스티누스는 보편적 우주의 질서에 도달하기 위해서는 자유교과가 반드시 가르침의 올바른 순서(ordo eruditionis)에 의해 확장해야만 한다고 말한다. 그는 7자유교과를 언어 분과와 수학분과로 나누는데, 이렇게 나눌 수 있는 근거도 필연적 발달 단계에 따른 것이다. 또한 그는 7자유교과가 이성적 활동에 (...) 최적화된 교과로 구성되었기 때문에 개별 교과는 이성(ratio)의 활동 여부에 따라 우선순위를 갖는다고 강조한다. 아우구스티누스의 7자유교과는 철학과 기독교적 가치를 강조한다는 점에서 로마의 학자들과 구분되며, 자유교과를 표준화하려고 노력한다는 점에서 그리스 학자들과 구분된다. 또한 자유교과의 위상을 신적 질서의 일부분으로 상정한다는 점에서 이전 기독교 학자들과도 구분된다. 아우구스티누스의 7자유교과는 단순히 로마의 자유교과를 기독교적으로 변용한 것이 아니라, 전문화된 로마의 자유교과 체제에 신적 질서와 그리스의 철학적 정당화를 종합하여 독특한 자유교과 체제를 구성한 것이다. 중세 학자들은 카펠라의 문학적인 내용을 적극 수용하여 7자유교과를 발전시켰지만, 자유교과의 존재 이유를 밝혀주는 아우구스티누스가 없었다면 800년 동안 7자유교과에 천착하는 일은 없었을 것이다. 진리란 통상 객관적 사태에 일치하는 사고나 진술을 뜻한다. 하지만 이러한 인식 중심의 협소한 진리 개념으로 포괄되지 않는 진리의 잉여적 의미들이 있다. 예술적 진리가 대표적이다. 문제는 진리의 잉여적 의미들이 너무 느슨한 개념으로 머물러 있다는 점이다. 본고는 하이데거에 의거하여 예술적 진리 개념을 엄격하게 재정립하고자 시도한다. 이를 위해 우선 표상주의적 진리일치설을 논박하고 일치의 의미를 존재자의 자기동일적 확증으로 되새긴다. 확증론의 가능근거는 존재자의 발견이 진술 진리에 우선한다는 개시진리론이다. 이에 따르면, 진리란 존재자가 그 자체에서 스스로를 드러냄이다. 이때 ‘그 자체에서’가 객관성을 뜻할 경우 진리는 객관적 일치가 된다. (...) 하지만 존재자의 본질 유형에 따라 존재자가 ‘그 자체에서’ 존재하는 방식이 달라지므로 진리의 양식도 다원적이 된다. 결과적으로 예술작품의 진리는 세계 개방, 대지와의 투쟁, 미의 표출로 특징지어진다. 이러한 결과는 샤피로가 제기한 고흐의 구두 논쟁에 새로운 대안을 제시한다. 예술작품의 진리가 객관적 일치가 아닌 한, 그 감상과 해석의 올바름의 기준도 실증적 사실관계에 달려있지 않다. 따라서 구두주인이 누구인가는 감상과 해석에 무관하다. 비엔날레는 전 세계적으로 양적 성장을 해 왔으며 각 국가 간의 경쟁적 개최로 인한 피로감이 누적되어 왔다. 이미 많은 비엔날레가 존재하고 사회적, 미학적 가치가 결여된 보여주기 식의 행사가 범람함에도 정치적인 목적으로 또는 개최지의 홍보와 경제적 이익이라는 환상을 쫓아 새로운 비엔날레들이 지속적으로 생겨나고 있다. 이러한 현상은 비엔날레가 더 이상 예술로 소통하고 예술의 가치를 통해서 인류의 발전을 꾀하는 축제의 장이 아니라 필요에 따라 개최되는 행사가 되었음을 입증하는 것이다. 이러한 현실은 비엔날레의 역할을 재검토하고 예술적 담론의 중요성을 강조하는 비판적 시각을 요청한다. 본 논문은 이 부분을 (...) 주목하고 비엔날레의 문제점을 분석하여 우리가 지향해야할 비엔날레를 생각해보고자 했다. 비엔날레는 동시대의 역사적 시간성을 갖고 있으며 한편으로 미술 전시시스템이 되고 있다. 동시대 미술 전시 시스템으로 비중이 높아진 비엔날레에 어떻게 정치적 외교적 역학관계가 스며들고 있는지 어떻게 이데올로기적 국가장치로 작용하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 비엔날레의 역사적 배경에서부터 내포되어 있었던 문제점들을 되짚어보고 문화적 발전이나 예술적 담론이 부재된 관객동원과 흥행에 집중하는 전시행사에서 벗어나 비엔날레의 순기능을 강조하고 미학적 가치의 회복의 중요성을 고찰하였다. 花潭徐敬德은 16세기의 處士型학자의 대표적인 인물이다. 그는 어려서부터 자연에서 사색하며 관찰을 즐겼다. 그는 인간 본성에 대한 깊은 신뢰를 바탕으로 진리에 대해 주체적으로 탐구하였다. 그는 정주학뿐만 아니라 북송의 소옹과 장재의 철학도 깊이 연구하여 자신만의 학문세계를 구축하려고 하였다. 그 결과 氣哲學에 대한 이론을 정립하였으며, 조선 성리학사에서 理氣論의 논의를 심화시키는 계기를 마련하였다. 또한 산림에 은거하며 현실에 좌우되지 않고 好學하는 정신은 진리를 탐구하는 전통을 이루는데 한몫을 담당하였다.BR 花潭은 『周易』을 중시하였다. 그가 復卦에서 復齋라는 호를 취한 것만 보아도 이러한 사실을 알 수 있으며, 저술에서도 『周易』과 관련된 내용을 (...) 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 그는 『周易』을 상수역학적 입장으로도 해석하였지만, 도덕적 수양과 실천, 그리고 정치적 이상을 중시하는 의리학적인 시각으로도 이해하였다. 花潭은 『周易』에서도 특히 復卦와 艮卦를 중요시하였다.BR 그는 天道의 원리를 復卦와 연결시켜 「冬至吟」과 「復其見天地之心說」을 통해 설명하였다. 모든 만물은 시작도 끝도 없는 영원한 움직임을 끊임없이 해나가고 있다. 이것은 ‘生生不息’하는 마음이며, 천지의 마음이다. 화담은 사람이 復의 이치를 알면 道는 멀지 않다고 여겨 復의 이치를 인간의 행위나 처세에 중요한 지침으로 생각하였다.BR 또한 그는 人道로서 艮卦의 ‘止’를 강조한다. 화담은 艮卦를 도덕적 수양과 실천의 원리로 삼았다. 그의 저술 중「送沈敎授序」에는 이러한 마음이 잘 나타나있다. 그침의 의미는 인간이나 자연현상에서 볼 수 있는 가장 보편적인 특성이다. 그칠만한 때에 그치고 떠나야 할 때 떠나야 하는데, 이때 ‘止’는 ‘時中’을 의미한다. 사람은 학문을 통해 ‘止’의 이치를 깨달아야 하고 그것이 학문을 하는 목적이라고 花潭은 말한다.BR 花潭은 人道와 天道를 ‘時中之道’로 연결하고, 우주가 늘 일정한 법칙을 계속하는 復의 이치, 즉 天道를 깨닫고‘ 止’의 이치대로 人道를 실천해야 함을 강조하였다. 그는 이러한 이치를 그의 처세에서 중요하게 여기고 실천하였다. 그는 자신이 살던 상황에서 출사보다는 은거가 ‘時中’이라고 판단하고, ‘止’의 이치대로 그침의 삶을 선택하였다. 따라서 여러 번의 천거에도 출사하여 벼슬에 오르기를 거부하고 학문에 전념하였다. 출사하여 세상의 영욕에 휩쓸리기 보다는 은거하여 우주의 법칙에 순응하는 그침의 철학을 선택한 것이다. 그가 이러한 삶을 선택한 데에는 『周易』이 적지 않은 영향을 준 것으로 판단된다. 그는 『周易』에서 얻은 조화와 절제로서 자족하며 안빈낙도하는 인생관과 처세관으로 고고하고 청백한 삶을 살았다. 가다머에게 독서는 내면에 이르는 과정이며 이해와 해석의 기술 문제가 아니라 자기이해의 문제이다. 이해와 해석의 궁극적 목적은 자기이해이다. 독서에서 이해-해석-적용의 해석학적 경험과 실천이 ‘최종적’인 것이 아니듯이 자기이해도 ‘미완결된 과정의 연속’이다. 이와 같은 의미에서 독서는 자기이해를 위한 하나의 통로이며 타자이해-세계이해의 토대이기도 하다. 가다머의 해석학적 관점에서 현재의 교양독서교육은 자기형성으로서의 교양개념과 가다머의 자기이해로서의 독서개념에 입각해 본래의 목적성을 회복해야 한다. 교양 독서교육은 자기형성과 자기이해에 반하는 ‘관리되는 독서’를 지향하며 ‘권장도서 중심 독서에서 자유독서로’, ‘지식과 학습을 위한 독서에서 탐구를 위한 독서로’, ‘독백적 독서에서 공동의 언어를 창조하는 대화와 토론의 (...) 독서’로 교육의 무게 중심을 옮겨야 한다. 가다머의 해석학적 사유에서 열린 독서, 비판적 독서, 문제제기식 독서, 깊이 읽기와 같은 교양독서교육의 이론적 전거와 방향을 찾을 수 있다. 예술 제도론은 관계적 속성에 의해 예술을 정의하는 시도이다. 그러나 이런 시도가 잘못이라는 주장이 있다. 이 주장은 관계적 정의가 예술의 본질을 밝히지 못한다는 것이다. 이 주장은 크게 두 가지 측면에서 관계적 정의의 문제점을 제시한다. 우선 관계적 정의는 기껏해야 예술에 대한 외연을 밝혀줄 뿐이며, 그것의 내포를 구체적으로 밝히지 못한다는 것이다. 다음으로 관계적 정의는 가족 유사성 이론이 의뢰하고 있는 유사성의 패턴들을 설명하지 못한다는 것이다. 그러나 예술에 대한 관계적 정의가 잘못되었다는 지적이 오히려 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서 필자는 관계적 정의가 잘못이라고 지적하는 네일(Alex Neil)과 리들리(Aaron (...) Ridley)에게 어떤 문제가 있는지 살펴보려고 한다. 나아가 관계적 정의는 유사성에 호소하는 견해 보다 더 유망하다는 점을 제안하려고 한다.BR 본 논문의 1절에서는 관계적 속성에 의해 예술을 정의하는 시도가 등장하는 배경에 대해 간략히 살펴볼 것이다. 2절에서는 네일과 리들리가 지적하는 관계적 정의의 문제점에 대해 알아 볼 것이다. 그리고 그들의 지적에 오히려 문제가 있다는 점을 논증한다. 3절에서는 유사성 이론 중 하나인 클러스터 설명을 살펴보고, 그것이 어떤 문제를 가지고 있는지 살펴볼 것이다. 그래서 2절에서 논의한 네일과 리들리의 비판에 어떤 오류가 있는지 좀 더 상세하게 검토할 것이다. 그리하여 관계적 정의가 유사성 이론보다 더 유망하다는 것을 보여줄 것이다. 교양교육은 전인적인 인간의 육성을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 교양교육은 지식 습득과 감성 증진을 위한 기본적인 전제조건이자 민주주의에 걸맞은 품성을 기르는 것을 목표로 하며, 엘리트가 아니라 대중을 대상으로 한다. 예술교육은 교양교육의 목표를 여타의 다른 종류의 교육보다 더 잘 도달할 수 있는데, 이를 우리는 실러와 헤겔의 예술교육 개념으로 부터 배울 수 있다.BR 실러는 예술교육이 인간에게 전문적인 지식을 제공하지는 않지만, 인간의 능력 일반을 길러준다고 주장한다. 예술향유를 통해 우리는 유희충동의 상태에 빠지게 되는데, 이 속에서 우리는 감각충동과 형식충동의 균형 상태를 경험하게 된다. 우리는 예술작품이 제공하는 (...) 일정한 내용을 수용한다. 하지만 예술작품의 향유로 인한 유희 속에서 우리는 이러한 내용으로부터 스스로 자유롭게 되는 것을 경험하게 된다.BR 헤겔은 예술교육의 중요성을 인정한다는 점에서 실러에 동의하지만, 실러와 반대로 예술교육을 단순히 형식적인 의미에서만 규정하지 않는다. 실러는 예술 향유가 감성과 이성의 상호작용을 일으킨다는 점에 주목한다. 이를 통해 예술 향유가 전인적인 인간 육성에 기여하고, 인간을 “인류의 대표”로 교육시킨다. 이는 예술이 무엇을 표현하든지 간에 그 형식 자체가 이러한 감성과 이성의 균형을 표현하기 때문이다. 이러한 실러의 예술교육에 대한 생각에는 예술이 표현하는 내용에 대한 구체적인 반성이 빠져 있다.BR 헤겔은 한편으로는 예술교육이라는 형식 자체가 가지는 긍정적 의미를 받아들이면서도 이를 추상적, 형식적이라고 비판하면서, 다른 한편으로 예술이 제공하는 내용 및 그와 연계되어 있는 예술의 역사성을 함께 고려해야 한다고 제안한다. 헤겔은 ‘대중을 위한 예술작품’ 개념을 통해 예술향유가 예술연구와 동반되어야 한다고 주장한다. 박물관 건립 논쟁에서 헤겔은 향유와 연구가 박물관의 목적이라는 입장을 대변한다. 먼저 예술교육은 전문적인 부분에 매몰되어 있는 인간을 해방시킨다. 인간은 전문화된 현대 사회에서 특정한 기능을 담당하기 위해 자신의 전체적인 능력보다는 특수한 능력만을 발휘하게 된다. 예술은 특수한 능력만이 아니라 인간의 전체적 능력을 활성화시킨다. 두 번째로 예술은 인간에게 자신이 속한 사회의 공동체적 자기이해를 제공한다. 이러한 이해를 통해 인간은 개별자로서의 자신의 편협함에서 벗어나 사회적인 교류에 나서게 된다. 세 번째로 예술은 인간을 세계 시민으로 교육시킨다. 예술교육이 주는 이런 효과는 예술교육이야말로 교양교육이 추구하는 목적을 가장 잘 도달할 수 있다는 점을 보여준다. 본 연구의 목적은 쇼펜하우어의 예술철학과 후설의 현상학을 중심으로 철학에서 무관심성의 의의를 규명하는 것이다. 일상적 태도와 다른 ‘천재’와 ‘방관자’적 태도는 두 철학자에게 각자의 문제의식을 전개하는 데 중요한 계기이다. 맹목적 의지로 말미암아 인간의 삶이 근본적으로 고통이라고 생각한 쇼펜하우어에게 무관심성은 천재가 지닌 관조 능력의 전제이며, 자연과학적 실증주의로 인한 의미와 인간성의 위기를 경험한 후설에게 무관심성은 의식의 지향성을 온전히 기술하고 해명하는 과제와 관련된 방관자적 태도에서 결정적인 방법론적 의미를 가지기 때문이다. 따라서 18세기 이후 예술의 자율성이라는 문제와 관련해서 무관심성이 예술의 영역에서 많이 논의되는 것과 대비해서, 철학에서는 무관심성이 (...) 현실의 문제를 성찰하는 데 필요한 반성적 태도와 깊은 관련이 있다는 점이 드러난다. 본 논문은 칸딘스키의 추상표현주의와 추상예술론에 함의된 니체의 철학을 고찰함으로써 칸딘스키 추상미술에 담긴 존재론적 측면을 논증하는 내용을 담고 있다. 칸딘스키는 추상미술의 선구자이자 추상표현주의를 통해 전통미술에 대한 해체와 전복을 시도한다. 이와 동시에 예술과 삶에 대한 정신적 전환의 깨우침을 준다. 이와 같은 칸딘스키의 창조적 시도는 내적 필연성을 통해 가능한데 그 배후에는 니체의 위버멘쉬가 자리하고 있다. 칸딘스키는 그의 저서에서 니체의 가치의 전도, 힘에의 의지, 위버멘쉬를 직·간접적으로 드러낸다. 예술에 대한 니체의 정의는 전통적 예술개념의 해체와 확장, 파괴와 창조에 있고 이는 삶의 법칙과도 연관한다. 칸딘스키의 예술론에 담긴 (...) 위버멘쉬의 형상은 추상표현주의를 통해 현현하고 이는 현대미술의 확장에 지대한 영향을 끼친다.
