Education, anthropocentrism, and interspecies sustainability: confronting institutional anxieties in omnicidal times.Helena Pedersen - 2021 - Ethics and Education 16 (2):164-177.
Deborah Britzman’s remarkable question, ‘What holds education back?’, appears more urgent than ever in a world of accelerating environmental crises, climate change, and what has been described as omnicide – the annihilation of everything. What, then, holds education back from initiating radical change under these urgent conditions? This paper introduces the notion of ‘institutional anxiety’ as a consolidating force and explores how it may condition possibilities for resistance. Bringing examples from ethnographic fieldwork and experiences of course development in conversation with (...)

A Comparison of Affective Responses Between Time Efficient and Traditional Resistance Training.Vidar Andersen, Marius Steiro Fimland, Vegard Moe Iversen, Helene Pedersen, Kristin Balberg, Maria Gåsvær, Katarina Rise, Tom Erik Jorung Solstad, Nicolay Stien & Atle Hole Saeterbakken - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The aim of the study was to compare the acute effects of traditional resistance training and superset training on training duration, training volume and different perceptive measures. Twenty-nine resistance-trained participants performed a whole-body workout traditionally and as supersets of exercises targeting different muscle groups, in a randomized-crossover design. Each session was separated by 4–7 days, and consisted of eight exercises and three sets to failure. Training duration and number of repetitions lifted were recorded during the sessions. Rate of perceived exertion (...)

Heidegger and Korsgaard on Death and Freedom: The Implications for Posthumanism.Hans Pedersen - 2016 - Human Studies 39 (2):269-287.
Prominent advocates of posthumanism such as Nick Bostrom and Ray Kurzweil make the case that a drastic increase in the human lifespan would be intrinsically good. This question of the value of an extended lifespan has perhaps become more pressing as medical and scientific advances are seemingly bringing us closer and closer to being able to extend our lives in the way posthumanists envision. In this paper I intend to use Martin Heidegger’s work on death and freedom to develop a (...)

Competitive Research Grants and Their Impact on Career Performance.Carter Bloch, Ebbe Krogh Graversen & Heidi Skovgaard Pedersen - 2014 - Minerva 52 (1):77-96.
The role of competitive funds as a source of funding for academic research has increased in many countries. For the individual researcher, the receipt of a grant can influence both scientific production and career paths. This paper focuses on the importance of the receipt of a research grant for researchers’ academic career paths utilizing a mixed methods approach that combines econometric analysis with in-depth qualitative interviews. The analysis has novel elements both in terms of its subject (impact of funding grants (...)

Horizons of Authenticity in Phenomenology, Existentialism, and Moral Psychology.Megan Altman & Hans Pedersen (eds.) - 2014 - Dordrecht: springer.
This volume centers on the exploration of the ways in which the canonical texts and thinkers of the phenomenological and existential tradition can be utilized to address contemporary, concrete philosophical issues. In particular, the included essays address the key facets of the work of Charles Guignon, and as such, honor and extend his thought and approach to philosophy. To this end, the four main sections of the volume deal with the question of authenticity, id est what it means to be (...)

Beyond Castration and Culling: Should We Use Non-surgical, Pharmacological Methods to Control the Sexual Behavior and Reproduction of Animals?Clare Palmer, Hanne Gervi Pedersen & Peter Sandøe - 2018 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 31 (2):197-218.
This paper explores ethical issues raised by the application of non-surgical, pharmaceutical fertility control to manage reproductive behaviors in domesticated and wild animal species. We focus on methods that interfere with the effects of GnRH, making animals infertile and significantly suppressing sexual behavior in both sexes. The paper is anchored by considering ethical issues raised by four diverse cases: the use of pharmaceutical fertility control in male slaughter pigs, domesticated stallions and mares, male companion dogs and female white-tailed deer. Ethical (...)

Agency, Freedom, and Responsibility in the Early Heidegger.Hans Pedersen - 2020 - Lanham, Maryland: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
This book employs Heidegger’s work of the 1920s and early 1930s to develop distinctively Heideggerian accounts of agency, freedom, and responsibility, making the case that Heidegger’s thought provides a compelling alternative to the mainstream philosophical accounts of these concepts.

Schoenfeld, Nicolay Stien & Vidar Andersen - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The aim of this study was to compare the acute effects of performing a lower body resistance training program in one long or two shorter sessions in 1 day on training volume and affective measures. Employing a randomized-crossover design, 23 resistance-trained women performed two training days consisting of one long or two short sessions separated by 3.5–5 h. Each training day was separated by 4-6 days and consisted of three sets to failure for six exercises. Training volume were recorded during (...)

Metamorphoses of the Zoo: Animal Encounter After Noah.Helena Pedersen, Natalie Dian, Matthew Chrulew, Jennifer Wlech, Ralph Acampora, Nicole Mazur, Koen Margodt, Lisa Kemmerer, Bernard Rollin, Randy Malamud, Chilla Bulbeck, Leesa Fawcett, Traci Warkentin, David Lulka, Gay Bradshaw & Debra Durham (eds.) - 2010 - Lexington Books.
Metamorphoses of the Zoo marshals a unique compendium of critical interventions that envision novel modes of authentic encounter that cultivate humanity's biophilic tendencies without abusing or degrading other animals. These take the form of radical restructurings of what were formerly zoos or map out entirely new, post-zoo sites or experiences. The result is a volume that contributes to moral progress on the inter-species front and eco-psychological health for a humankind whose habitats are now mostly citified or urbanizing.

Undercover Education: Mice, Mimesis, and Parasites in the Teaching Machine.Helena Pedersen - 2011 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 31 (4):365-386.
What happens to education when the potential it helps realizing in the individual works against the formal purposes of the curriculum? What happens when education becomes a vehicle for its own subversion? As a subject-forming state apparatus working on ideological speciesism, formal education is engaged in both human and animal stratification in service of the capitalist knowledge economy. This seemingly stable condition is however insecured by the animal rights activist as undercover learner and—worker, who enters education and research laboratories under (...)
