    Is it possible to be both modern and tragic? Kierkegaard’s modern Antigone, the figure he creates as an exemplar of the modern tragic, is generally taken to be an endorsement of the tragic as an aesthetic ideal, but this overlooks the cautionary elements in Kierkegaard’s essay, “The Tragic,” in Either/Or.
