In this paper, we discuss some rather puzzling facts concerning the semantics of Warlpiri expressions of cardinality, ie the Warlpiri counterparts of English expressions like one, two, many, how many. The morphosyntactic evidence, discussed in Section 1, suggests that the corresponding expressions in Warlpiri are nominal, just like the.E. Bach E. Jelinek, A. Kratzer & B. H. In this note, we will look at some data that bear on the further question or more specific form of the question: How is quantification expressed in a polysynthetic language like Haisla? First, the claim that Mohawk does not have quantificational NPs requires some defense. In fact, Mohawk does have sentences that are near-equiv-alents of sentences with quantificational NPs in English.(1) gives examples in which the word akweku appears with universal force:(1) a. 9. 1.1. Lexical Categories Warlpiri has just two major lexical categories, nouns (N) and verbs (V). Morphologically, the distinction between these two categories is clear-cut. 11. Symmetry and symmetrical predicates.Barbara H. Partee - unknown
“Symmetrical predicates” have distinctive linguistic properties in many languages. But the concept of “symmetry” merits closer examination. Consider the surprising claim by the psychologist Amos Tversky (1977) that the concept ‘similar’, a standard example of a symmetrical predicate, is in fact not symmetrical. Tversky’s evidence includes the fact that experimental subjects generally rate (1a) as holding to a higher degree than (1b). (1) a. North Korea is similar to Red China. b. Information structure, perspectival structure, diathesis alternation, and the Russian Genitive of Negation.Barbara H. Partee - unknown
The Russian Genitive of Negation construction (Gen Neg) involves case alternation between Genitive and the two structural cases, Nominative and Accusative.1 The factors governing the alternation have been a matter of debate for many decades, and there is a huge literature. Here we focus on one central issue and its theoretical ramifications. The theoretical issue is the following. The same truth-conditional content can often be structured in more than one way; we believe that there is a distinction between choices in (...)

In list-method directed forgetting, reexposure to forgotten List 1 items has been shown to reduce directed forgetting. proposed that reexposure to a few List 1 items only during a direct test of memory reinstates the entire List 1 episode. In the present experiments, part-list reexposure in the context of indirect as well as direct memory tests reduced directed forgetting. Directed forgetting was reduced when 50% or more of the items were reexposed, and was intact when only 25% were reexposed. Furthermore, (...)
