The word yoginī is an ambivalent term, generally defined as a female yogin. For the purposes of the University of Hawai′i′s Center for South Asian Studies’ Symposium on the Ineffable in Religion and Ritual, I envisioned the ambivalence of the yoginī as characterized by semantic ineffability. This ineffability is seen in the divergence of definitions and descriptions of the yoginī in text and ethnography. The tantras portray her as flying, blood thirsty, and the object of tantric sex rites; she is (...) rarely portrayed as a yoga practitioner. Human yoginīs in India, by in contrast, often identify themselves as sannyāsinī (renunciate), practice some form of yoga, and are often celibate. To address the question of why textual and human yoginīs bear little in common, I render a polythetic definition of the yoginī by first looking at the many modes of definition and classification used to render meaning of the concepts that are integral to the formation of the yoginī. I then problematize the categorical construction of the yoginī and the disjunction between textual references to the yoginī in tantras of the Vidyāpīṭha (“Wisdom Mantra Corpus” or “Seat of Wisdom”), the Śaiva and Śākta Purāṇas, and ethnographic accounts of embodied yoginīs. These three sources, which emerge from various sectarian, historical, and social milieus offer interrelated yet distinct descriptions of the yoginī and as such provide a broad base of signification upon which to render a polythetic definition. Goddess traditions have much to contribute to reflections on the feminine in Imago Dei. Christian theologians and scholars have found goddess traditions in Hinduism as a source of enrichment for Christian theology. Using the Yogini Tantra, a seventeenth-century Tāntric text from India, I argue that the role of Kālï in the Tāntric Trinity and the conceptualization of Kālï-ness as explicated in Hindu Tantra helps us reconsider the role of the feminine in the Christian conception of the trinitarian Godhead and (...) Kālï-ness offers the feminist scholar of theology a way of doing “thealogy.” Reflecting on the pneumatological dimension of the Tāntric trinitarian godhead and the role of Kālï as pneuma manifesting within and outside of the Godhead helps us reflect on the theological understandings of the Christian trinitarian godhead. Indian Philosophy is a term that refers to schools of philosophical thought that originated in the Indian subcontinent. The Yoga School, which was founded by Patanjali, was closely allied with Samkhya, and accepts its epistemology and metaphysics it was introduced by Patañjali in the 2nd century BC. However, since its alliance with the Samkhya, it tried to develop a specific philosophy of its own, which would be in harmony with the Samkhya Philosophy. Though the popular understanding of Yoga equates it with just the asanas, there are eight steps prescribed for its practice, which emphasize internal and external cleansing, self - discipline physical fitness, and meditation, which result in alertness and mental strength. Yoga as a term used for a system of abstract meditation or mental abstraction. Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy with a high level of commitment is called a yogi or yogini. Virtually everyone can see physical benefits from yoga, and its practice can also give psychological benefits, such as stress reduction and a sense of well- being, and spiritual benefits, such as a feeling of connectedness with God or Spirit, or a feeling of transcendence. Mental stress is an important part of our life. It is the biggest challenge to live a life without stress and to continue with the peace of mind.
