L'action n'est pas dans le temps de la même manière qu'y est le mouvement, essentiellement destiné à atteindre un terme. Il y a une différence entre réaliser une fin qui requiert un certain temps pour être produite et accomplir (...) une action qui a elle-même pour fin, et qui se déploie dans un certain laps de temps. Mais cela ne revient pas à dire que l'action n'est dans le temps que par accident : l'action se donne comme étant mesurée par le temps, bien que ce ne soit pas là sa nature propre. According to a few interpreters, with Aristotle, action is not in time by accident but by essence is it timeless too. Such an opinion is here criticized starting from an analysis of the concept of « being in time », in Phys., IV, 12. Action does not rest in time in the same way as movement may, intended as it is in reaching some kind of end. There's a difference between achieving an end that calls forth some time to be produced and carrying out an action having its own self as end and unfolding itself within some lapse of time. But that does not necessarily entails that action should be in time just by accident : action is given as a data being measured by time though it may not be thus its nature as such. The first book of NE is organised on the model of investigating definitions described in the second Book of the Posterior Analytics, although, of course, with some adaptation due to the subject matter. It first establishes if the object exists and looks for the meaning of the terms used in common language to indicate it, next considers some necessary qualities of the object and then concludes with a definition of the object. We find there a dialectical syllogism of definition, and (...) not the procedure in three steps described in NE VII 1, sometimes called 'the method of ethics'. In fact, the method described in NE VII 1 does not apply to the first book of the NE. Its relevance for the NE has been somehow exaggerated. (shrink)

There are fields of research on NE which still need attention: the edition of the text the style and rhetorical and logical instruments employed by Aristotle in setting out his position. After indicating the situation of the research on the text of NE, I describe some rhetorical devices used by Aristotle in his work: the presence of a preamble, clues about how the argument will be developed, a tendency to introduce new arguments in an inconspicuous way and the articulation of (...) general definitions through more specific analyses. At a deeper level NE seems to be organised on the model of investigating definitions described in the second Book of the Postenor Analytics, and not according the so-called' dialectical method'. In conclusion I argue that NE is not an early or a confused work, as some scholars maintain, but rather a skilful construction, the fruit of a mature intelligence. (shrink)

Ce pouvoir de domination est exprimé par l’expression eph’hêmin, et c’est Aristote qui l’introduit pour la première fois dans le débat sur la responsabilité morale. Les chapitres où il discute le concept d’ eph’hêmin sont clairement de nature dialectique, et son analyse se situe très probablement à l’intérieur d’un débat académique (...) sur ces thèmes, dont on trouve des traces dans les Lois. Les disciples de Platon pouvaient trouver des difficultés à comprendre les thèses de Platon sur le rapport entre action et caractère, et Aristote propose une solution originale, fondée sur sa théorie des quatre causes. Contre Platon, il refuse de rejeter la responsabilité des actions et du caractère mauvais sur la cité et les éducateurs, et place l’origine du caractère dans les actions et les choix de l’individu. Avec ce choix, Aristote élargit le problème de la responsabilité humaine de la question traditionnelle de savoir si les méchants sont responsables de leurs mauvaises actions au problème général de la responsabilité de toutes les actions, bonnes ou mauvaises. Against the recent attempts by Irwin and Furley to subsume the final cause in the efficient cause, I try to read the notion of final causality as the result of a deconstruction made by Aristotle of the "divine cause" of the Timaeus. The final cause indicates a special dependency relationship in which a single event is essentially connected only to one of its consequences, and accidentally to all the others.

O objetivo do artigo é analisar a primeira parte do Livro V da Ética Nicomaqueia, dedicado a discutir a justiça, para mostrar que o método ali empregado não é dialético. Muitos estudiosos em anos recentes atribuíram a Ética Nicomaqueia como um todo o método descrito no Livro VII 1, cujo objetivo parece ser aquele de salvar as mais importantes opiniões sobre o assunto. Contrariamente a esta posição, pretendemos encontrar procedimentos característicos das investigações científicas tal como descritos nos Segundos Analíticos, II (...) 1-3 e 8-10, que, com respeito ao objeto da investigação, iniciam por responder à questão ei estin e prosseguem em busca da definição de sua essência através de passos sucessivos, um dos quais é a indicação de uma definição nominal. Neste modo de proceder, faz-se bastante uso dos endoxa, mas o argumento não é dialético. (shrink)

Kenny: in antiquity up to Aspasius or to Alexander of Aphrodisias the EE was considered the most important version of Aristotle’s ethical discourse; the idea that the common books belonged to the one or to the other treatise; the opposition between the theory of happiness of EN I and X and that of EE II and VIII.

El punto de partida de Alejandro es el capítulo 9 del De interpretatione, texto que indica de una manera bastante clara que Aristóteles visualizó las consecuencias, absurdas en su opinión, del determinismo. We present here the first translation into a modern language of the anonymous commentary on the second book of the Nicomachean Ethics. It is an evidence of the style of exegetical work that was being done in the Peripatetic schools during the 2nd–3rd century AD, and a testimony to a particular version of 2nd century Aristotelianism. Even if the comment is not continuous, one gets the impression of listening to a good lecturer illustrating Aristotle’s text. He paraphrases it at times, (...) makes comparisons with other passages of the corpus, illustrates the structure and the logic of the discourse, and shows the difference between Aristotle’s positions and those of other schools. In the most theoretically interesting parts of the commentary the anonymous discusses aporiai, and opposes Aristotle’s ethical theories to other schools, especially to the Stoics. (shrink)

L’article présente une brève histoire de l’interprétation évolutionniste des traités d’Aristote à partir de la tendance évolutionniste de Jaeger. Il se concentre surtout, en premier lieu, sur la naissance et le développement des interprétations dialectiques des traités aristotéliciens à partir des années soixante du XX e siècle et, en second lieu, sur les critiques adressées à cette tendance par les interprètes contemporains du début du XXI e siècle. La section finale propose une approche alternative : selon cette interprétation, Aristote ne (...) renonce pas, y compris dans ses Éthiques, à la recherche de la définition. Dans l’ Éthique à Nicomaque, il parvient à définir les principaux concepts et phénomènes moraux en suivant la méthode permettant de fonder les définitions qui est décrite dans les Seconds Analytiques, livre II. Cela n’exclut pas que la méthode « dialectique » ou « endoxale » ait un certain rôle dans l’ Éthique à Nicomaque. (shrink)
