Zygmunt Zawirski: His Life and Work: With Selected Writings on Time, Logic and the Methodology of Science.Irena Szumilewicz & Zygmunt Zawirski - 1994 - Springer Verlag.
Zygmunt Zawirski (1882-1948), an eminent and original Polish philosopher, belonged to the Lwow-Warsaw School (LWS) which left an indelible trace in logic, semiotics and philosophy of science. LWS was founded in 1895 by K. Twardowski, a disciple of Brentano, in the spirit of clarity, realism and analytic philosophy. LWS was more than 25 years older than the Vienna Circle (VC). This belies, inter alia, the not infrequently repeated statement that LWS was one of the many centres initiated by (...)

  17. Nauka i metafizyka (II).Zygmunt Zawirski - 1996 - Filozofia Nauki 1.
The text is the second part of an unpublished manuscript, written in 1920 (for the first one - cf. „Filozofia Nauki”, 1995, no 3). In this part, the author considers some important examples of classical metaphysics. He comes to the conclusion that the most essential question in metaphysics is the problem of Absolute Being. This is, of course, a metaempirical - and consequently extrascientific - problem.

The text is the first part of an unpublished manuscript, written in 1920. According to the author, on the one hand, it is impossible to create metaphysics based on experience, and giving absolutely safe interpretation of the reality. But, on the other hand, experiential metaphysics, being satisfied with only probable results, is not of exactly scientific character. Nevertheless, we should work at constructing a „metaphysics”, integrating results of particular sciences into one system, free of contradiction, but being conscious of provisionality (...)

Zygmunt Zawirski: His Life and Work: With Selected Writings on Time, Logic and the Methodology of Science.Irena Szumilewicz-Lachman, Robert S. Cohen & Bettina Bergo (eds.) - 1994 - Dordrecht, Netherland: Springer.
Among the extraordinary Polish philosophers of the past one hundred years, Zygmunt Zawirski deserves to be given particular attention for his fusion of analytic and historical scholarship. Strikingly versatile, and con tributing original work in all his fields of competence, Zawirski thought through issues in the philosophical aspects of relativity theory, on the claims of intuitionalistic foundations of mathematics, on the nature and usefulness of many-value Logics, and on the calculus of probability, on the axiomatic method in (...)

Zygmunt Zawirski, a member of the Lwow-Warsaw Philosophical School, in 1927-28 published an extensive paper (in three parts) devoted to the critical examination of the eternal return hypothesis - the idea that the history of the universe is fundamentally a cyclic process. After presenting the development of this idea throughout the ages Zawirski discusses arguments on its behalf coming mainly from the second law of thermodynamics and from the Poincaré recurrence theorem. Zawirski's criticism is confronted with (...)

The Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic in the 1920s and 1930s in Poland.Roman Murawski - 2014 - Basel: Imprint: Birkhäuser.
The aim of this book is to present and analyze philosophical conceptions concerning mathematics and logic as formulated by Polish logicians, mathematicians and philosophers in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a remarkable period in the history of Polish science, in particular in the history of Polish logic and mathematics. Therefore, it is justified to ask whether and to what extent the development of logic and mathematics was accompanied by a philosophical reflection. We try to answer those questions by analyzing (...)

    Leading Metaphilosophical Values of the Lvov-Warsaw School.Tadeusz Szubka - 2022 - Filozofia Nauki 30 (1):47-52.
The article explores the concept of scientific philosophy as understood by members of the Lvov-Warsaw School. The author argues that according to Twardowski and his students, philosophy should be done as an exact discipline which ought to be pursued in critical and collaborative spirit. Selected views on scientific philosophy are analyzed, including ideas of Ajdukiewicz, Zawirski, and Dąmbska. It is claimed that though the conception of scientific philosophy is beset with crucial and fundamental ambiguities, it was far more important (...)

Towards scientific metaphysics.Krzysztof Śleziński - 2019 - Berlin: Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften.
The book presents results from research conducted by Zygmunt Zawirski on the theory of knowledge, quantum mechanics, logic, ontology and metaphysics. 0The works undertaken in the field of logic, methodology and philosophy of science, and in particular the philosophy of nature and natural science testify to a solid preparation for the fundamental task of developing contemporary scientific philosophy. The emerging mathematical natural science did not have those possibilities which emerged in the 20th Century and which Zygmunt (...) (1882-1948) used. In the development of scientific metaphysics, he took into account both the achievements of modern logic, mathematics and physics. Zawirski builds scientific metaphysics by referring to empiricism, broadly understood experience. Modern metaphysics should meet high standards of precision and uniqueness, which is why Zawirski attempts to apply the axiomatic method to both the analysis of the theory of physics and the scientific metaphysics. Conversations with Zygmunt Bauman.Zygmunt Bauman & Keith Tester - 2013 - Wiley.
Zygmunt Bauman is one of the leading figures in contemporary social thought. His work ranges across issues of ethics, culture and politics. It never forgets that social thought ought to help men and women make sense of their lives and aspire towards something different. His books and essays always focus on the here and now: violence and moral indifference, globalization, consumerism, politics and individualization. They cast a sharp eye on the panaceas of ‘there is no alternative'; the embrace of (...)
